Vanity Fair Fans the Kerfuffle at The New Yorker

In the spirit of "affectionate rivalry" with their corporate sister at Condé Nast, Vanity Fair magazine has posted a fun-poking version of The New Yorker’s controversial Obama cover from last week.

As to Vanity Fair’s view of their colleagues downstairs at The New Yorker, the post states, "We play softball every year, compete for some of the same stories and share an elevator bank. (You can tell the ones who are headed to the 20th floor by their Brooklyn pallor and dog-eared paperbacks.")

Here for comparison, is the original Obama cover from The New Yorker.

In terms of true satire, The New Yorker did it best. I wonder why Vanity Fair bothered to try to upstage the hype and sensationalism following The New Yorker’s publication of their Obama cover. Sure, McCain is older, but where is the satire in this fact? The caricature falls short of a Rip Van Winkle. Frankly, I think many Americans are less disturbed by McCain’s age than feeling uncomfortable about Obama’s lack of experience and his ethnicity. For those who feel this way, I don’t think taking shots at the McCains overtly or through satire will change their mind in November.

It’s my impression that Vanity Fair wasn’t doing a satire on McCain, they were doing a satire on The New Yorker. Or else, just poking fun at The New Yorker.

De Burca,
You are right! Vanity Fair said this was poking fun at the New Yorker. However VF poked utilized things that are true, while the NY utilized falsehoods, that some people perceive as true.
So to similarly ‘satirize’, VF would have to make fun of negative, outrageous lies and spin, being circulated about McCain and the Mrs. I would cite an example, but I just can’t think of any right now.

You can’t think of any because the Democrats aren’t running that sort of campaign. We are running FOR something and are not running a slimy internet campaign full of false rumors playing to the lowest common denominator.

I’ll continue to read “True Story”. Their stories move me much more than the New Yorker and Vanity Fair stories. And True Story has some great cover pictures.

Maybe they should have satirized McCain’s violent temper. I’ve seen rumors that he’s abusive so why not give Cindy Lou a black eye? It would be no more outrageous than what TNY did to the Obamas.

I’ve seen rumors that he’s abusive” ???????????? So, you want them to do a cartoon cover of an abused wife on the basis of RUMORS? Why not…what’s a little more yellow journalism!

Rumors are far less malicious than outright lies, but both fall well short of anything I consider honorable or honest.

Boy, there sure are a lot of people with no sense of humor around here…

The New Yorker’s cover is, at least, compelling. It,rightly or wrongly, raises the concern that candidate Obama has inappropriate closeness to a national enemy. Vanity Fair’s cover seems only capable of raising the concern that McCain is old.

Perhaps you should watch the piece Night Line did on John McCain that may give you some good Ideas. The McCain one does not compare to the insulting one you did of the Obamas. Bet your a very big republician.

Gee, Carol Harrod - A comedian would just love the softball you through. Your reply to Karen included the line “bet you are a very big republican”. And, of course, the punchline would be: …..and what does that make you, a teeny tiny democrat???? Couldn’t resist.

Gee, Bonnie Oliver - Carol “through” a softball? Us teeny tiny democrats, you just never know what to expect from us next! (You, of course, are quite predictable.)

Couldn’t resist.

Countrywoman - Good, I like consistency in thought. Sorry about the “through” when it should have been “threw”.

countrywoman…This year there is no predictable. It could go either way on both sides of the fence! Sometimes the more things “change” the more they remain the same!!!
