Tax Woes Derailed Kennedy's Senate Bid, Say Sources

By The Staff at wowOwow.com

We may have more information on why Caroline Kennedy dropped her bid for Hillary Clinton’s Senate seat. Though Kennedy’s official statement cited "personal reasons," The New York Times today reports that tax problems may have been the real reason:

Problems involving taxes and a household employee surfaced during the vetting of Caroline Kennedy and derailed her candidacy for the Senate, a person close to Gov. David A. Paterson said on Thursday, in an account at odds with Ms. Kennedy’s own description of her reasons for withdrawing.

Regardless, some are still insisting that Kennedy dropped out after it became clear that Paterson didn’t intend to pick her. Two Democratic sources — speaking anonymously, of course — claim Paterson’s now leaning toward upstate Representative Kirsten E. Gillibrand, who’s served two terms.

Kennedy’s team is keeping quiet on the reasons behind Caroline’s decision, but The New York Times intimates there’s something fishy afoot.

During the early afternoon Wednesday, [an] aide said, Ms. Kennedy became aware of what the aide referred to as a “personal situation” that could prevent her from fulfilling her duties as senator. The personal situation was not related to the seizure that her uncle, Sen. Edward M. Kennedy, suffered during an Inauguration luncheon on Tuesday, the aide said, declining to be more specific.

Another aide to Ms. Kennedy, while not denying there were issues that emerged during her vetting, said that there was nothing that surfaced that would disqualify her from the appointment, and that the Kennedy camp and the governor’s operation had been discussing how to publicly disclose the issues.

Whatever Kennedy’s reasoning, we have a feeling this story will continue to unfold in the days to come. Especially since Paterson’s aides are reportedly fuming over Kennedy’s sudden departure. Could this "tax" report simply be retribution?

I have to say, anybody that’s got enough (insert your favorite here) to hire domestic help and not pay their Social Security taxes… well, they’re just too stupid and/or arrogant to not be a state senator! Give her the job ☺

Hello, From reading the post over on the Inauguration forum(darn I did not know about the forum until the next day) Well the post you left in the end run…”Thank you so much Jeannot—she’s my saving grace. :-)”. Then Joan was writing the next day about her daughter DEB. So that’s why. But is DEB ,DeBúrca? Or both…

John G. The same could be said for the idiot they are vetting for the tippy top job with the new administration. This clown not only didn’t pay his taxes, he also has problems with who and what he claimed on his taxes. Funny, you’d think that people who are being considered for high ranking positions would know how to keep their noses clean! I seem to remember two ladies, Republican, who were being considered for positions in the Bush Administration who were rejected because they had the same problems as Caroline. Now, no one is checking this guy out — gee, “honest mistake: my a$$,

Good heavens, she said it was “personal.” Let’s respect that and leave it alone.

Yeah, really……NY is not short on talent…they’ll figure it out…It was, however, an interesting flurry of activity for a moment. We all take an occasional mistep on our paths….. We will wait and watch to see for how her path unfolds…..

I have long admired Ms. Kennedy from a distance and have always thought since she had - for the most part - stayed out of the limelight that she should be left alone. However, she chose to enter the public arena and by doing so made many aspects of her life open to discussion. Her public demeanor and inability to articulate her positions were very disappointing as I have always considered her to be both extremely intelligent and well educated. Both of which she may be but she certainly is not poised enough off the cuff to function well as an elected representative. It is also distressing to think that someone in her privileged position might have tax issues, although one would think we would all be used to that. Anyway, she has bowed out so that makes any further discussion moot. Now hopefully someone who has been toiling in the party for years but does not have the benefits of Ms. Kennedy’s name recognition, wealth and connections will be given a chance to further serve the party and the state of NY.

I just commented about this on another thread. My problem is now with Paterson. He dragged this thing out first claiming it kept reporters from questioning his fiscal plans. Then he said he told others he was trying to keep “the suspense going”. But yesterday, he (and his office) lied when they called the Caroline reports “a rumor”. It wasn’t. They did receive and were stunned by Caroline’s decision. If Paterson was going to not give her the seat, due to vetting problems, why all this wrestling to get a statement out that she was still interested???? If Paterson was trying to keep himself in the spotlight, I for one am not amused. I do not hold any of this against Caroline. But her handlers and the governor have a lot of explaining to do. And, to still have to hear that wealthy people in government positions have not been paying their Nanny Tax—is it they feel they are just above the law or just too stupid???? Maybe that should be the first question on these vetting forms.

Good post Brooklyn Gal…… I disagreed with some of it and I agreed with some of it…….First the part I disagreed with….. He dragged this thing out first claiming it kept reporters from questioning his fiscal plans. Then he said he told others he was trying to keep “the suspense going” The first thing that I heard him say about his was that he wasnt going to make a decision until Hillary Clinton got confirmed…… there was no seat available until that happened……. how would that have been dealt with if he offered the seat to someone and she didnt get confirmed?….. this answer wasnt good enough for the press…. they kept asking him every day…… so he came up with “humorous” answeres instead of rehashing his original answer And, to still have to hear that wealthy people in government positions have not been paying their Nanny Tax—is it they feel they are just above the law or just too stupid???? Maybe that should be the first question on these vetting forms. That is just way too true……If this is the real story…. why make it public? why not just fade away when you arent picked? I just dont get it. I do hope that Caroline gets an ambassadorship though, get her finances together then run for the senate in the future.
