Wal-Mart Gets Marketing Help From 'Mommy Bloggers'

Wal-Mart is getting some help from "mommy bloggers," tasked with making videos on how they save money and live better.

The Washington Post reports that the “Elevenmoms” program launched this week (which actually involves 12 mom bloggers) aims to build traffic for Wal-Mart’s new YouTube channel.

One of the bloggers, Jessica Smith of JessicaKnows.com, who hails from Olney, MD, said Wal-Mart contacted her early this summer to participate. Smith didn’t get any money from Wal-Mart, but it did provide her with a video camera, a makeover and a photo shoot. The moms will also be headed out to Wal-Mart’s headquarters in Bentonville, AR, for a visit in October, she said.

"Moms are a huge purchasing force. And, they’re not in a corporate world, but if companies would realize that educated, professional moms have decided to stay home in some sort of capacity, then they could tap into that and leverage that and really reach out to those moms in an authentic and genuine way,” Smith told WUSA 9 News in the Washington area.

Wal-Mart will then try to build traffic to its YouTube channel by holding a contest for the best viewer-submitted video. The big prize is a year’s worth of groceries at the big-box store.

The 12 Wal-Mart mommy blogs are: GeekMommy’s WebLife, The Domestic Diva, Jessica Knows, MomAdvice, Classy Mommy, Deal Seeking Mom, Frugal Upstate, Keeping the Kingdom First, Coupon Cravings, The “Cent”sible Sawyer, From Dates to Diapers and Beingfrugal.net.

I’m sure my stay-at-home-dad husband will “love” it. Talk about equality - he’s really tired of being ignored.

Lorraine - I don’t think WalMart was trying to “ignore” him - and I’m fairly certain there’s no gender restriction on the contest. Tell your stay-at-home-dad husband that he rocks and he should enter the contest when it starts October 9th. A year’s worth of groceries doesn’t care what the gender of the stay-at-home parent is either! :)

Isn’t Wal-Mart the company that lost a class action suit for blatant discrimination with its female employees? This a transparent attempt to be Mommy’s friend, uh, just forget our history, okay? From above: “Moms are a huge purchasing force,” but not enough to be treated fairly in Wal-Mart’s work force. Hypocrisy. And a contest! Two tricks in one!

Just out of curiosity? How do you expect them to change if when they try you give them no chance to get better? I’m more than aware of the mistakes that WalMart has made in the past - yet willing to work with them because I honestly believe they are trying not only to change their image - but also their reality.

Who are you, one of their reps?

are you asking me kermie? b/c the answer is no - I’m one of the “moms” as I mentioned above… I don’t work for Walmart at all… but I am working *with* them in this campaign.
