Teatime With Judith Martin and the Financial Times

Joni Evans
wOw’s own Judith Martin (aka Miss Manners) had tea with the Financial Times this weekend. In case you missed this interview with the one the FT calls "the mistress of etiquette"— here it is. Click here to read it.

I wonder if wowOwow would be kind enough to provide this article in its entirety without the necessity of having to register with the Financial Times.

We could use Ms. Martin to referee some of the impolite tirades that erupt in the WoW.com political discussions.

Ah, for good old manners. I miss civility, and I am always rather distressed when I am with younger people that obviously had no training as to how to eat properly, show consideration for others in the room, and some of the traditional ways we used to treat each other. And, I truly think that is why so much rudeness is displayed in our every day lives. Good etiquette was just one part of our growing up, both at home and in school. I guess now days that would be considered “elite”, whatever that means.

Diana…you mean you’re not supposed to wear filthy jeans down below your butt, blast rap music out of your car so loud that houses shake three blocks away, use cell phones in restaurants, etc.?

I miss it too. I can’t tell you - you already know, I’m sure - how frustrating it has been trying to raise kids to have manners and how to treat others when their peers are let loose to run around like animals. I get a boost, though, when an older relative or acquaintence takes the time to tell me how well-mannered my children are. I hope it sticks.

Yesterday, I had three very good looking and up and coming 30 yr olds just let a door slam in my face. Jerks!

I read this Sunday, in the newspaper. By the way, folks, the Sunday Financial Times is a real newspaper with facts and stuff (and great articles, like this interview with Ms. Manners)….

Dear Joni, how can I, a Wow myself but also an avid Wow reader and admirer, thank you enough for showing us the Judith Martin article. I urge everyone to carefully read it. You’ll get a delightful idea of what Judith Martin is like. This was such a brilliant and amusing interview and showed us “Miss Manners” at her best. I am endebted to Judith, the Financial Times and you, dear Joni, my boss of bosses. You should write more yourself for this website. Love and kisses, Liz Smith

Just read this: The late Molly Ivins, chammpion of women’s rights and enemy of the crooked and anti-feminest good-old-boy network, might have said this of Sara Palin after her acceptance speech: “Women voting for this ticket is just like chickens voting for Colonel Sanders!”
