'Upskirt' Rogue Photography - A New Porn Genre That Might Be Starring You

The growing phenomenon of stealth upskirt photography is fueling a new online porn craze with few laws to protect the victims

Dual digital technologies in the form of the cell phone and the Internet are combining to fuel the latest online pornography craze, and this time, the "stars" of the show are unsuspecting women going about their daily routines.

"Upskirt" photographers are voyeurs who use their cell phones to take stealth photographs or videos of women’s rear ends as they climb stairs, go up escalators, climb in and out of cars. In most cases, the victim is unaware of the photography, and when they are, there are few legal remedies to redress the assault.

In an article on Salon.com today, author Tracy Clark-Florey describes the case of a young 16-year-old woman in Tulsa, who was surprised to find an upskirter taking a photo under her skirt as she shopped in the local Target. The subsequent case against the perpetrator was dropped on the "grounds that the girl did not, as required by the state’s Peeping Tom law, have ‘a right to a reasonable expectation of privacy,’ given the public location."

Online, these photographers have created a whole new genre of pornography, complete with message boards and forums where aficionados debate techniques and body areas, as well as the allure of different types of women subjects.

there definitely needs to be laws to stop it…. because i’m pretty sure there are laws that would put ME in jail if I caught some a-hole upskirting me or anyone else.

Good grief! This sounds like a bunch of prepubescent boys. Do these people have nothing else to do with their time? If arrested, they should be made to do farm work or something like real work for at least 50 hours a week. What kind of dorks are these people?

Great article because this really is something that is escalating in every state. More and more men are engaging in this activity and it is indeed ALL OVER the internet. My suggestion to fellow female posters is to take some time to investigate this new sexual “kink” online so that you are aware of what they are looking for and modify your actions when in public. Just so you know they only hit the females in skirts, it appears the panty shot is what turns them on.

This is not new at all, although cell phone cameras are part of the problem. The Tulsa ruling was baffling, since the guy was apparently literally on the floor sticking his phone between the girl’s legs. You’d think they could nail him for assault or child porn. Fortunately about half the States are enacting laws making this activity illegal. Meanwhile, women really need to think about NOT wearing microminis with thong underwear or even less underneath; or tiny, flared-out denim skirts that hide NOTHING for those below you on the escalator. A lot of upskirt shots are just opportunistic. If you don’t want a particular body part photographed, don’t allow it to be seen! And if a guy is crawling around behind you, you might accidentally step back, preferably in stiletto heels, and spear the hand holding the camera. Oops. I didn’t see you on the ground there.

PS, in the Tulsa case I would have argued that INSIDE my clothes is not a public area, and therefore protected by the existing peeping-Tom law. Wonder why it’s so hard to have those boundaries respected by the law?
