Suze Orman: Gay Couples Should Be Allowed Financial Benefits of Marriage (Video)

By The Staff at wowOwow.com

Suze Orman, who has been called a "one-woman financial advice powerhouse," took this Valentine’s Day weekend to champion gay marriage.

Saying marriage is a "privilege," Orman — who is gay — points out that married couples receive myriad financial benefits, and no one should be barred from taking advantage of that.

It is such a travesty that a few months ago Proposition 8 in California passed, Proposition 2 in Florida passed. What is that about, everybody? We are taking away a birthright, if you ask me, for people to get the most out of the money they have spent their lives working … every single one of us deserves to have the same financial benefits — whether we are gay or whether we are straight.

Orman’s fantastic show airs on CNBC on Saturday nights and on XM/Sirius radio, and always offers tons of tips for how to save and invest your money. She particularly encourages women to take control of their financial futures, something we definitely supporter.

Here’s Orman’s Valentine’s Day video:

gay couples should be allowed financial benefits of marriage”. all i can say to that is “no shit!”. i just don’t get peoples narrowness on this issue. Intellectually I know it’s a religious issue ultimately. and religion has no logic. but logically… My brain can’t wrap around why people are so freaking hung up on the whole gay marriage thing. It’s not like hetero marriages look ANYTHING in this era like they used to look when they were conceieved religiously. and it’s not like women ever got the best deal in the bargain. at least not until recently. when it’s evened out a bit. but in the day.. women were just bargaining chips and marriage was a business proposition. so what is it that makes people so self righteous on this issue?

All too true C T. And when I was living in a small town in Nevada the ones that really amazed me were the Mormon community. Here they are, a “religion” built on a strange form of marriage but they want to stop others from getting married. They would have stands at any communtiy function wanting to SAVE marriage, as if this would somehow get rid of it. Always wondered if they thought their spouses would run off with someone of the same sex if they were just given a government OK.

I was down at the other end of the state, Mesquite, about 80 miles north of Vegas. We started out in St. George, Utah, and were going the 30 miles south to Mesquite all of the time for something to do so when we bought a condo we bought there. Lived there 15 years then moved back to Houston. My kids are all here, well my son is in Brazil for 2 years, but mainly here. Mesquite was doing well when we left 5 years ago but not long after that time the economy hit there like everywhere, homes aren’t selling and the casinos (main industry) are shutting down. Were only 5 and 2 are closing.

For me it’s a matter do you want to live a live of inclusion or exclusion. Shame on those who don’t want the best for all of us so save your judgement for your own life.

Before this became an issue in the last few years with ammendments, etc., I just assumed 2 adults who happened to be gay could marry each other! I admit I never gave it any thought before, but was surprised to find out that gay people couldn’t get married. I suppose being a Libra, I am repulsed by anything that is unfair, but until I find out about it, I assume everyone else thinks this way too!

Good for Suze for speaking out! I have voiced my opinion on various threads on the subject of Gay rights and in almost every instance I am sure I have stuck my foot in my mouth. What I was trying to convey never came across in the manner in which I meant. However Suze and all the other celebrities that are Gay that choose to be upfront and honest about their sexuality, they should be applauded. Because so many in society believe that homosexuality is not the norm. Culturally there are ethnic groups that believe that homosexuality as opposed to heterosexually, is a perversion. It is why so many in California and elsewhere have a hard time supporting Gay rights. And as with any form of bigotry or discrimination, the number one manner of combating it is exposure. It’s easy to hate what you don’t know. You can be White and hold negative and divisive beliefs against Blacks. But once you get to know some on a personal…intimate level, your thought process and prejudices diminishes. The same is true for Gays and Lesbians. Society needs to see that they are everywhere and in every field of work. They live next door to you, sit beside you at work and stand beside you in stores. So as hard as it is for some celebrities to be true to who they are and come out of the closet, it’s people like Suze that illustrate to America they are normal, average men and women who want nothing more out of life than their straight Americans. The same rights and privileges.

I don’t necessarily believe in gay marriage myself, but I have nothing against gay couples and them having a civil union which should give them all the same rights as hetro couples. We all fall in love with whomever we feel comfortable with and if its someone of the same gender so what, that is your right to do so.

Marriage is between a man and a woman…Civil Unions are for the others! Just don’t call it marriage and most will accept… Financially marrriage and civil unions are a business partnership.

Who are we to tell our fellow citizens what they get to call their marriage?

We have idiotic tv shows like "Bachelor" where people act stupid on television for several weeks in hopes that some guy they barely know will marry them. We have weddings in Vegas where people get married by Elvis. The divorce rate was 50% last time I heard. If anyone is being disrespectful of marriage, it is hetrosexuals, so who are we to tell gay people they are not worthy of calling their unions "marriage"?

Personally, I think the government should get out of the ‘marriage’ biz altogether. We should all have civil unions, which are legally binding, and then if we choose, we can go to our churches, etc. and have marriage sacraments.  Then it would be up to the various churches to decide whether or not we can marry there. The divorce Catholics will still have to get married elsewhere, the gay couples will get married in progressive churches… etc.
