Tax Woes Force Nancy Killefer From Obama Team

President Obama’s administration took another hit today after Nancy Killefer withdrew her bid to be the Chief Performance Officer amid revelations that she failed to pay back-taxes. Killefer brings the administration’s tax scandal tally up to three: Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner and Health and Human Service pick Tom Daschle have both had to admit misfilings over the past two weeks.

Though she did not release many details of her current woes, Killefer reportedly wrote a letter to the president explaining that she had "come to realize in the current environment that my personal tax issue of DC unemployment tax could be used to create exactly the kind of distraction and delay" of her confirmation. That "tax issue" involves unpaid unemployment taxes for former employees.

Had she been confirmed as CPO, a new position created by the president, Killefer would have helped organize the government and the White House’s efforts to stabilize the budget and economy. Now she may just go back to being a consultant at McKinsey & Co.

Obama had no comment on Killefer’s departure, despite the fact that a reporter asked him, point blank, why so many of his appointees had tax problems. We take it that’s not a matter the president wishes to address.

…why so many of his appointees had tax problems. What’s going on with this. Do the people in charge of vetting think tax evasion a non-issue?

I would like for them to vet everyone in the senate and see how many pass on the income tax issue. I am not accusing anyone of an ethics violation - I think that with complicated tax returns errors can be made. If they pay the taxes when it is pointed out- I don’t have a problem with that. I am sure the IRS takes care out right tax cheats - . There are people in prison who will vouch for that.

Do ya suppose that will work with the IRS if us civilians use that as an excuse….stop making excuses for these people who break the law…they knew what they were doing…why all of a sudden they pay up as soon as they are appointed for a position???? DUH!!!!!!!!!!!

And what about Palin’s tax woes—care to comment on those?

I never heard of any of her tax woes. Regardless, she’s not in office now, is she? Non-issue.

starry: I would like for them to vet everyone in the senate and see how many pass on the income tax issue. I think they’d all fail — Democrats and Republicans, alike. The place needs to be cleaned out. Barney Frank. Chris Dodd. Out. …complicated tax returns… What’s so complicated? It isn’t like these people do their own tax returns, they do have accountants. Bottom line: You hire legal domestic help, and you paid social security and other taxes for them. Even I know that, and I hire no one.

Obviously you have always had simple tax returns with earned income on a W-2. How nice for you. The tax code is complicated even for accountants. . It depends on the circumstances in each case. Even for domestic emloyees.

Or better, hire a cleaning service and sign a contract…then it’s THEIR problem to take care of taxes, insurance, disability etc.

I agree Starry. Maybe now is the time to check everyone’s closets in Washington to see what they’re hiding. I’ll bet these aren’t the only ones who have outstanding unpaid and unreported taxes. Easy for them to point fingers until their secrets are known. Perhaps everyone who wins a political seat in Washington should be thoroughly investigated before they’re allowed to hold office. Wonder how many would be forced to drop out?

Evidently, she didn’t have the money to pay off her back taxes when she found out she was obama’s nominee for this position….such as money bags Timothy Geithner and Tom Daschle….they should have warned her….imo

Libra: …such as money bags Timothy Geithner and Tom Daschle… Obama better start paying attention to what’s going on because we’re all getting a little jittery and nervous. I mean, how many tax crooks can one administration pass off?

Libra, I agree,….if liberals could only stay current with the issues. Everytime they are backed into a corner they pull out their “What about the Bush Administration” card….
