Tina Fey Nails Palin. Again. Saturday Night Live Interview Skit with Amy Poehler as Katie Couric (VIDEOS)

Katie Couric’s interviews with the Vice Presidential candidate last week … and Sarah Palin’s performances in them … were highly controversial. Yet in the midst of the drama of the financial crisis, they played somewhat under the general news cycle radar.  However, last night’s Saturday Night Live brought the Couric-Palin interviews front and center through a skit starring Tina Fey and Amy Poehler that was devastating in its breathtaking evisceration of the Vice Presidential candidate’s answers to Couric’s questions.

Below you’ll find videos of both the real Katic Couric - Sarah Palin interviews in which the correspondant asks Palin to explain why Alaska’s proximity to Russia gave her foriegn policy credibility and the Saturday Night Live skit (complete with an embedded ad thanks to NBC Universal’s use of revenue-generating HULU versus You Tube…sorry).

Here are our questions: Was Palin’s performance with Couric Vice Presidential?  Was Couric fair in her questioning? Was SNL’s portrayal fair?  And as a comedy show, does SNL have a mandate to be "fair" anyway?  And, no matter what side you come down on l’affair Palin, how talented is Tina Fey?

Original Couric-Palin Interviews (click on-screen text prompt at end of first interview to go to second interview, which includes at the end a Kissinger video on direct negotiation with Iran):

I was reading this amazing article about this “Hick” family in Texas that most here would consider beneath them culturally - and I realized how upside down that really is. I am so outclassed by a family like this, and by Sarah Palin, and I suspect that most here are as well. 14 children adopted from various countries, most with special needs, raising them on a cattle farm - total hicks, churchie weirdos, - and then they had a big decision to make - as a family. http://www.star-telegram.com/804/story/938201.html http://www.star-telegram.com/804/story/938201.html

This is a movie that I would love to see made. But Hollywood thinks Mia Farrow is weird and people have called her all sorts of names for adopting so many special needs children. I was reminded of these intolerant attitudes towards “hicks” as I watched the movie Legally Blonde. All the Harvard law students mercilessly mocking the good-hearted Elle because she is different and not one of them - the elite. The Harvard elitists came off looking like schmucks. Turns out that HIcks, Walmart Moms’s are the backbone of this country. Many on this list so deplore that it is so.

Let’s drink to the salt of the earth…..” I don’t think anyone is against the “others”….Each of us is an “other” Anyone with a narrow view or closed mind is a schmuck in my book no matter the socio-economics,etc… This could easily turn into a Sunday morning homework assignment for “My Personal Credo”….I’ll get back to ya on that…

Beautiful Story of compassion and God’s Grace. My daughter was the !st Assistant Director on the Legal Blondie Movies. Walmart is not frowned on here in Louisiana, it is budget friendly place, the people like working there and they were the first people to bring actual help during Katrina, no strings attached.

Bella, the majority of both REAL Harvard-educated students and Walmart Moms don’t make those sorts of sweeping cultural generalizations. Judgmental, intolerant, narrow-minded snobs can be found everywhere, in every cultural group in America. “Hicks” and “Elitists” are hostile, mean-spirited labels. When you stir the pot with them, you aren’t helping the problem. But when you share stories like this, you do a great good. So, thank you for that.

It was one of the Writers at WOW, Margo Howard, that used the term “Hick” to describe Sarah Palin, which is a derogatory word. It is very ugly. Hicks, who I assume are people who are lower class - they don’t hurt others just by being who they are - as a class. “I have decided that John McCain is too clever by half. No, make that three-quarters. Not only is the breath-of-fresh-air-hockey-mom opening act proving herself to be a hick who is having trouble knowing which briefing point goes where, but her Jolt-Cola personality meant to offset his elderly-seeming self is just not doing the job.” http://www.wowowow.com/post/palin-goes-breath-fresh-air-hick-mccains-rat… On the other hand, I am victimized by elitists who have an “only me, not you” agenda. They specifically want benefits that they don’t want me to have. I need a word for the people who want the personal choice of putting their own child in a public school, but will not allow me to have that choice. Al Gore can buy a massive houseboat, and fly lear jets around the world, and own multiple mansions, but he doesn’t want me to be able to afford to do that. Union bosses want to discuss their own business in absolutely secrecy, but they want to take away the secret vote from their members. The elitists want their own protection, with armed guards but they don’t want the rest of the rest of us to have our second amendment rights. Michael Moore wants everyone to ostracize Halliburton - except him - because he owns stock in Halliburton. “OK for me - not you.” The elitists want universal health care knowing that they can always pay to fly wherever they can get the best care, while the rest of us languish in long lines, months or years long, or are forced into lottery systems for doctor appointments as happened in a desperate town in Canada. I’m sure elitists laugh when they read about the MRI in Canada that was backed up for 6 months, but handling dog and cat appointments at night on a fee basis. The elitists know that they can create these misery systems and then float above them with their money as a cushion. Should we just call them toxic hypocrites, the ones that pull up the drawbridge after they get theirs? They hurt people. They hurt families.

