Stylists on Palin's $150K Makeover: It's a Good Thing

Sarah Palin has taken a lot of heat — from Democrats, especially — for spending $150,000 in Republican National Committee money to look good. Some say this has caused her to have an image problem.

But many stylists say that was money well spent.

Politico.com, which first broke the Palin shopping story, interviewed professional stylists and image consultants who said Palin’s makeover was necessary to boost her profile from one of a virtually unknown Alaska governor to branding her as the potential next vice president of the United States.

"She is dressing appropriately for the job she is going after,” said Lauren Rothman, a Washington stylist and the principal in the fashion consulting firm Styleauteur.

Betsy Fisher, the owner of the eponymous clothing store in Washington’s Dupont Circle, says Palin and her handlers managed to straddle the line between hockey mom who hunted her own moose meat and uber-fashionista. “She does not look like she is wearing particularly expensive clothes,” Fisher said. “She looks like you could be her, too.”

Some also say it’s not a new phenomenon – candidates spending party money, or their own cash, to look good on the campaign trail.

“We’ve worked with candidates before who have money to spend — some of it was their own, and some of it was from the party,” said Los Angeles-based image consultant Patsy Cisneros, a part-owner of Political Icon, which works with candidates running for office. “It was put in under so many different ways. You would be surprised what money gets spent.”

Hmm…I just wonder how much ‘this’ cost? http://obamawho.files.wordpress.com/2008/02/obama-dress.jpg

OMGIAMGOING NUTS … I’m sure it cost hardly anything, and whatever it cost, he didn’t charge it to the campaign. This attempt at adding more of your racist input is really beneath this website. There is a line.

I can judge you by your posts when that’s all I have to go by. You represent yourself in here.

Who are we to judge? We weren’t put on this earth to Judge others…Judging others just means you have something of yourself to judge

If someone makes racist remarks I judge that they are racist. I’m not talking about Judging that they’re going to Hell… I’m talking about judging that a person has a racist agenda when they post racist remarks. If I came in here making racist remarks I would expect that people would judge that I am a racist.

Well of course STYLISTS think it was money well spent… if they’d spent it in a pub BARTENDERS would think it was money well spent! It’s the hypocrisy of the amount of money dressing and putting make-up on the shill who is going around calling Obama “elitist” and talking about “real Americans”.

Looks like Palin needs someone to tell her how to think, how to dress, and how to dress her family. I guess picking someone from a podunk town in Alaska maybe wasn’t the best choice for the repbs. How low will she drag Mccain, will she be the reason he loses the election. I sure hope so.

Tear E. well said.! There are women he could have chosen that are intelligent and he would’nt have to sit with them during interviews or worry about what they are saying. He picked her to appeal to the right wing conservatives. - the low-information voters.

This is just part of the transformation of politics into entertainment. Of course actors are costumed to appear to be someone they are not. It is just unusual—I think this is a first—to spend campaign funds to costume a politician to appear as someone she is not. There is probably a good opportunity for an enterprising journalist to find photos of Palin before the makeover to see if the money was well spent. I think they could have pulled it off for ten thousand dollars, but then they would have had to shop smarter. Which is the point. Do we want a leader in such grave economic times who does not shop smarter?

I don’t really care what she spends on her clothes - it’s not my money, but if I were a Republican I would be concerned that they were using money that I might have donated to the campaign to “dress” her.

OK - Now we should begin to take another look at what is really going on in these last few days before elections… 1) The incumbents\candidates are so afraid of losing not only the elections but their position of POWER! Doesn’t this all boil down to power, really? We have seen many on this site react in exactly the way the ads were intended. That is the scary part for me. 2) People’s minds are being manipulated much the same way as KR masterminded this [practice] during the 2000, 2004 elections. And, what about all the conversations I/we have had about voting without allowing fear to be a major influence. (?) If we were to take out some of the language, or images which influence us, or scare us, or prevent us from just voting with simple logic - 3) Wouldn’t it make more sense and, enable us more to be free from all the negativity? The negative ads ARE working! They are being used to mess up our thinking. They are being used to influence our thinking and our votes. It is not even so much the ads themselves, rather the subliminal messages behind them. Liza you certainly sparked a big reaction with such a tiny cartoon! It is so remarkable how such a small thing can become so huge, and reactionary. [I still want to know though, which reality am I supposed to check in?] I love that both you and Jane Wagner are able to use your artistry to make such a huge point. I love also that people actually stretch a bit to comprehend, analyze and respond to your work. Where was wowOwow in 1999?? I just love this site. I am glad more and more people are finding it, as I did - but… the down side is; it will change so dramatically over time and will never be the small, cozy, comfy, provocative, endearing, and sometimes radical site it is now. Only time will tell what happens from here. Well, time and the human factor of course. Repost from “Liza Donelly” cartoon. Thanks one last time. Obviously yours and Jane’s work has provoked me in a really good way. Well, it is good for me - anyway. (I can’t say for anyone else).

This wardrobe update sounds like the RNC insulted Palin’s choice of her own wardrobe. —— As if to say ‘If you want to solicit the elite vote, then dress the part! …i.e. get out of the discount, second-hand store, average American shopping center, and go where the rich shop.’
