Livni: Israel's Attacks a 'Legitimate Right to Self-Defense'

Livni: Israel Changed the 'Equation' © AFP

Israel changed the "equation" that favored the Islamic terrorist group Hamas when they attacked the Gaza strip, Israeli Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni said today. Livni told foreign representatives from the European Union today that Israel’s actions represent "a legitimate right to self-defense." She defends Israel’s actions saying the citizens of Israel had enough of feeling threatened and the attack changed the "equation." CNN reports:

"Before the military operation, the equation was that Hamas targets Israelis whenever it likes, and Israel shows restraint," Livni said. "This is something that stopped in a day in which we initiated the military operation. This is not going to be [any] longer the equation in this region. When Israel is targeted, Israel is going to retaliate."

On December 27, Israel began its air assault on Gaza — destroying mosques, which allegedly were used to store weapons, and leveled the homes of some suspected Hamas operatives. The EU foreign ministers — led by Czech Foreign Minister Karel Schwarzenberg — are part of a delegation that arrived in the region on a mission to defuse tensions and re-establish a cease-fire between Israel and the Hamas leaders in Gaza.

Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak said that the assault will go on until neighboring Israeli communities are safe from attack. An official Hamas leader said that they’re ready for a long battle. It is being reported that Israel has several goals to achieve, including providing a sense of safety in the region, severely weakening Hamas and preventing Hamas from re-arming. Click here to watch the Reuters report. No end is in sight. Senior Hamas official Mahmoud al-Zahar said Monday in a televised address, CNN reports, that there’s no intention of stopping its rocket fire toward Israel.

Mayor Bloomberg, who visited Israel this weekend and had to take shelter after rockets exploded in the town he was in, also shared in Livni’s and Barak’s convictions. He said that Israel has a right to defend itself, and that he fully understands Israel’s actions in attacking Hamas to stop missiles from raining down on southern Israeli cities and also related Israel’s situation to America’s War on Terror.

"You should rest assured, if anyone in New York was being threatened, my instruction to the NYPD would be to use all the resources at their disposal to protect civilians," he said, reports the New York Post.  He added, "I think, as a New Yorker, we’ve been attacked twice by al-Qaeda itself. We’ve seen enormous devastation and courage, and after that you sort of feel you have a bond, if you will, for those who live in a dangerous world and subject to someone trying to kill them."

I have had a strange feeling about all this and have come to the conclusion that this is happening now for several reasons : - the very pro israel Bush administration, with the approval of the incoming Obama administration, gave a “go” to israel. This is the perfect time, Bush on his way put, Obama not in yet, Americans distracted during the holidays, do it now and both administrations have cover. - Israel does not take any s**t from anyone and is determined to end Hamas once and for all, do it now and then go for “peace’ talks once Obama comes in. This is the perfect opportunity. I am optimistic about most things, but NOT the Israeli/Palestine conflict. I do not see a solution EVER, it will go on and on, as it has for centuries, with no resolution, just a series of stand offs. Maybe the two state solution will come someday, but I don’t see it. This is basically a religious war, and does anyone ever see one side saying to another ” you know what, you’re right and I am wrong “. It will never happen, because it means denying your religious tenants, add centuries of resentment and you have the makings of a totally intransigent stance. As an atheist I want to slap them both and say “Stop it”, your bible is a made up piece of fiction and not worth all the bloodshed, especially when I see it escalating to a possible nuclear war that will involve us all. What is the answer here ?? Does anyone see any resolution to this ? As an American, I am backing the Israeli Democracy and totally understand what they are doing, but ultimately see any religious war as total Bulls**t . Both sides. And as long as this goes on, there will be conflict in the entire mid-east.

EKA, I am totally with you. It will never be resolved. I do wish you could slap some sense in those people and tell them that they are killing for something that really is based on resentment and religious tenents that have not stood the test of time for most of us. I have read at least eight different explainations this past week of why there is conflict “over there”. It depends on who is doing the explaining about who is in the wrong and why they are wrong. And with revisionist history I don’t think they really understand why they are still killing each other for these many centuries.

Opps, spelling mistakes noticed. And the fighting and killing have been going on way before Isreal declared itself a state.

I saw a report suggesting that the timing was due in part to an upcoming Israeli election.

I heard the timing is due to Israel not being sure if they would have carte blanche under an Obama administration. Check out Jon Stewarts thoughts on it (it is in his news report at the beginning): http://www.hulu.com/watch/51025/the-daily-show-with-jon-stewart-mon-jan-…

I’m for peace in Isreal. I’m for security in Palestine. So I’m not real happy with either side killing each other’s children. Killing doesn’t settle anything. And neither does starving people out. Hamas may be a little more straightforward in their statements about wanting the destruction of Israel, but Hamas doesn’t speak for all Palestinians. And Israel’s actions speak louder than words. I know Condi’s vacuous little Annapolis efforts were worthless, bu I thought Tony Blair was gonna get in there and do something. What happened with that? I don’t know anything about the Q’ran. But in the Hebrew Bible, this all started with a jealous woman manipulating Father Abraham to send his son, Ishmael and Ishmael’s mother, Hagar off into the desert. Well, miraculously enough, they survived. And here we are. With so much blood in the streets, it’s time for reason to stand up to emotion. Nobody’s faith needs to be demeaned for everyone’s to be affirmed.

