Superstar Chefs Go to Vancouver! Whistler Adds Super Gondola!

Mary Wells

Jean-Georges Vongerichten has joined Daniel Boulud in Vancouver. Jean-Georges, who has a three-Michelin-star restaurant in New York, has made a deal with the luxe new Shangri-La Hotel to run a fabulous restaurant, The Market, scheduled to open in January. It will be his début in Canada. His friend, Daniel Boulud, who also has multi-star restaurants in New York, is going to run the new Lumière and DB Bistro.

Vancouver is a restaurant town! Stars like Jean-Georges and Daniel Boulud will get a warm — no, a hot welcome!

Whistler and Blackcomb in British Columbia will open a new Peak 2 Peak gondola in December. An engineering feat, it will connect them at 6,069 feet by way of a 2.73-mile, 11-minute ride — and will give passengers views at the highest distance in the world above a valley floor!

The best way to get tickets to the premier 2010 Olympic events is to buy bundled ticket packages that the organizers are now putting together.

Sales start October 3. Suggestion: Buy now. If you change your mind about going you’ll have no trouble selling tickets later.

The dishes from the Beijing Olympics were cleaned, packed and shipped directly to Vancouver. The preparation is On ! The official caterer for the USOC had beautifully prepared and delicious food ready for athletes, sponsors and families. Looking forward to Vancouver.

Gypsy— I was thinking the other places I’d like to relocate besides France is Whistler….or Salt Spring Island. Isolated places…very different, but would be fun for awhile. So appreciate your pieces on the region. Will need to head up to Vancouver soon. You make it sound even better than before. Esp with the Farmer’s Market pix you posted before….I am a real upscale Farmer’s Market freak. Wonder if there is a book about the great ones around the world. There should be. If haven’t seen Bourdain’s French Laundry vid it is fun too: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G-5Sol8K-3o September issue of Elle Decor had a terrific piece on Napa Valley. Thanks! Bundled ticket packages will check it out. So definitely looking forward to the 2010 events. Should be fantastic.

as Mike Moore’s deal in ‘Sicko’—-the Canadian is ‘whupping’ His health coverage—-Moore asks if he would like to exchange health cards—- the Canadian’s reply? ‘No way’.—-but Canada has changes, since i drove my 8-kids, ex, thru the Yukon—-in mid December—-unwise—-it was 45 below, 20 knot winds, and i a fool, thinking gas stations, etc. would be as here—-at least every 50 miles—-nope—-my uhaual was low on gas, my ex in shock—-then we turn a bend—-an open fishing lodge—-normally closed, kept open for Montreal scientists doing core drills in the ice-fields—-saved—-we were using chains—-French Canadians were running the place—-said, ‘dump your chains—-after 30 below, tires stick to the road.’ i explained No American has such trust—-when a ‘long-hair’, even a Fed—-i had break hoses cut, ‘cotter-pins’ left out of my VW bus’ brake linkage, and worse—-any could have meant Death, as i lived in high mts.—-for me and many children—-doubt you’ll find that in Vancouver—-but hope ya like rain—-

I just returned from a glorious week in Whistler and man, you couldn’t find many nicer places to live. Although We were told the week before we got there it rained every day, WE didn’t have a cloud in the sky the entire week. What a beautiful place !! With all the outdoor activities you have NO EXCUSE not to be healthy. My advise… wait til after the Olympics, and bring plenty of money !

I thought this had something to do with James Abbott McNeill Whistler. But thank you for bringing me up to date, as you so often do. Maybe I’ve had too may Picso Sours tonight, but this topic is refreshing after so much depressing news. Thank you. And if you’re in Beijing, don’t miss the lovely lakeside villa of the amazing Soong Ching Ling, wife of Sun Yat-Sen. Very moving, the dramatic sweep of her life, the refinement of her environment.
