Sports Bras and Breasts: Not Always Best Friends

New findings from a breast biomechanics research team suggests that the bra you’re wearing could be damaging your breasts.

Researchers from the Department of Sport and Exercise Science at the University of Portsmouth tested about 50 bra designs on hundreds of women over the past three years and found that a woman’s breasts could be damaged and fragile ligaments permanently stretched by wearing the wrong bra.

The researchers found that women may be buying the wrong size because they are embarrassed by their bust and/or ignorant to what the perfect bra is really supposed to feel like.

"There’s a social stigma about certain sizes; many women don’t want to be seen as too small or too big and buy a bra that doesn’t fit well in order to be what they consider to be a normal size," said Dr. Joanna Scurr, the study’s lead researcher and biomechanics expert. "Many other women are unaware that they are wearing a badly fitting bra or unknowingly wear the wrong bra size because they are routinely being sold ill-fitting bras."

Dr. Scurr also found that during exercise breasts can move up to 8.26 inches, up and down, in and out, and side to side — and, contrary to popular belief, most sports bras are designed to limit just vertical movement.

Researchers told the BBC news that many women wear sports bras to exercise, thinking they provide more support than traditional bras. However, the reality is just the opposite, according to scientist Wendy Hedger. The researchers also warned women against wearing crop-top sports bras.

"In sports bras, for example, many women won’t buy a bra that resembles their everyday bra and does up at the back — they think if it can’t be pulled over their heads like a crop top, then it’s not a real sports bra," said Hedger. "But this is not true and many sports bras do up at the back in the same way as a traditional bra and do a very good job of supporting women."

Interesting; I did not know this. I have wondered, though, when I see this happening to joggers in my n’hood. My philosophy: If it’s not comfortable, it’s not good. I did get a professional fitter this year; she told me that about 95% of the women she fits are wearing the wrong size.

I don’t know anything about bras, but I’ve read that high heels are extremely damaging to women’s feet.

I was glad to read the comment here. Been telling my daughter this for 2 years so now perhaps she will listen to the experts. Diana is right, it has to be comfortable and a professional fitter with expertise in the field is a great asset. My other daughter found this out as she always had pain in one side, after an expert fit she found out she was wearing the wrong cup size , her pain is gone.

As a breast cancer survivor bras become a big issue. Everyone touts that underwire bras help get the girls ‘up’ and takes pounds off of your look. My advice - don’t wear them. A major part of a woman’s lymph system is under arms and around her breasts. It’s function is to move lymph fluid in and out of the breast to destroy oxidants. Underwire bras cut off the circulation and lower your breasts defenses to potential problems. When diagnosed, my doctors told me to immediately stop wearing them.

Boy can I attest to this. I was born with the gene which makes big boobies. And I passed it on to my daughters. Both of my daughters were so huge for their body size, the doctors recommended breast reductions and they went through the surgeries. I can remember my youngest daughter wearing 3 bras at a time to try to maintain stability, even though I bought her very supportive bras. When she had surgery, she was just age 17. The surgeon took out 3 pounds of breast matter from one breast and 2.5 pounds from the other. It is so important that women wear the correct bra. And, those bras must support the weight of the breast. I remember going to Kohl’s years ago and trying on at least 25 to 30 bras before finding the exact bra that I needed. It was a Bali bra and now I always buy the same bra style, just in different colors. These are not cheap, but I just wait until Kohl’s has the 55% off sale each year and stock up. Do not just buy a bra because it is on sale and very cheap. Your bra should wrap around you like a lover, hold you up like a girdle holds you in, and give you room to get it all in. Do not let it all hang out! Peace and Goodwill….doll

JUST TODAY I WENT TO A LOCAL STORE, WHICH ACTUALLY FITS YOU FOR A BRA, SINCE THE BRA I WAS WEARING SEEMED TO BE TOO TIGHT ACROSS THE BACK AND WAS CAUSING SOME DISCOMFORT. THE SALESGIRL CHECKED OUT THE FIT AND RECOMMENDED A DIFFERENT STYLE BRA WHICH FELT BETTER. ONLY RECENTLY I HAVE BEEN WEARING A BRA WITH UNDERWIRES. IT SEEMS THAT THESE ARE MORE SUPPORTIVE.OF COURSE FOR SOME REASON I HAVE GONE FROM A “B” CUP TO A “C” OR “D” CUP. I AM A SIZE 10(WHICH I JUST LEARNED IS THE SIZE MOST MEN PREFER WOMEN TO BE).SO GIRLS IF YOU ARE EXERCISING IT IS VERY WISE TO WEAR THE PROPER BRA.