I feel that neither side is right or wrong and neither side will ever “give up”…When Isreal was attacked they had ever right to defend themselves. What some dont want to see is that a terrorist will put their family in homes and let them get attacked. They dont care…I am sure most of the Hammas families that have been injured or killed were women and young girls. I am pretty sure their boys were protected… Terrorists are just that terrorists, they dont care who they hurt or kill. They are right and there is nothing you can do or say that will change their minds. I even feel if a terrorist was given the chance to talk directly to GOD and see that he is the only GOD, they still wouldnt believe it and if one of theirs came back from the dead and said there is no 40 virgins waiting for us, they still wouldnt believe it. They are right and that is that… I feel for the families who have been caught in the middle and pray that my Jewish friends families arent hurt in anyway that live there. My church was planning a trip to Isreal in a couple of months…I am sure those plans have been put on hold. I wish peace for those nations but know that will never happen. If I may ask why do people over there hate the Jews so much?

C Hardy - I will attempt to answer your question, “why do people over there hate the Jews so much?”. Perhaps you already have surmised a few of the answers but here are a couple more. 1) In 1948 the United Nations took land from the Palestinians and made a Jewish State so that the Jewish people would forever have a homeland that would welcome them if they were ever again forced to flee nations that threatened them and their liberty. Were the Palestinians asked to give up their farms and homes? Or if they decided to remain in the new Jewish State, called Israel, could they accept the fact that they would not have the right to hold elective office or vote? 2) During the subsequent conflicts in the years that followed the Israeli Air Force and Army smashed the combined Arab armed forces to such a degree that the entire region felt humiliated. Further resentments were born. 3) Now that Israel has changed it’s Constitution regarding non-Jewish residents having the right to vote and hold office, the enmity from most of the Arab States has ceased. 4) The Palestinians who have cried out for their Homeland are too often led by leaders who would rather continue the conflict than settle for peace and borders. In Gaza, they have even elected a majority of terrorists from the Hamas organization to represent them in their government. No explanation for this stupidity except wounded pride and a bravado that is devastating to the citizenry. The Palestinians leaders have found a sympathetic friend in the state of Iran (a non-Arab country) who provides (sells or gives) armament to the terrorists and probably cash to live well (remember the Arafats and their luxurious residence in Paris) who will then continue the fight against the Israelis while issuing proclamations that all Israelis must die ….or nonsense in a similar vane. Too many have died on each side. The hate is now passed from generation to generation. Do you notice that no one is talking about peace in the Middle East - only a ceasefire? In my opinion, the Palestinians could have had their country by now if women ruled the country.

sorry - I botched the last line. Should read, The Palestinians could have their own country by now if women ruled the territories.

Bonnie, thank you for the information and YES I can see why Isreal would be hated so much in the Middle East. I do think its awful that no one is talking about peace b/c there will never be peace when dealing with terrorists. Its such a shame…The innocents are always the one’s who get hurt.

JERUSALEM - Israel is believed to be using controversial white phosphorus shells to screen its assault on the heavily populated Gaza Strip yesterday. The weapon, used by British and US forces in Iraq, can cause horrific burns but is not illegal if used as a smokescreen.” from today’s commondreams so if you wonder why people hate israel so much, here is an example of the answer. i personally want israel and palestine to succeed. that is why i tell israel to be proportional, rational and visionary, like jimmy carter.

Israel has a right to self-defense—however Israel has created the problem by in essence holding Gaza hostage by blockading them for that last 16 mos. since the cease-fire. Frankly Israel and Hamas are of like mind—slaughter no matter the reason.

Frank, I hope you read some of the links I just dropped down below.

Diana I know the history of the region fairly well and still believe that Israel brought much of this on themselves esp by blockading Gaza during the cease fire. I have no truck with Hamas but it is supported by a large part of the Gazan population. Fatah is essentially a non-entitly and no longer a major player in the region. Iran and Syria bear much of the blame for what is happening in the region but so does Israel. By interdicting Gaza and denying them medical and humanitarian aid Israel makes itself no better than Hamas as a terrorist group IMO. If one reads the history of the founding of the Jewish state and not Leon Uris’ execrable book one realizes that the Israelis acted as terrorists and razed Arab villages and dispossessed hundreds of thousands of arabs from their livelihood and homes which led to the current on-going situation in the Gaza Strip and in the Lebanese refugee camps.. This was unconscionable on Israel’s part then as it is now. The leaders of the Stern Gang, the Irgun and the Haganah should have been brought to international trial for the war crimes they perpetrated. As for the West Bank Israel should get it’s fanatical fundamentalists the hell out of the West Bank by force is necessary and deny their tenuous claims to this area. Jerusalem should be partitioned under UN law and administration. Now as for the Arab World, which allowed the slaughter of their own in the refugee camps in Lebanon in 1970 and in continuing their support of terrorist organizations and not helping Arab refugees I have nothing but contempt. They have used their people callously and contemptuously for decades now and the key word is “used”.

Please get familiar with the history of the Middle East, especially after the Brits partitioned it after the fall of the Ottoman Empire, which is the source of the problems. Population of Israel—6-8 million in a country roughly the size of Rhode Island. Population of Arab countries surrounding it is in the neighborhood of 300 million. I am going to drop links in here that I did in the Gaza section. Please listen to Dennis Ross’ discussion that took place in March ‘08. This is a terribly complicated situation. The Israelis cannot put up with Hamas lobbing rockets over the borders every day. These are not homemade jobs; the large ones are more than likely financed by Iran. Or Syria. At any rate, please read the links. Thank you. I urge you to listen to the audio of Ross. He was spot on. http://www.washingtoninstitute.org/templateC06.php?CID=1204 I apolgize for dropping in so many links, but most people in this country are not familiar with the history of Israel and the Middle East. I have been studying it for 50 years, and just want to share these items with you all. I have learned over all this time that it pays to know history…
