Does Hollywood Hate Tom Cruise? Liz Smith Gives Answers on Fox News (Video)

Liz Smith

Tom Cruise’s megastar status seems to be fizzling — with Hollywood criticizing him on everything. Is the world forgetting that this is a three-time Oscar nominee, who starred in big-hit films, including "Jerry Maguire," "A Few Good Men" and "Rain Man"— to name a few? From the media poking fun at his beliefs in Scientology to discrediting his new film, a historical drama called "Valkyrie," watch me on FOX News talk about the burying of Tom Cruise.

I just agreed with Cherokee on another thread but on this one… I think he is a fabulous actor. I’m with Lily… not sure i’d want him as a friend. But as an actor… he’s done some incredible stuff. I was transfixed by his piece of the movie Magnolia. One of the only things about the film I liked or remembered. And prior to very recently he just didn’t make bad movies. He has some of the best sense of a good flick of any actor out there. Unlike some other incredibly good actors… Like Angelian Jolie or Kate Hudson who can’t seem to make a good movie if their life depends on it.

This too will pass. He should lay low for awhile, and then say less instead of more. Even the greatest actors are criticized because it seems to be our nature. When someone rises to the top there is always someone wanting to take them down. I have no personal opinion on Cruise however, do sense most of the stars are a little strange. I’ll see his movie and then evaluate the movie and his acting not his personal life.. Dorothy from grammology http://grammology.com

Phyllis, personally, I think it’s just the timing. With the involvement in Iraq, the ongoing political season, some may think this is a time to focus on American patriotism. Also, all the controversy is generating a lot of free publicity for the movie. If Tom Cruise wanted the film released, he would get it released. Timing is everything. Peace and grace

I think Tom Cruise has allowed his personal life to take the spotlight from his professional life and that has diminished the perception of his talent. You can hardly look at him in a role anymore without the vision of him jumping up and down on Oprah’s sofa in the back of your mind. Also, photos of his face with his new wife rotates on the cover of every hollywood magazine and rag in existence, it’s taking the glow of his ‘star’.

Wait, I thought it was the German government that didn’t want him there because in Germany Scientology is considered a dangerous cult. Personally, I have enjoyed many of his movies (I love Interview with the Vampire; I have watched it about 20 times on tape), but his so-called “antics” color my opinion of him as a man.

Thanks, K b, that seems like a logical explanation.

Tom Cruise is a very good and caring actor, scientologist or not, I believe that he has the ability to be spellbinding on screen. Though all of his characters may not be 100% sympathetic…you do care about what happens to them. I cannot see this new role being anything different than the other roles, in terms of being an interesting portrayal. He has been around for twenty five years and his films have always done well at the box office. I guess he is picked on because he has the ability and self-confidence to take it.

I took a rare “mental health day” after seeing “Born on the 4th of July.” I was completely debilitated by the power of that film - and Cruise’s performance. Yeah, I think he’s weird, but the film is the film. If it’s good in his new film, he’ll get rich with his ‘back end’ deal, and if it’s not, he’ll be ridiculed for the film - and his personal life. Again, it’s separating the art and the artist. Woody Allen’s weird, too. But some of his films are extraordinary. Cruise’s personal life will hurt him only if, and to the degree that his film is bad.

I believe the question was…….Does Hollywood hate tom Cruise Hollywood could mean many things…………studios, movies, people who live there. So I will answer for myself. I like most of Toms movies………he’s a good and devoted Actor. I think his troubles started when he became very vocal about his religion. What’s the old saying……….never discuss politics or religion. Well we women here on Wow certainly know what discussing politics leads too. If we are talking about, books……poetry, and actually almost anything except politics we are all wonderfully behaved women………….let politics get into our threads and it’s a whole differerent pot of stew. lol That’s life and it does make it interesting.

When I think of Tom Cruise’s career I always think of TAPS first. It was a defining role for him.

I knew something was strange when I went to see Tropic Thunder and discovered he was not only in it, but also played such a large (and crazy!) role…when in fact his presence in the film is completely unmentioned in the trailers. I guess he’s bad for business now?

I’ve always thought Tom Cruise was something of a spoiled brat.

Although he is a good actor, his dissing of anybody that don’t agree with his beliefs in scientology negates that. When it comes ti his religion, he contracts “foot in the mouth” disease.