Now I’m really confused (what’s new?) Who is the bashed and who is the bashee?Sounds like more than enough toxicity to go ‘round here. Are you talking about the rich or the elitists or both or what? In what regards are they alike? Different? Each has the right to maintain their beliefs/actions so I’m not bashing anybody…..I can even “excuse” ignorance and greed most of the time….but not militant ignorance, militant greed…

Hick: Dictionary def: “An unsophisticated, boorish, and provincial person; rube, pertaining to or characteristic of hicks: hick ideas, located in a rural or culturally unsophisticated area: a hick town.” All true. If she doesn’t want to be labeled a hick, then she shouldn’t be one. Which she most definitely is, she’s the walking definition of one. “They hurt people. They hurt families.” This is ridiculous. No one group has hurt families and people and created more misery than Republicans, most esp GWB/Cheney and McHoover who voted with them 90% of the time will follow suit. If you have not died in a heat wave, drought, hurricane, flood, wildfire, or other climate change disaster, and like the idea of your children and grandchildren not living in desert wastelands, thank a liberal. If you have ever breathed clean air or drank clean water, thank a liberal. If no woman you know has died or been maimed in a back-alley Abortion, thank a liberal. If you have never been lynched, or had your children firebombed in a church, thank a liberal. If you are glad we don’t live in a right-wing dictatorship along the lines of what conservatives overtly and covertly created in Iran, Guatamala, Nicaragua, the Dominican Republic, the Congo, Chile, Brazil, El Salvador, the Phillipines, Indonesia and many others, thank a liberal. If you have ever used Medicare, thank a liberal. If you have not gotten cancer from radiation, thank the Nuclear test ban and thank a liberal. If you have ever sat on a public seat, drank from a drinking fountain, stood on a bus, or done anything in public without worrying about being beaten up for being in the wrong section for your skin color, thank a liberal. If you’ve ever driven on an interstate highway, thank a liberal. If you grew up in a family of less than 12 kids, like the idea of being able to choose if you have 12 kids or not, if you don’t live in an overpopulated third world slum, or just think birth control is a good idea, thank a liberal. If your family benefited from the GI Bill of Rights, FHA Mortgages, and so forth, thank a liberal. If you have ever bought anything from Europe, and are glad the Marshall plan kept it from remained a bombed-out shell or falling to communism or neo-fascism, thank a liberal. If you are glad that the Nazis don’t control half the world (conservatives opposed joining World War 2 until it was forced on them) thank a liberal. If you have ever eaten food (agricultural subsidies), flicked on a light switch (rural electrification) or benefited from the Tennessee Valley Authority, thank a liberal. If you ever drank a beer or a glass of wine without being thrown in jail, thank a liberal. If you are not a land-owning white male, but have voted, thank a liberal. If you have not died from tainted meat, been prescribed something useless or poisonous by a quack doctor, have not given your children cough syrup which turned out to have heroin as its secret ingredient, thank a liberal. (and Nixon) If your workplace is safe and you are paid a living wage, including overtime; if you enjoy a 40-hour week and you are allowed to join a union to protect your rights without being lynched, thank a liberal. If you’ve ever seen a national park, and it hadn’t been strip mined and clearcut into a desert wasteland, thank a liberal. If you have never suffered from an economy of massive deflation, and have never even heard of an economic phenomenon called a “panic”, thank a liberal. If your children go to school instead of working in coal mines, thank a liberal. If you’re a Native American and have not been killed or died in a concentration camp, or if you live near Native Americans and are not at war with them, thank a liberal. If you have an industrial or high-tech job - or really, any job other than those available in a slave-powered cash crop economy (ie, a third world economy) thank a liberal. If you’re not a slave or “indentured servant” (white slave), don’t think protection of slavery belongs in the constitution, if you’ve never been chained to a boat where half the passengers die, been whipped, had your family split up, been forced to “breed” with another slave you’ve never met, been raped by your boss, or killed for not being profitable, thank a liberal. If you oppose political parties starting massive wars to destroy America, just because they lost the election, and killing hundreds of thousands of Americans in process - if you just don’t have that much fanatical hatred of Lincoln’s policy of to restricting slavery to states where it already existed, thank a liberal. If you’re part-Irish, Catholic, Jewish, or for that matter anything not Anglo-Saxon Protestant, and are allowed to live in America, and are not harassed and attacked for failing to be born Anglo-Saxon Protestant, or if you’ve ever bought or used anything built by a non-ASP American, thank a liberal. If you kind of like freedom of speech, and don’t want the state government to be able to censor you - (you think the 14th amendment is a good idea) - thank a liberal. If you have ever bought or sold anything transported by the transcontinental railroad, or eaten food from a farm created by the railroad, thank a liberal. If you think the US constitution is pretty cool, and have ever traveled too or done business with a country whose democracy was inspired by the American revolution, thank a liberal. If you have not been drafted and used as cannon-fodder in some war caused by some petty insult between nobles, clan leaders, or other various overfed dictators, or suffered rape or looting in one of those countless wars, thank a liberal. If you have not been tortured to death in a religious inquisition, thank a liberal. If you don’t have to walk though ankle-deep sewage in the streets (because sewers are big gummint), thank a liberal. If you have ever done anything that is a religious or superstitious taboo (ie, done anything at all) without being stoned to death or cast out as a heretic, thank a liberal. If you have never been raped, and then had the rapist escape punishment on the grounds that he marry you, thank a liberal. If you are not a slave toiling to build a pyramid for some lazy dictator who’s so spoiled he thinks he’s god, and won’t even see it until he’s dead, thank a liberal. If you have not been killed as a human sacrifice in the name of some god, thank a liberal. In short, if you’ve ever enjoyed anything of the post-stone-age world, thank a liberal. …And if not, become a conservative. “Liberal policies made America the freest, wealthiest, most successful and most powerful nation in human history. Conservatism in power always threatens to undo that national progress, and is almost always frustrated by the innate decency and democratic instincts of the American people…” - Joe Conason

