Vanity Fair Fans the Kerfuffle at The New Yorker

In the spirit of "affectionate rivalry" with their corporate sister at Condé Nast, Vanity Fair magazine has posted a fun-poking version of The New Yorker’s controversial Obama cover from last week.

As to Vanity Fair’s view of their colleagues downstairs at The New Yorker, the post states, "We play softball every year, compete for some of the same stories and share an elevator bank. (You can tell the ones who are headed to the 20th floor by their Brooklyn pallor and dog-eared paperbacks.")

Here for comparison, is the original Obama cover from The New Yorker.

I think they should do a cover of McCain, all frustrated and red in the face at a fundraiser leaking the details of Obama’s trip.

How about Bush in a McCain mask going Trick-or-Treating?

Gee, McCain in a walker. He’s not that much older that me. Maybe it’s time for me to go “:walker shopping”. I thought it funny. I really liked the line ” Brooklyn Pallor and dog-eared paperbacks”.

Actually as I look again at this, the Vanity Fair cover pretty much depicts the McCains as they really are, except for a couple slight exaggerations (ie. the walker). The New Yorker cover depicts the Obamas the way the ditto heads see them, not as they really are. Huge difference.

Let’s see, they’ve got a picture of McCain’s best friend, Mr. Bush on the wall, Cindy is holding a fistfull of meds, McCain’s got a patch on his head, he’s walking with a walker, I can’t seem to make out what he’s burning in the fireplace. So I guess the point is McCain’s old and ready to croak, and since he admires Bush, his presidency will be a continuation of the Bush policy. That pretty much covers everyone’s greatest fears: that’s he’s too old to be president and that he’ll continue the Bush policy. Works for me, we’ll see.

What’s burning—the constitution looks like when you enlarge the pic.

Frank: “… the constitution looks like when you enlarge the pic.” Thanks. So the fears we have are: McCain’s too old to be president, he’ll continue the Bush policy, and he’ll trash the constitution. I’m starting to believe The Vanity Fair has done a pretty good job.

No the fears are actually; 1) that a McCain presidency will be 4 more years of Bush policy based upon what McCain’s policies are on all issues, thus doom for this country because we can’t take another 4 years of Bush policy here OR abroad. And 2) that McCain either has early onset Alzheimer’s or really just does not know the difference between Shia and Sunni, that Czechoslovakia is now the Czech Republic, and that Iraq and Pakistan DON’T share a border as he said they do, to name just a few of the recent gaffes.

I agree, De—I also hear a great deal about his military leadership—how does leadership equate with flying an F-4 off a carrier? If that ‘s what people consider military leadership we’re in big trouble.

Agreed! I think Obama shows leadership every time he answers one of McCain’s criticisms about his views! He comes across so level headed and unflappable and his responses are intelligent and well thought out… yet always diplomatic, he doesn’t stoop down to their level.

Frank “What does leadership equate with flying an F-4 off a carrier” I have a question for you. Did you ever fly an F-4 off a carrier — were you shot down and held in a prison camp for 5 years and tortured every day? Would you have taken the offer from the North Vietnamese to leave and go off and leave your men behind? Do you still have scars over various parts of your body because of the torture? Do you have problems raising your arms because of the torture? Speaking as the wife of a former Lt Commander — who, by the way, flew one of those F-4’s off a carrier during Vietnam — I can never tell you the amount of leadership that is required. That leadership consists of hoping, that by some chance, your efforts will help all your fellow comrades on the ground. And, judging from some of your posts, maybe, in some way, my husband’s leadership with his unit enabled you to do your job on the ground in Nam.

Lady Gator - As always, your remarks are pertinent, well written and thoughtful. Frank has made similar remarks, much to my surprise and sorrow, as to John McCain’s military service and ordeal suffered in Viet Nam.
