Joan Ganz Cooney Reflects on the Passing of a Princess

I was at our then-house in East Hampton. My stepdaughter called to tell us to turn the television set on and I then watched until it was announced that she was dead. As sad as I felt for that beautiful, befuddled girl, I knew the royal family and their retainers were, at least in their hearts, popping champagne corks. And I didn’t blame them.

And I didn’t blame them.” What a mean thing to say! Might you have been part of the silent entourage, perhaps, wishing she would just ‘go away’? The majority of the royal retainers had no opinion they wished to share with anyone outside their job site, even if that, and later, when everyone could see the affection with which Diana was held by the public at large, those who felt anything other than admiration of what she had done for the forgotten, lonely, and in distress, would not have expressed it.
