Torture Holding up Holder Confirmation

By The Staff at wowOwow.com

Eric Holder will likely have to wait a week before the Senate confirms his place as the next Attorney General.

Republican leaders today urged a delay because they’re worried Holder will use his position to prosecute interrogators accused of torturing detainees. Holder caused a bit of a frenzy last week when he said that, yes, waterboarding counts as torture, an admission Bush officials refused to make. With that confirmation, however, Holder now has the GOP worried he’ll start prosecutions. Thus, John Cornyn, the Republican Senator who’s also holding up Hillary Clinton’s confirmation, refuses to proceed until Holder says whether or not he would prosecute intelligence officials:

It could well be there will be a request to delay the markup for a week so those questions can be asked and answered. Part of my concern relates to his statements at the hearing with regard to torture and what his intentions are toward our intelligence personnel who were operating in good faith based on their understanding of what the law was.

Cornyn and his colleagues hope that Holder will go easy on people who were following orders and thought their actions fell within the lines of the law. For example, how people thought — or think — waterboarding’s an acceptable interrogation method.

For example, how people thought — or think — waterboarding’s an acceptable interrogation method. Okay, go for it Dems. Investigate the bejesus out of every general and non-com in the Army, and while you’re at it don’t forget Colin Powell. His little lie to the American public hasn’t been forgotten, either. Let’s investigate every bad decision made by the Bush Administration, and when we’re finished with them, we’ll start on Obama because by then, he will have a few mistakes to his credit. Let’s do it. We’ve got the money — the printing presses haven’t worn out yet, have they?

Marjorie, even though I know you won’t agree—some things meed to be addressed and torture is one of them. It has demeaned this country and frankly torture serves no real purpose—experts I’ve read say you can get more info out someone chemically and through other methods that don’t destroy our humanity—this didn’t need to happen.

Amen. This country needs to go forward, but their are too many of those running this nation that have so much hate, that they can’t get past it.

Violation of international law and convention isn’t just “boys will be boys.” If you commit a crime, you are submitted to the dock. It must be investigated, and we must come up with restraints to ensure that we never again torture people. Pretending that it was “no big deal” IS the problem.

Torture is a bit more than a bad decision. Invading Iraq was a bad decision. Torturing people is evil. That being said, I don’t think we need to investigate every little peon who was engaged in it. I do think that we need to investigate the people who were in charge when this whole thing happened. They are the problem as they allowed torture to enter the system as an acceptable action. Most of the people who have gotten into trouble for it, like Lyndie England, really only did it because they were stupid, ignorant and were told to by their superiors.

just following orders’ may be acceptable to some—-yet others, as many German workers in Nazi concentration camps, have said ‘No’ to criminal acts. the only significant negative act of Mr. Powell was stopping the Brit’s request to destroy Saddam’s Republican Guard—-who later used illegal-weapons (nerve-gas) provided by US, for use vs. Iran, to slaughter thousands of Kurds. we will all die here, but as a ‘proof’ of a future Heaven, where all go, good or bad, and shows one’s concern is not going to an un-proven Hell, rather your eternal future status as ‘high, or low’—-your acts lead to such—-i’ve worked for ‘the greatest good for the greatest number’—-Millsian Socialism—-so i expect high eternal status—-you? well, you may flip my soy-burgers, forever and ever—- you do have an option as a ‘low-status’ dweller of Heaven—-seemingly die there, to return here, Heaven’s distant past—-be a better person, get an eternal ‘raise’—-rather tidy paradigm—-see ya!

Marjorie —-I guess everyone is overlooking the fact that Eric Holder/Janet Reno were the ones responsible for trying to enter a compound in Texas — went in with guns blazing — the leader of the compound (can’t remember his name) burned the place to the ground with his followers inside. Isn’t that some kind of torture? Shouldn’t they be held responsible. Didn’t happen! There is just something about this guy that raises questions — and the little Gonzales boy in Miami that he and Janet Reno sent back to Cuba. Was that ever rebuked by the Clinton administration? Didn’t happen. Now, this clown is being considered as head of our national security. That is scary! Don’t worry about having the money. The guy being considered as head of the IRS is the same joker who conveniently forgot to pay his taxes and took his kid’s summer camp expenses out on his business expenses. So now he’s going to be around all that money! :) And, it just gets funnier and funnier. :) Maybe we should just investigate every living breathing joker that we’ve voted into office — both sides of the aisle. Clean house and start all over again! :)

as a USF ‘Bull’ (wearing a ‘gator’ jacket—-it’s cold), i’ve suggested the same route—-Canadian-type system, or others where political-criminals’ may be more effectively dealt with—-time to call in a ‘cleaner’—-time Americans become such—-they cruise in ignorance from a past world, long-dead—-time for our next revolution—-

gulliver….”Wearing a ‘gator’ jacket”! :) Love it! You must live in the Tampa/Gulf coast area. Believe me it’s warmer there than here. Right now tem is about 32 and falling. By the way, I wore my ‘gator’ sweats to the office today along with just about everything warm I could find in the house. High today was 42. That’s not cold to some on here who live further north — but when you live in Florida your blood truns to Orange Juice! Baby it’s cold outside! Yep — throw the bums out!!!!!

hey, i may be in a ‘busted-flat’ cycle, saw the leather, cotton custom Jeff Hamilton in a thrift—-totally customized by Ted Kimer—-the ‘base-coat’s $2 bucks, the custom work? such brings a grand in LV—-here? still the same hole i left for Cal in the 60’s—-can’t sell a real dollar for $.50—-and we’ve ‘hard-freeze warnings—-i drove through the Yukon—-45 below + 30 knot wind—-saved only by miracle—-+ years at 7,000 ft.in Cal—-but you’re correct, acclimate to the swamp? stay warm—-and yeah, time to clean house—-ya want i should call Jean Leno—-Nataly Portman?—-odd she grew-up to star in ‘V’—-now there’s an example of ‘tossing -the bums’—-

beverly linens….Yeah, right back to the hell in Cuba that his mother took him from! She wanted him to have a better life in the US. She drowned off the shore after being on a raft for days. Really sad that Janet Reno/Holder made him return to the slums in Cuba after his mother had fought, saved her money for years, and, finally had the opportunity to bring him to the US, her relatives, and a better life for her son! Her relatives had a job for her. Her dream was the same as many immigrants who come to this country. Think about this — she actually wanted to come to this country and become a citizen — earn her own way. Now, we have illegal immigrants coming to this country and going on the dole the minute their feet hit our soil. There are people in Florida who are still disgusted with Janet Reno’s decision. In fact after Janet Reno left office — she returned to Miami and later ran for office. She was resoundly defeated in her try. IMO — what goes around comes around!

Lady Gator, you and I both know if it had been the reverse we would have called it kidnapping. She risked his life doing what she did. He was well fed and well cared for, we might not like Castro, but in this case he played us like a violin, because he was in the right. That boy wasn’t old enough to decide if he wanted to put his life at risk. Sorry
