Want to Be Sexier? Try Wearing Red

Sorry, fashionistas. When it comes to what color to wear to be sexier and more desirable to men, it’s red — not black — that does the trick.

New research published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology shows that the color red, relative to other achromatic and chromatic colors, enhances male’s attraction to females in nonhumans and humans alike.

Men may not even realize that red turns them on more than, say, blue, green or brown, and a woman in red may not necessarily be perceived as more likeable, kind or intelligent in the hue. But she’s definitely got more power in the va-va-va-voom department.

"The findings have clear practical implications for men and women in the mating game and, perhaps, for fashion consultants, product designers and marketers,” the journal states. “Furthermore, the findings document the value of extending research on signal coloration to humans and of considering color as something of a common language, both within and across species.”

Men also were more likely to say they wanted to have sex with a woman and that they would be willing to spend more on a date if she were in red.

"We think that red, due to the association with hearts and Valentine’s Day and lingerie and things like that, takes on a sexy meaning," Andrew Elliot, Ph.D., a professor of psychology at the University of Rochester in New York, told CNN. "There’s also a possibility — a rather provocative possibility — that there’s a deeply embedded sort of tendency for heterosexual men to see red as an attraction cue because that’s what happens in the wild."

I just think the color red is an advertisement of “I want to attract the opposite sex”. It’s an attention getter, and the idea, even subconscious; that the woman is advertising, turns men on. It’s the same with blonde hair. Except for the very young, most blondes dye their hair. And in doing so, there is a message given which, just like wearing the color red, advertises a desire for attention and a desire to attract the opposite sex, and therefore has that affect on men. This is my theory anyway.

Well, girls. Most of the dresses and skirt-suits that have gotten me the most compliments have been red or a black and red combination. A few years ago, at a Dinner-theatre event, the waitress-performer, asked me, where I got my shoes and my dress. It, “made my day.” (i.e.: evening.) We shall be married for 42 years this June. I’ve always taken the advice from the song, “Belly Up To The Bar, Boys.” It’s from Broadway”s, “Unsinkable Molly Brown.” The part of the song that I’ve taken heed to, goes, “never romance a woman in pants or a girl who wears a veil. ….” However at one party in Randolph, Massachusetts, several years ago, I did wear a bright, yellow, pick-me-up gown and was amazed at all the compliments that I received. It was a good thing that I remembered how to curtsy. However, I did tuck my streaked, blond hair into an Auburn color wig for that evening. We celebrated Saint Valentine’s Day Weekend on Sunday. I had to work Friday and Saturday evening. I used a white skirt and red blouse combination with my black patent-leathers. I never liked sandals (aka: strappy heels), even as a child. This is my first entry. I hope I wasn’t too, “long-winded.” I concur, Red Dresses, Red Skirts are the best …. for me. “Missy” Susan Pauline Bauer
