From Bruce Springsteen to Diana Krall, Julia Reed Mixes It Up for Valentine's Day

Julia Reed

In honor of Valentine’s Day, our first playlist will be songs related to love. As there are very few songs that don’t seem to be related to love in all its many guises, this first list will be more than twice as long as usual, though it is completely arbitrary and by no means exhaustive. To make things slightly easier (for me), I’ve categorized them according to some of love’s phases.

Falling in love

"At Last," Etta James, At Last! (Remastered)
This song has been co-opted by Jaguar (in a really clever use of the song) and Beyoncé sang it (beautifully) for the Obamas’ first dance, the ultimate romantic "sigh of relief" song for everyone who has finally found love (and not just a new president).

"I Believe I’m in Love With You," Bonnie Raitt, Road Tested
This totally infectious song reminds you of how much rocking, good fun falling in love can be. The band is having such a good time onstage they are clearly in love with each other.

"I Thought I Was a Child," Jackson Browne, For Everyman
Bonnie does a great version of this, too. Either way, it’s about that moment when an encounter can change your whole perception of yourself. Browne’s early lyrics are poetry.

"Everyday," Buddy Holly, Buddy Holly: Greatest Hits
Genius song by the first genius of rock and roll. You can feel it getting stronger.

"True Companion," Marc Cohn
He sang this at Brooke Shields’s wedding, and hey, she’s still married!

"Maybe I’m Amazed," Paul McCartney, McCartney (Remastered)
The best. And by a guy who really, really was in love with his wife (No. 1, that is).

Still Happy

"Ain’t Nobody," Chaka Khan, Epiphany, the Best of Chaka Khan, Volume 1
There was a period in the 1980s when people ended up dancing, wildly, to this song at every party I had (even in stuffy old Washington and often with things like colanders on their heads). If anyone can sing ecstasy, it’s Chaka.

"Here Comes My Girl," Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, Damn the Torpedos
Who wouldn’t want to be this girl? Petty has never cut a song that isn’t rock and roll at its sexy, sexy best.

"Something in the Way She Moves," James Taylor, James Taylor: Greatest Hits
Someone told me the other day that George Harrison’s song by this same name was not about Patti Boyd at all, but about smoking pot, and there are probably almost as many songs about pot as love by some folks’ translation. Whatever — I love Harrison’s song for the guitar riffs alone, but Taylor’s song is so spare and touching and heartfelt. It is from his very first album "James Taylor and the Flying Machine," which made me a Taylor convert for life.

"Sparkle and Shine," Steve Earle, Washington Square
A lovely love song from a guy who ain’t generally all that happy.

Sticking it out — or trying

"Forever My Love," James Taylor and Carly Simon, Carly Simon, Hotcakes
A tad bittersweet since it was written when they were in love and married, and I think she was pregnant with their second child. Still, they meant it in the moment, as we all do.

"Let’s Stay Together," Al Green, Let’s Stay Together

"One Step Up," Bruce Springsteen, Tunnel of Love
Captures the difficulties of doing the above (staying together). Springsteen’s marriage was breaking up when he wrote this album and you can tell.

"The Long Run," Eagles, The Long Run

Dear Chrome Toe,

Thanks so much for your playlist in return! I am glad you liked mine. I am hoping to get the "real estate" to do a playlist of the week every week on the site. I loved your songs, by the way. I almost put "Till I Gain Control Again" on mine, too. Love Emmy Lou’s version. You should also check out the one by Crystal Gayle, of all people – it is fab.

As for the fashion show, you’re going to in September, you will have a blast. No matter what the economy, they are always fun and energizing. There is great buzz in the tents (or wherever this one will be), what with all the fashion editors with their notebooks in the front rows, the girls, the music – which always sets the tone. It’s a scene and it’s fun to see at least once in your life. And if you look great in your jeans, by all means wear them, just make sure to have cool jacket or coat!

Thanks for the comments!

real estate for a playlist would be awesome! you could have playlists by different people as well. some of the other wow founders and some of the wow participants. i am always looking for new music. unlike my hubby who only listens to top forty from the 50’s through the 80’s lol.

and thanks for the fashion week tip. I’m excited!

victoria - sad story for you about that song by Emmy. When I was a teenager I lived a couple years in a tiny north idaho town. there was one local radio station and it was across the street from my house. there was a gorgeou DJ about ten years older than I was working there. every single night i would call him and request that song. there wasn’t a request line or anything but i lived across the street and he was dating one of my best friends! every single night he’d play it for me. this went on for a couple months then one morning i woke up to the news that the young man had killed himself. Turns out he was just a sad beautiful boy. that song is forever on my list and I remember him every time I hear it.

Chrome Toe — whewww, (sound of me blowing out a long breath) that is soooo eeerily beautiful. Fits the song. Thank you for sharing it with me. Emmy lives up the street from me. Think I should get your story to her. Of course, Rodney Crowell would probably be touched by it, too…

Julia,
I was so excited when I saw you responded to the above message! I am a big, big fan of yours and I’ve been looking for some way to contact you for some time.
I am a recent college graduate, with a major in English and Art History. I am also a lifelong Southerner. At the risk of being a cliche fan, I really do believe we have a lot in common! I am passionate about the culture of New Orleans, food in all its delectable variations, life’s (mis)adventures, and art in all forms. I plan on beginning my masters degree in the fall, but until then I am job hunting. Ultimately, someday I would love to write about lifestyle and culture the way you do, and I am wondering if you have any advice for someone embarking into such  a bleak job market? I know you are a busy woman, but if you have any wisdom for me I would really appreciate it.
Just in case you want some background on me, here is my blog, where I have written about your work and my other personal interests: www.vivrejoie.blogspot.com.Also, my e-mail is whitstem@gmail.com if you want to contact me that way. I would be ever-grateful!
