Ted Kennedy Is a Lovely Human Being; I Am Praying for Him

I hope you read my story about the Chicago convention when, at a big luncheon, Ted Kennedy kept patting my tummy because I was wearing one of those bouncy full-skirted dresses in style at the time and he thought I was pregnant and he was patting the baby. That is one of those mistakes you make that you never forget. Ted may have forgotten it but my late husband Harding didn’t. We saw Ted frequently for a while at Mary Lasker’s apartment near the U.N. Mary was the wonder woman who got the government into trying to cure cancer and had a lot to do with the cherry trees in Washington and the group that planted Park Avenue into splendor.

Mary wanted to adopt me primarily to educate me about art as she couldn’t understand how I could be successful in the advertising business without being art smart. She adored Ted and she adored my husband and she assumed they would adore each other. But my husband saw Ted as a tummy patter and Ted saw my husband as someone best to avoid. Mary was determined to get Ted and my husband together into serious conversations about the cancer foundation and she figured I was in the way so she would push me into corners with any artist she was excited about at the time. “You know, Mary,” Ted said to her and to me and to my husband once as she was pulling me away. “If I didn’t value my life, I do know how to get a telephone number.”

Harding thought that was funny and became a fan. Later, after Ted had gone, she said to us, “You know, women are mad about him, they call him with invitations all the time. But I know him well and, believe me, he is a lovely human being and he is very careful, he knows he is trusted, he has so much to lose for us all.”

I remembered Mary when Ted had his trouble and I have always believed she was right about him. We need lovely human beings these days. I am praying for him.

Thanks to you, Mary, I also met Mary Lasker. It was at a lunch in your office with Dr. Robert Gallo … Mary Lasker was an early supporter of AIDS research and I remember her excitement with what Gallo had to say— I also remember that she said to me “how do you like Park Avenue…” You rescued me, ( I had no idea what she was talking about) with an easy reference to the tulips. (thanks) I have been thinking about Ted Kennedy all day. I was thinking about how the most irresponsible brother, ended up being the father figure for about 20 children -a more responsible role than most of us could rise to. Prayers are not a natural part of my vocabulary, but I am doing a pagan cheer on his behalf.

Ms. Wells how about doing something more than praying for these young girls Quoting Dr. Bernadine Healy from an article she wrote in U.S. News & World Report February 19, 2008 : “There’s an argument out there that oral sex is not sex….To some young people , oral sex preserves virginity – technically speaking – and allows for what is perceived as risk-free sexual intimacy. From a medical perspective, however, this is sex – and generally, as practiced, it’s unsafe. People seem clueless that sexually transmitted diseases such as herpes, gonorrhea, chlamydia, and human papillomavirus [and also syphilis] can take hold in parts of the oral cavity during sex with infected partners and that the oral contact can infect the genitals, too….Granted, the major risk for STDs comes with vaginal sex, but the relative ease and growing frequency of oral sex among those engaging in casual “hookups” is a virtual epidemic in the making. Providing our young people with graphic medical information and stern parental and medical guidance is long overdue. ” This information has not been provided to young people and should be provided immediately.

bean - you have posted all over the place. Me thinks it would be wise for you to consult a therapist about your obsession with teenage girls having oral sex. I noticed you have not once mentioned boys that must be participating. So my Psyc 101 makes me think the time you spend thinking about the girls in this subject is not quite normal.

p.s….i still remember back in the 1970’s when we native american people were trying to make things right for our people (against all odds…things are still NOT ‘right’), ted kennedy was always willing to put his influence where it would be heard on our issues…shining way woman

I really believe the Ted Kennedy holds the choice of his existence, not the medical world. I see what could be called miracles all the time, but it is always a choice of the reciever. My thoughts and energy are with him, his family and this country at this time. He has a lot of love at his disposal. Linda www.myspiritualwindows.info

I just can’t believe there are still people writing about the mistakes he made when he did so many good deeds. Can’t we ever forget ? We are all human and surely we may be accusing but forget to look in the mirror. I came to the USA in the fifties and I came from a Catholic country with a great socialize medicine program. I remember (perhaps it was in the sixties then) that young Kennedy was talking about socialized medicine and the need for it. All my friends started to tell me that this was not a socialistic country. They could not understand it. I think we need him now more than ever and lets not bury him yet, if you believe in prayer then pray for him the very least we can all do is wishing him a great recovery. I for myself believe in miracles and will pray for him but please lets leave the dirty linens behind us.

We know by now what the frequent posters are going to say, regardless of the specific topic. We know who’s conservative and who’s liberal, who’s “for” whom, who insults and who praises, who hopes for flattery or respect or sympathy. It’s gotten shrill here, with the multitude of topics providing fewer insights than rehashes of personality. It’s run by opportunistic founders, distant contributors and queen bee posters. None of which is necessarily a bad thing, and some posts make some others worthwhile. I’m sure this’ll shake down into organized, moderated topic boards eventually, so it feels less scattered. I hope Ted Kennedy has as long and robust a life as he wants. He’s done a lot of good. I don’t think he murdered Mary Jo.

As a disabled person, I thank my lucky stars that Ted Kennedy championed the American for Disabilities Act. It has allowed me to have a wonderful quality of life. In addition to wearing hearing aids, I needed to get a service dog. The service dog has been a great support.

oh my goodness Mark Rowe, I only hope GOD judges you as harshly as you seem to judge Ted Kennedy.  The difference is thats GODS job, not yours.
