wowOwow Salutes Our Friend, Tim Russert

Sadly, while sitting in the wowOwow offices on this summer Friday, we just heard the news flash that NBC News’ beloved Tim Russert died in his office today, June 12, 2008. He was 58.

Tim was a colleague to many of the wowOwow contributors, and it is with great sorrow that we announce his passing. The longtime host of NBC’s “Meet The Press,” he held court on the most successful Sunday morning news program of his time. He was also senior vice president and Washington bureau chief of NBC News.

Tim leaves behind his wife, Maureen Orth, a writer for Vanity Fair magazine; his son, Luke; and his beloved "Big Russ," the father who he regularly spoke of on air, and who he visited just last weekend. Our hearts go out to the entire Russert family in this hour.

The following is a memo sent to all of NBC Universal announcing the tragic news:

It is with incredible sadness that we share the heartbreaking news that Tim Russert passed away today, suddenly. We have lost a beloved member of our NBC Universal family and the news world has lost one of its finest. The enormity of this loss cannot be overstated. More than a journalist, Tim was a remarkable family man. Our thoughts and prayers are with his wife, Maureen; their son, Luke; and Tim’s entire extended family.

I too, am sad to learn of the untimely death of Tim Russert. He was a giant in his field and seemed to be a kind and loving man. Here is the Farrah Fawcett thread that previous posters have referred to. I also feel that the smug, cynical tone of this piece is disturbing. http://www.wowowow.com/post/farrah-fawcett-wing-and-prayer-cancer-movie-…

Valerie—I hadn’t seen the Farrah Fawcett thread until you mentioned it here in your post. [there are so many threads here now…am sure most who come to the site don’t a fraction of what exists] I didn’t know and am very sorry to hear it. There are many advances in cancer treatments today, and I hope with her determined spirit and the support of her family, friends and fans that she will recover soon. Her documentary can help. Katie Couric has also been outspoken about rectal and colon cancer since her husband died from it. Awareness helps.

Valerie, I hope you come back and read this thread at a later time. You may wish you hadn’t been so bitter. ‘Where is your empathy and kindness…?’

I hope she does. too. No matter the merit or lack thereof of the FF commentary, why would someone see fit to weigh in with “you people”..? Yes, the threads can get confusing. Today, I feel that what was three threads: father’s best advice, take too seriously, and Russert have become a braid…Don’t quite know how to unravel it given all the wonderful observations.

You are so right Harriet, that enthusiam got me everytime, particurally in this election. And what a hard worker..he seemed to be everywhere. I watched Larry King last night and his tribute…think Larry needed a bit if sleep. Tim and Tom Brokaw ,great sincere newsmen.

I am so saddend with the passing of Tim Russert. He truly was a brilliant reporter and commentator, a political visionary. A true person to himself and the public. The love he had for his father and family and i understand his friends was just phenominal. What a loss for the media and public and his family.

Much too young, and much too sad. Why do bad things happen to good peeple. He had many years ahead of him.

Tim Russert, a phenomenal individual! The way in which he conducted himself set the standard of true professionalism. I suspect many in journalism and the network media to be searching their souls in the days to come wishing they could come close to emulating the essence that was Tim Russert.

That doesn’t seem possible. He had years and years to go. I am deeply sad for his family and I will miss his reporting and humor. My friend’s granddaughter always called Mr. Russert “Mr. Cheeks” with such affection as if she, a tiny girl, could perceive what a great dad and man he was.

What a loss. Just when he would have loved to see the outcome of this election. A man of integrity and vast knowledge of what was really going on. Sad day for North and South of the border. Sad sad day. Our heart felt feelings go out to his family and friends!

Eve One of the reasons I was looking forward to election day (besides being over with this process) was to watch Tim Russert and his white board. I feel so badly for his family.

My husband being a long time political junkie taught me early that Tim would be a staple in our house.I loved that ear to ear grin, and the brillance of his never ending questions.David Gregory said it best this evening. We just never expected for him to go home this early……and in the middle of “this” election.God Bless you will be missed. I am so saddened by this news…lest the eulogy be “more about the eulogist than the eulogized”, I splurged on cable for the duration of the election process and now I feel that, after today, it will be hard to think of it as much more than an empty box… I, too, spent a lot of great Sundays with a political junkie. I miss hearing him say “Get your hat and gloves or we’ll be late for ten o’clock at Church of the Good Russert.”…
