ETCETERIST: Hi, Tory! Thanks for inaugurating the first wowOwow Style Quiz. My friend Carolyne Ansome used to do these in the Times of London so I wanted to try it here in the U.S. First question, what’s on your calendar today?
TORY BURCH: I just came from checking on our newest store that opened at 38-40 Little West 12th Street here in Manhattan, which is very exciting. And I just learned we are selling tons of our first compilation CD in our stores and on our website, toryburch.com. All the money is going to Save the Children. That’s what I am most excited about, and we are working on our second one, probably to benefit the NRDC.
ETC: Isn’t it scary to open a new store in today’s tortured economy?
TORY: It certainly is tough, but we are not stalling in our plan to open stores in different places, continuing with our growth — but we are definitely cutting back elsewhere and being very careful and conservative.
ETC: You’re traveling this holiday with your ex-husband, Chris Burch, which you do a lot for the sake of your kids, don’t you?
TORY: We do. We’ve rented a house on St. Bart’s.
ETC: I hear Guy Ritchie has asked Madonna to spend the holidays together for the sake of their kids. What advice would you give Madonna?
TORY: I’d tell her to go. It’s great for your children. Breathe through it. Peace is good for the kids!
ETC: OK, here come the style questions. Answer with the first thoughts that come to mind. What’s in your makeup bag?
TORY: Bobbi Brown products.
ETC: Your essential on a deserted island?
TORY: Pat Wexler moisturizer.
ETC: What is your beauty secret?
TORY: Drinking lots of water.
ETC: What do you wear on a fat day?
TORY: I wear slimmer clothes, not bigger clothes, to remind me it’s time to go the gym.
ETC: How would your female friends describe your style?
TORY: Eclectic.
ETC: What is your most treasured item in your wardrobe?
TORY: A pendant from my father.
ETC: Without what do you never leave home?
