Palin: Without Bailout, U.S. May Be Headed Toward Another Great Depression (Video)
Sarah Palin has used the dreaded "D" word.
The United States could be headed for another Great Depression if Congress doesn’t act fast to steady the economy, the Republican vice-presidential candidate said Wednesday.
Palin was interviewed by "CBS Evening News" anchor Katie Couric. In response to whether we’re headed toward another depression if Congress doesn’t approve the $700 bailout package, Palin said: "Unfortunately, that is the road that America may find itself on."
"Not necessarily this as it’s been proposed has to pass or we’re going to find ourselves in another Great Depression, but there has got to be action taken, bipartisan effort, Congress – not pointing fingers, at this point, at one another – but finding a solution to this, taking action and being serious about the reforms on Wall Street that are needed," she added.
Calling this a "crisis moment for America, really the rest of the world," Palin said inaction could lead to the "ultimate adverse effects on Main Street."
Palin’s interview with Couric came during her visit to New York to meet with foreign leaders at the United Nations. As the Alaska governor sought to establish her credentials in world affairs, First Lady Laura Bush said Palin lacked sufficient foreign policy experience but was "a quick study."
Laura Bush told CNN that she thought Palin had "a lot of really good common sense" and commended her executive experience.
Palin’s popularity also may be dropping a bit. She gave John McCain quite a boost when he named her to his ticket to defeat Barack Obama in the White House race.
USA Today reports that earlier this month, an Associated Press-Yahoo News poll showed more people viewing Palin favorably than unfavorably, 47% to 28%. But an ABC News-Washington Post poll released Wednesday showed that in a two-week period, the number seeing Palin positively dropped 6 percentage points while 10 points more see her unfavorably. On Monday, a CNN-Opinion Research poll showed her favorable rating dropping 4 points and her unfavorable rating rising eight points over two weeks.
