wowOwow Salutes Our Friend, Tim Russert

Sadly, while sitting in the wowOwow offices on this summer Friday, we just heard the news flash that NBC News’ beloved Tim Russert died in his office today, June 12, 2008. He was 58.

Tim was a colleague to many of the wowOwow contributors, and it is with great sorrow that we announce his passing. The longtime host of NBC’s “Meet The Press,” he held court on the most successful Sunday morning news program of his time. He was also senior vice president and Washington bureau chief of NBC News.

Tim leaves behind his wife, Maureen Orth, a writer for Vanity Fair magazine; his son, Luke; and his beloved "Big Russ," the father who he regularly spoke of on air, and who he visited just last weekend. Our hearts go out to the entire Russert family in this hour.

The following is a memo sent to all of NBC Universal announcing the tragic news:

It is with incredible sadness that we share the heartbreaking news that Tim Russert passed away today, suddenly. We have lost a beloved member of our NBC Universal family and the news world has lost one of its finest. The enormity of this loss cannot be overstated. More than a journalist, Tim was a remarkable family man. Our thoughts and prayers are with his wife, Maureen; their son, Luke; and Tim’s entire extended family.

One of the more intelligent and understandable men on television will be greatly missed. I always enjoyed his commentaries and analysis of the event so the day.

Mr Russert always presented himself and his views with class, intelligence, and objectivity. He performed a public service to his viewing public with integrity and respect… No personal scandal, no seedy professional drama…an openly dedicated ( and exemplary) family man. The good ones always leave too soon. My thoughts and prayers go out to his loved ones

Tim Russert seemed to be such a wonderful man. Such a loss. I feel especially sad that this happened Fathers Day weekend. He always spoke of his father, his son. He will be missed by all.

I am heartbroken for his dad, wife and child - he just always struck me as a heck of a nice guy - I hate to admit it in here but I loved it when he was a guest on Don Imus; their conversations were wonderful to listen to - this is very sad

Tim has been part of my Sundays for years. His devotion to his family and faith were also a big part of his life—and yes Buffalo too. I saw how saddened he was when he gave tribute to Wm. Buckley. But, Buckley lived a full life. Tim was taken so young. I, like many others, will miss him.

Too sad. Too sudden. Too soon. Strong, smart, funny (I loved to see the twinkle in his eyes). Among the very best. Sincerest sympathies to his family and friends.

This is so terribly sad. I have enjoyed watching his news coverage and I don’t think I have missed a Meet the Press since he began hosting it. Most memorable was his white board with Florida scribbled on it the night of the 2000 elections. [I think that white board went to the Smithsonian.] But I am sorry for his wife, and his father Big Russ, and his son Luke. Tim Russert was a family man, and that probably exceeded his love for politics and news and for the Buffalo Bills. He is just too young to die! Heart attacks are sneaky things, and still many people die from a first heart attack. I know too many who have. Sunday morning will never be the same.

Elizabeth, I think it is a testament to the man that we all knew his family, and he was so proud of them. There are so many people on this thread that know every member of his immediate family’s name. He welcomed us in. I feel so badly for his family. Just before Father’s Day Meet the Press. Nope, Sunday morning will never be the same.

It was his heart, CNN reporting that it was not a heart attack, but cardiac arrest which is support to be different from a heart attack, it’s sudden, with no symptoms or previous history of heart problems. 300,000 people die from cardiac arrest every year. More to come on Tim Russert’s sudden death. We are all here for a short time, live life to it’s fullest.

Hard to believe that this Sunday I will not see this great journalist. My prayers go with him and his family. Thank you Tim for all the information you shared with us and for your splendid books. Thank you, I will miss you.

I am just learning of this terribly sad news while online here at wowowow. I am so incredibly sad. He was the best and my personal favorite, especially Sunday Mornings! I just loved watching him use that little white board during the election of 2000. His passion and integrity cannot be matched!
