Does Hollywood Hate Tom Cruise? Liz Smith Gives Answers on Fox News (Video)

Liz Smith

Tom Cruise’s megastar status seems to be fizzling — with Hollywood criticizing him on everything. Is the world forgetting that this is a three-time Oscar nominee, who starred in big-hit films, including "Jerry Maguire," "A Few Good Men" and "Rain Man"— to name a few? From the media poking fun at his beliefs in Scientology to discrediting his new film, a historical drama called "Valkyrie," watch me on FOX News talk about the burying of Tom Cruise.

What is killing the image so carefully crafted of one of Hollywood’s stars is his arrogance, and his, “I’m right everyone else is wrong,” attitude. He is a gifted actor and I like those who stand for what they believe in Hollywood, but when they put others down to enhance what they believe then they become that person everyone loves to hate.

Perfect Nazi attitude for his new picture. Our California governor has the same one. His dad was an SS Officer in Austria, and Arnold believes in his heart of hearts that it’s his birthright to tell all the people in Cal-ee-for-nee-a what to do because he is in charge. Tom Boy is the same way. The problem, he thinks, is that we just are not hearing what he is saying. In fact, we do hear him. Scientology? Oh, dear god. We just don’t agree.

Mugsy, no-doubt ‘L-Ron’ was bonkers, but ‘Scientology’, while truly guilty of whacking perhaps 3 people, are way behind ‘Christian-Scientist’ as ‘killers’—-and aside from their relentless attack on ‘shrink-dom’, i hardly agree on Any of their ideas—-and while they will empty your pockets, as The Pope, Rush, or any fundamentalist clan—-they seem the only organized opposition to ‘Big Pharma’, and to shrinks who will blast ya for a buck into a fate worse than death—-to me, that is their value—-little else—-as for electing Any actor? Ha, you’ve been had.

So what is it that “They” are objecting to re: this film? I don’t much care whether Tom is into scientology or mythological sun gods I have always enjoyed his acting––not great, mind you, but highly entertaining.

I know about Scientologists [having unfortunately met a few], & know what basically fascist ideas it incorporates with pseudo science “clearing machines” and other repugnant practices. Taking losta money from its followers is just one thing. Scientologists are dangerous, and Germany has banned them having had a taste of this and know where it can lead. Cruise is too old for his image of a smiling, jumping hero. He has set up Scientology Tents on his film sets. He’s a fanatic. While very talented, his personal life is in meltdown and it has affected his judgement and behavior regarding his career. The rigidity and opinionated personality he has presented has not helped his popularity. However, if he made a good film that he was terrific in, I’d see it. But he seems to be a control freak that can no longer control every aspect of his life/career/

Good for you Ms. Liz Smith! I don’t understand all the negatives aimed at him (lucky I guess), but I have really enjoyed several of his films — including the ones you mentioned, plus “Far and Away,” which was so romantic with Nicole Kidman; “Minority Report,” which was based on a story by Philip K. Dick, one of my favorite authors; and “Collateral” which also showcased the amazing Jamie Foxx. I recall Oprah dissing his vampire flick. I had read the book on which it was based, and didn’t want to be disappointed, so I didn’t see the movie when it opened. When I finally did (on cable, I think, or maybe DVD), I liked it! and had no idea what all the negative nonsense had been about. So, maybe I learned my lesson. I’ll judge for myself and look forward to seeing his new film as I’m sure scrillions of others are as well.

I don’t think he has any less right to make a film about whatever he wants to make a film about, but there are many folks who won’t watch a film with Tom Cruise in it because of his antics off-screen. He has is rights, viewers have theirs.

I can’t think of any movie Tom Cruise was involved with that did not entertain me. So when I hear he is in a movie, I tend to try to see it. I think that started with Rain Man. All the buzz was about Dustin Hoffman’s great performance, but Cruise’s character was the one that went through a transformation, and Cruise made his character believable and sympathetic. Anyway, his new movie about the German army looks interesting and I look forward to seeing it. I think he got in trouble not because of his beliefs in Scientology but because of his active promotion of it and evangelical zeal—leading some to believe that he is running the organization of Scientology. I think he is just making videos for it. Anyway, Scientology, the organization, has some curious practices that have alienated people, like their Fair Game policy of attacking people who question them. And Cruise made that bizarre remark about post partum depression on the Today show for which he has since apologized, but that remark came from his religious beliefs too. What I simply do not understand is why his youngest daughter Suri caused such a papparazzi riot.

hey wouldn’t it be fun if scientology ended up being the real religion and all the rest were the bogus ones.

My Alias, Good for you. It is too easy to criticize others for their belief system. Tom Cruise, your faith is yours to experience. Meanwhile, keep the day job. I enjoy your acting.

Hey, My Alias, there is no “real religion.” All religious practices (and I note, almost all of them at some point involve getting on your knees) can lead you to the spirit of the universe if they are practiced with a pure heart, good intention, and serious practice. Naturally, that means the person practicing must have a pure heart, good intention, and serious practice, so probably the people most in need of religion ain’t gonna get it. I always loved the story about St. Francis and Poor Clare just blowing off the church, and then ending up being in the center of the church. That’s kind of what I mean. As the Vedantans say, “Many paths, one destiny.”

Right on Liz - when you talk about the “right” of any star to make any movie they want - you hit the nail on the head! Whether any of us WANT to see that movie is our choice! I’m still a Tom fan - even though I might not see this particular movie - I’ve always enjoyed his work. Rain Man is one of my all time favorite movies!

I feel he’s a good actor. He has some anger-management issues, though, and has ruffled more than a few feathers. But, he’s laughing all the way to the bank.

hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm…tom cruise…arrogant, shallow, in love with himself…maybe one out of 5 of his movies is any good..not a particularly good actor overall…i like tommy lee jones, jack nicholson, and clint eastwood a heck of a lot better…

seems most actors/politicos fill that bill—-give me the old Mastroianni, or Max Von Sydow, sophia Loren—-any Hepburn, Claudette Colbert—-these days we don’t have ‘actors’—-save the late Brando, or yet alive mr. crowe, walken, depp—-we have ‘soap’—-
