Does Hollywood Hate Tom Cruise? Liz Smith Gives Answers on Fox News (Video)

Liz Smith

Tom Cruise’s megastar status seems to be fizzling — with Hollywood criticizing him on everything. Is the world forgetting that this is a three-time Oscar nominee, who starred in big-hit films, including "Jerry Maguire," "A Few Good Men" and "Rain Man"— to name a few? From the media poking fun at his beliefs in Scientology to discrediting his new film, a historical drama called "Valkyrie," watch me on FOX News talk about the burying of Tom Cruise.

Many people love to see an outrageously successful and RICH person dethroned. I’m not a fan of Cruise on a personal level, but then, I really don’t know the guy and neither do most of us. Professionally, he’s obviously very, very talented. When I drop $10 to see a movie he’s in, I’m always entertained by his performance. And isn’t that the criteria that really matters to most of us? He was delightful in Tropic Thunder. I can’t describe his role, you have to see it to appreciate it. Kryssi, they left his name off the theater billings to surprise the viewers. When you figure out it’s him, that’s half the reason you’re laughing. Like I said, you have to see it to appreciate what I’m saying. He IS listed in the end credis, however.

Oh definitely, the shock of FINALLY figuring out that THAT crazy you-know-what is Tom Cruise was indeed half the fun! God he was hilarious. He almost stole the film, but I think I will bestow that honor on Robert Downey, Jr.

RD Jr’s performance in Tropic Thunder was Oscar-worthy. A strange film to be Oscar-worthy in, I’ll agree, but Oscar-worthy nonetheless. That actor as resurrected himself in my eyes. You know, I went to that movie with my teenaged daughter, thinking it would be lame and crass. I left the theater laughing so hard I was crying. Didn’t you get the feeling that the actors were doing it for nothing? The movie crossed the Hollywood line so many times, I’m thinking the actors all funded it themselves.

I agree with Liz again. Tom should be clear to proceed with this film without all of the negative energy. So Tom is an enigma, okay- he ain’t alone in the eccentric behavior department. Judge him on his talent which is considerable. If he was too ambitious in this endeavor, we’ll know soon enough.

I agree. Why can’t he make a movie. It seems that since his divorce from Nicole Kidman he seems less accessible, and less like the rest of us. He has every right, and should, protect his privacy and the privacy of his children. When you get to be that big, everyone wants to please you, and life can get crowded with people who agree with you.

I really don’t keep up much on Hollywood hype so I am not sure what the stories are about Tom. Just know that I enjoy him as an actor and feel that is all I should do.

I think he’s a very good actor and have enjoyed most of the movies I’ve seen him in. I hated him as LeStat though. He wasn’t young or pretty enough to be LeStat. The Scientology thing doesn’t matter much to me. I didn’t like the things he said about Brooke Shields and postpartum depression though. The lunatic antic of jumping up on Oprah’s couch was only annoying because of the real reason I can’t stand the man. The way he treated Mimi Rogers and Nicole Kidman was reprehensible.

i don’t know if hollywood hates tom cruise. i think there was a while when hollywood tried to distance itself from tom cruise. his religious pursuits don’t interest me per se, but what i don’t like is proselytizing. and i think when he puts a massage tent on his film set that is staffed with scientology proselytizers who sell the belief system while giving their massages, that is a bit bizarre. but where he really lost me was is totally inappropriate criticism of brooke shields and of anti-depressants. i realize it is a tenet of scientology not to believe in psychology and psychiatry, and he has every right to hold that opinion and not avail himself of those practices, but espousing those beliefs publicly was way out of line since his is entirely unqualified to make those determinations. he is very high-profile and uses that status to deliver his agenda and i don’t like that. as an actor, he doesn’t have a very broad range, but when he chooses his films carefully and stays within his range he can be quite entertaining.

I seriously doubt Hollywood hates anyone who makes as much money for them as Tom Cruise does. I also seriously doubt they love Tom Cruise because he is like a loose cannon and uncntrolable. When he doesn’t make money for them any more, they will dump him. I haven’t seen any of his films except Rain Man which I enjoyed.

I like Tom Cruise’s movies for the most part. They are always entertaining. I don’t find him to be the highest caliber actor (as say, Jack Nicholson or Ed Harris even), but his films are entertaining. His personal beliefs, I feel, should remain personal. His spouting off about postpartum depression made me very angry. I did not suffer from it, but I am in the health care profession, dealing with women having had premature and/or sick neonates. I have seen and heard about too many people suffering from it to not believe it exists. In my opinion, he just needs to keep his mouth shut about things he cannot possibly be an authority on, and the world will go on without thinking he’s a raving lunatic. Just do what you do Tom, ACT, don’t preach to us.
