Vanity Fair Fans the Kerfuffle at The New Yorker

In the spirit of "affectionate rivalry" with their corporate sister at Condé Nast, Vanity Fair magazine has posted a fun-poking version of The New Yorker’s controversial Obama cover from last week.

As to Vanity Fair’s view of their colleagues downstairs at The New Yorker, the post states, "We play softball every year, compete for some of the same stories and share an elevator bank. (You can tell the ones who are headed to the 20th floor by their Brooklyn pallor and dog-eared paperbacks.")

Here for comparison, is the original Obama cover from The New Yorker.

Speaking of coverage, CBS has shown itself to be quite biased on McCain’s behalf. After Katie Couric’s interview with McCain last night CBS edited and changed a response McCain made to a question in order to hide his huge error from the American people. McCain who presumes to be the “expert” on Iraq, either rewrote history, or just made another huge error regarding the Iraq War and the surge. McCain stated that the surge strategy was responsible for the “Anbar Awakening,” in which Sunni sheiks turned against Al Qaeda, helping in turn to reduce violence in the country. WRONG! In fact, as Spencer Ackerman and Ilan Goldenberg have reported, the record firmly establishes the opposite: instead of being caused by the surge, the key signs of the Anbar Awakening occurred not only before that strategy was implemented, but before it was ever conceived. CBS aired Couric’s question but took out his answer and replaced it with a response to another question. Ironic that this happened on the very day McCain released a video saying OBAMA is the darling of the media. Not only are the networks playing down McCain’s many gaffes and errors regarding the war he says he’s the expert on… now they’re even covering up for him.

All of this criticism of the Obama New Yorker cover is getting old. Don’t you think this current love-fest by the mainstream media surrounding Obama’s visit abroad more than makes up for a little satire? Quit your bellyachin and get on with the real issues of this campaign. If you can’t stand this heat…

So ageism is fair game? Odd reaction considering our demographic here. I dislike ageist stereotypes as much as I do ethnic or religious ones. But it’s not currently politically incorrect to make fun of older people.

I agree sanders c. There is much more to be concerned about McCain than his age. The age thing is a diversion and a non issue.

sanders: “But it’s not currently politically incorrect to make fun of older people.” Women and older people are fair game in our society. “Odd reaction considering our demographic here.” Isn’t it, though. Some people like to live their lives in a vicarious fashion. Latch on to a 40-year-old, and others might not notice you’re 70.

Ageism is as much fair game as religion and race. But that’s not what I meant. I’ve ceased to care about the flack over the New Yorker cover.

Vanity Fair….Exceedingly the “BEST” magazine ever. Sheer class, best writers and articles, even those articles that at first glange, one may not find interesting will then explode with excitement to the point of wishing the article never ended!. I have been a faithful devotee to this magazine forever and the only one I subscribe to. I can’t be bothered with the People’s and US rags, who IMO are banal at best. My husband who is a die-hard Time and Newsweek reader, loves and reads VF now as well!

I never read Vanity Fair, that I can remember anyway, I’m not a big magazine reader. But all the positive comments about it in here have made me want to purchase an issue and take a closer look.

Hi Winery, It was funny when you said you first read the Graydon page first, then proust. I always do the reverse of that, lol. I love the proust questionair, as even though the questions are very short and to the point, they give you an indepth view of the guests mind…facinating. I tried to get into Wired, unfortunately i just couldn’t get into it, I am keen some of the new gadgerty found at the Sharper image store or looking in the backs of the airline mag. “Sky Mall” which has some pretty interesting stuff! Usually after I see some of the inventive things, I think “Darn, Why didn’t I think of that” :) Happy posting!

Hi James, I know, you’re right, they are. It’s just that V F takes the cake for me. My husband reads the others and I’ll usually take a peek at something he say’s ” Hey, take a look at this article, then that’s about the only real time I get into it.