Bella: This is not a movie. Harvard grads are just like most smart people, some smarter than others, some emotionally vacant, some able bodied, some not so, and I assume some are real “schucks.”But if you are making this point because Obama had a Harvard education then I’d say, that’s just plain silly. There are also people like the family you cited who take in and care for all those children and am sure as I’m typing here they have their own special needs for dong so, as does Mia Farrow. But to say that women who happen to be mothers and shop at Walmart are the backbone of this country is stretching it a bit. Unfortunately, if I understand your sociological grouping, these are the same people who voted for Bush twice and got screwed three times over. Even those poor souls who work at Walmart aren’t bringing home a lot of bacon. And so your point is?

The economic backbone of this country are the Blue States (rich/well educated) that provide all the financial support for the Red State (uneducated/poor) ‘hicks’ (as you catagorize them) and “Wal-Mart Moms” (again your personification). Anyone who shops at the evil Wal-Mart that enslaves and cheats people around the globe, destroys communities and small independant businesses, etc, is very socially unaware and unconscious. http://walmartwatch.com/ An option is to shop a Costco which provides actual living wages to employees and operates by decent community standards. And another emotional and totally wrong, unsubstantiated assertion you made was that ‘elites’ mocked the film. FACTS, Bella: Arianna Huffington could rightfully be described as the #1 “elite” in the US. She is a grad of Oxford, was one the Oxford debating society, and has the #1 political blog in the world (ie per Technorati that rates the tops of the 100M blogs in the world—-her’s is number one though was created in 2005…and the blog of choice for most liberals.) Here’s what Arianna wrote about Legally Blonde (which I saw too and really enjoyed) and was dissed for doing so by reviewers like Roger Ebert: Arianna Huffington, who attended a preview screening and wrote: “Sitting between my teenage daughters while watching Elle take on the U.S. Congress, I was struck by the palpable effect it had on them: They left the theater inspired, empowered and talking about the things they wanted to change and the ways they might be able to change them.” She quotes approvingly from Elle’s big speech (“So speak up, America. Speak up for the home of the brave. Speak up for the land of the free gift with purchase. Speak up, America!”). You know, refuting your very weak and made up out of thin air assertions that so invert reality could be a full time. I leave that to others and just skip your blogs altogether because they are vapid and totally lacking in reality or FACT.

Is very socially unaware and unconscious.” Gee I may be new to the South and I Never even saw a Walmart till we moved here 3yrs ago, and We lived without power for almost a year post Katrina. But I really just started hearing negative things in regards to this particular corp. So I will give you the unaware, but I am not unconscious. I hope that you are just passionate about what you know and you did not mean that in a blanket way. My dealings with with them mainly came from Katrina. As promised I will look into your links and become aware.
