wOw's Views on the News: Can Clinton, Obama or McCain Get Us Out of This $9.1 Trillion Hole?

By The Staff at wowOwow.com

There’s some bad news: the national debt is now $9.1 trillion. And then there’s … some worse news: the Republican AND Democratic presidential candidates — instead of plotting a way to get us out of the mess — appear poised to dig that hole deeper if they get the job, according to tax and budget experts interviewed by Larry Rohter and Michael Cooper for a report that appeared Sunday in The New York Times.

Are we damned if we do vote – for any of them? Whose plan has the most promise? Are the candidates ducking the issue? Will our children pay the price?

I am praying that McCain picks Mitt Romney as his running mate. Romney, who graduated magna cum laude from college, then earned a JD/MBA from Harvard, is a financial genius who truly understand the markets and capital. Romney was able to turn Massachusetts around from being in the hole to surplus. McCain is the next financially literate then Hillary, and last Obama. I cringe when I hear them lambasting corporations and threatening more taxes. Capital is free to go wherever in the world it chooses -and chasing businesses out of the US with higher taxes is cultural and financial suicide. What are they thinking??

You need to take a closer look at Mitt Romney’s “stellar” record on taxes in Massachusetts. http://thehill.com/leading-the-news/romneys-tax-record-gets-a-closer-loo… for more just Google Mitt Romney’s tax record.

This is a great issue. Nothing stands alone. There’s such intricacies. Try as we might, no single person can handle the world’s complexities anymore. Vision is helpful though, but sometimes I wonder if the next leader will be like someone immersed in oil (like quicksand) with his/her limbs pulled apart.

To get out of the $9.1 trillion hole: Cut out waste, severely cut the Pentagon budget, and put somebody’s mother in charge.

This is a great attempt to get at the issues that are driving our country. Agreed -we can not effect change in our economy with the current standards in place. We need a more refined model. No one person can change this immediately. Not one of these candidates has experience at the management/ executive level. With that said, we must look to the examples of how they have run their life and campaign. What have been the hallmarks for corporate appeal, how have the assets been allocated, who manages to attract the strongest positive labeling, who do the supporters/employees trust, does the label command respect in the broadest sence? Those are the questions I would ask before entrusting the budget to anyone.

I had read the NYT article yesterday, and it only confirmed what I alread knew: McCain doesn’t give a DAMN about working people, any more than did Bush/Bush/Reagan. His ideas for “balancing the budget” entail favoring large corporations and wealthy people - in other words, more of the same Republican crap. Obama’s and Clinton’s plans may not be perfect, but at least they give some indication that they are interested in doing something that benefits real people.

Ginger, I am so disgusted with the greed and avarice of large corporations, but unfortunately they employ thousands of Americans. It is almost as if we are stuck between a rock and a hard spot - if we put more of a pinch on them they just reduce their work force - then there are more Americans unemployed, if we don’t, then they run our government. When the democrats gained majorities in the last election I thought they would address corporate greed, but as it turns out, they are receiving more money from lobbyists than the republicans - which is a new twist. I think when the election gets down to two candidates, the repubs will start unleashing what they know about democrats taking money. It would not surprise me that this is the calm before the storm. Since my last post, I went to the pharmacy to pick up prescriptions for my son and myself. I knew the trip would be expensive, it is always expensive. The prescriptions cost the following: $415, $152, $147, $47 and $16. When I reviewed them at the pharmacy I discovered that some of them had been prescribed before and hadn’t worked, which I explained to the doctor in the dermatologist’s office. I only took one of the prescriptions, because I would rather use alternative med. My son and I used to be under the same prescription deductible, but now they have changed it and raised it to $500 each. Crazy. I don’t have to do this, so I am not going to.

Frances: re corporations: they may employ thousands of Americans but they out-source a ton more—we can’t forget that. My god, those prices for your prescriptions are horrendous. 500 bucks for a prescription is criminal.

Hey Frank, small businesses are corporations too. I know they outsource but they still employ hundreds of thousands. It will hurt the small guy too.

Stop the spendaholic politicians and their parasitic minions. In our high school we have a new and completely unnecessary multi-thousand dollar gizmo that looks like an ATM machine. Remember, when picking up a sick child you simply signed them out with paper and pen? Well, some Rube Goldberg affectionado figured that a bells and whistles kiosk would be much more entertaining, and easier for the bureaucracy. Step 1 Swipe your drivers license Step 2 Enter in your name, address and social security number Step 3 Aim the camera and press button to take a mug shot Step 4 Wait for printout to affix to your person. (The next version will require a DNA swab.) My husband pointed out to the receptionist that the nurses’ office was 20 feet away, and he could see the doorway - was this really necessary? Yes, it is for security. Later I asked him: “Did she mention the 6 inch hunting knife hanging on your belt?” Of course not - no security problem there. So today to pick up dear daughter, age 16, he told the nurse to just have her waiting in the main office to avoid the kiosk mug shot. But at the school entrance, new procedure, now he has to be buzzed in. “Did you bring a driver’s license, the voice asked. “No,” he lied. “Then you can’t come in.” “I’m here to pick up my daughter who is waiting in the office.” “Well, is there anyone here at the school who can identify you?” He hesitated: Did she really just ask me that ludicrous questions? He paused for dramatic effect. “Uhhhhhhhh………..my daughter!!!” “Ok, fine,” and she buzzed him in. And that’s why in our state they get $15,000 per child. People really wonder why we are in the mess we’re in?

More inefficiency and waste: Now the vice-principal has called most likely to chastise my husband for failure to provide his license. How can they be consumed with this minutia? We have 27 vice-principals for 4 high schools. That is all they do - not teach, not coach, just vice-principal stuff - all making close to an over $100,000 + benefits and pension. A recent article in the New York Times identified a new charter school that will be paying extraordinary teachers $125,000 a year, less than the principal, and no vice principals. It’s a new model of efficiency. We need more of this to carve away the ugly fat. Major liposuction needed on government.

bella, it sounds as if george w. bush is running that school. instead of spending down our federal debt with the surpluses handed him, he tripled the federal debt with moves like keeping the iraq war off the budget at $12 billion a month while vetoing state children’s health care as a budget buster at a total of $35 billion. now mccain wants to keep that $12 billion per month in place or expand it. both clinton and obama want to get rid of the $12 billion per month expenditure, or at least reduce it as much as possible and put it on budget, where there will be congressional oversight of the contractors and rebuilding effort. clinton is well aware of how the previous clinton performed the impossible and balanced the federal budget. due to w’s wastrel ways, we need another clinton to perform another miracle.
