Sens. Susan Collins, Olympia Snowe Flex Muscle in DC

Never before have Maine Sens. Susan Collins and Olympia Snowe had so much street cred in Washington.

The lady senators were two of only three Republicans who voted for the stimulus bill in the Senatealong with Sen. Arlen Specter, R-PA. And now, The Washington Post reports, Snowe and Collins (who aren’t exactly great friends, but get along well enough to get things done) have put Washington on notice that they – and the tiny state of Maine, which they represent – are forces to be reckoned with. Since the Democrats don’t have the 60 seats needed to prevent any Republican filibuster, it’s moderates like these fine ladies who can hold the keys to the legislative castle. They can help make things happen, or they can hold things up — and, to the Obama administration, that makes them extremely important people.

But if Obama or Congress hope to lean on Collins to help with unfreezing the credit markets, they should think again.

Collins told Capitol News Service in Maine that despite talk of there possibly being a future stimulus bill, "Congress has already appropriated $750 billion for that purpose and I have seen very little results." She won’t consider shoveling more money until she knows exactly how the current appropriations will be used in the credit markets.

"I voted against the second release of the TARP funds because there was not the needed transparency and accountability in how the funds will be used," she said. "The Obama administration is going to have to do far better than the plan sketched out by [Treasury Secretary Timothy] Geithner that really wasn’t much of a plan at all."

Diamond, The bigger question is do any of them ever read any of the bills that they vote on?

Thanks SJ for the great article. That is what my research into this 800 billion dollar pork bill tells me it is going to be about. The vast majority of the bill will go for useless non-stimulus money wasting programs, and many of the real potental stimulus items will not kick in for several years in many cases. What type of business are you in?

Land Surveying and Land use planning……. These kinds of projects take years to become shovel ready . Six months to engineer, aquire property another 6 months to put out to bid and they 6-8 months to build. It also takes months to see final payment so banks would have to aid in lending money to the subs in the meantime. If you are already an approved contractor you may see some work down the road but the only people that benefit in the short run are government employees!

This is very telling. This story was written by Wowowow Staff and indicates in the very first sentence how these two, (insert favorite plural derogatory noun here), now have Street Cred! Apparently the only way to gain street cred in D.C. is to agree with the liberals. The next thing you know, they’ll be Mavericks! Come on Wow Staff, at least pretend to be objective. .

You completely miss the point, Anita. They have street cred because they are of great importance to both parties. They are currently in a position of power.

Perhaps you should read or re-read, as the case may be, the actual article.

It doesn’t matter all that much to me that these two Senators were female, and the bill may do their state more good that it will other areas of the country. I’m just glad the bill didn’t end up deadlocked. And I’m glad the Senate Republicans had the influence they had. It may not help everybody, and it won’t help anybody right away, but I’m pretty sure it’s a step in a positive direction for a lot of folks.

The only thing is does is give my laid off employees an extension on their benefits..they will need it as nothing will happen in my area for years! The tax credit was used up in the first 8 weeks, the COBRA health benefits are still to expensive and would make them make a choice between health and their house payment on their $1300.monthly benefit!

Just one question… what was meant by Snow and Collins aren’t great friends but get along well enough to get things done? Why was their friendship or lack of friendship even mentioned… because they’re women? I’ve never heard the issue of friendship brought up before with concern to Senators working together on something. And what about Spector, who is HE friends with?
