Some Pushing for Openly Gay Man as Navy Sec'y

They haven’t necessarily been asked, but some Democrats and retired military officials are telling who they want in as secretary of the Navy: openly gay William White.

Ret. General Hugh Shelton, who acted as chairman of the Joint Chiefs from 1997 until 2001, says White would be "phenomenal," while Democratic Representative Jerrold Nadler described him as "very capable."

Though he himself doesn’t have any military experience, Nadler insists his tenure as chief operating officer of the USS Intrepid Museum laid the foundation for his experience: "Mr. Nadler said Mr. White has become a friend of the military, and particularly the service members and their families, both through the Intrepid and through Fisher Houses, which offer a place to stay so families can be close to military members who are receiving medical care." If appointed, White would be the first openly gay official to serve in the role.

Now, some of you may be asking, "Wait, doesn’t the military prohibit openly gay servicemen and women?" Well, yes, they do, and that exclusionary law could cause a headache should White be nominated. Elaine Donnelly, who runs the Center for Military Readiness, offered her reservations on the White possibility yesterday, "It’s a matter of judgment, and I think that would be very poor judgment on the part of the commander in chief. It would be very demoralizing to the troops."

Nadler, meanwhile, dismissed Donnelly’s criticism as "nonsense," and said, "He’s not in the foxhole, he’s not on the ship," and therefore won’t "demoralize" anything. More than that, the position’s of the civilian variety, which means White’s presence wouldn’t contradict "Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell."

The Obama team, of course, isn’t telling where they stand on White’s occupational future.

The “don’t ask don’t tell” rule is stupid—Colin Powell is correct—this needs to reevaluated ASAP and dumped.

Okay I give up. I am no where near as well informed as I thought I was. In the last 30 days from this site I have learned that there are still “Whites Only” country clubs. eHarmony openly discriminates/excludes Gays from joining their dating site. And now the military SILL openly discriminates against Gays. I hadn’t realized this was still an issue. Hmmm…..I keep defending our country in conversations by saying how much we have progressed, when clearly we haven’t.

I keep asking myself why do we need to now who’s gay and who’s not?

Gosh, I so-o-o agree. If he is qualified and wants the job, but is denied without lawful reason, then it should be considered an issue. But not until then. Guess it will be a while before we get there, though. Just as my philosophy professors would point out: thesis, antithesis, then synthesis.

The Secretary of Navy is not a political position - it is a national security position. The person most qualified, in the opinion of the President, should get the nod.

As Barry Goldwater said- “You don’t need to be straight to be in the military, you just need to shoot straight!” - I completely agree, the idea that someone would be less able to do their job because of their sexual orientation is insanity. Who I screw is my business and who you screw is yours. My husband (a 14 year NAVY vet and currently and active ARMY soldier) has plenty of gay female personnel working along side him, they are not discriminated against, the gay men however are heavily tormented and put up with a lot of flack just to be able to serve our country and fight for the equality they are not even able to take advantage of. It is a shame. Maybe having more openly gay men in positions of high standing will help to usher in the changes we so desperately need to see.

My husband is in the Army and I have been a civilian employee working with the Army for many, many years. We have known quite a few officers & enlisted soldiers who are gay. I can even think of one General who is practicing the “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy in their own personal life. It unevenly enforced all around. I’m not close to any of these particular people but if I am aware of their sexual preference then it is no secret at all. We need to kick this useless policy to the curb. If gay individuals want to sign up to suffer through boot camp, have their personal lives disrupted by multiple trips to Iraq, never see their families, work long hours, get shot at by enemies & yelled at by superior officers, then let ‘em. We can use all the qualified volunteers we can get right now.

Unfortunately, the military is still considered a “good ol’ boys” club, and until and when this changes there will always be those who have the ignorant opinion that gays in the military are dangerous to the country - because they might distract from action on the front line??? WHAT? Who amongst us would even think about sex during battle? Damn ignorant fools, anyway! I wish we had a list of all the GLBT who have died for this country, I doubt it would even matter, there are so many blinded people through their awful ignorance and prejudices. The whole damn “don’t ask don’t tell” was thought up by Bill Clinton, as I understand it. Unfortunately, he never served in the military so he is the last one to form some kind of basis, or rule, for GLBT people in the services. At least he made some effort to create a different kind of atmosphere for glbt’s. It would just make “Rummy” cringe and freak, maybe even give him a heart attack, if there were actually a gay or lesbian in charge of one branch of the Services.
