Red is the new black.

Today is National Wear Red Day, when millions of people across the United States wear red to remind everyone that heart disease is the No. 1 killer of women. Every minute, someone’s mother, daughter, wife or sister dies from heart disease and stroke in the country, according to the American Heart Association. Reducing these diseases must become a national priority.

So, to mark American Heart Month, wowOwow teamed up with renowned cardiologist Dr. Holly Andersen to provide daily tips on how to maintain a healthy heart.

I got an email on Thursday so I was lucky enough to wear read on Friday. I’m a teacher so it was nice to see many of my colleagues, and my daughter as well, wearing red in support.

I will wear my lovely red lipstick, as nothing in my wardrobe is red.

Why just one day? Why not everytime we wear red, we remember heart health. Or even on days when we wear blue.

Ms. Dee, what a great fun idea! And, I always wanted a reason to just wear a pair of red sunglasses or carry a red hobo bag. I never really wear red as it does nothing for my skin but accessories…yeah, I’ll go for that.

I was not aware of this and accidentally am wearing the reddest thing I own. I just woke up in a red kind of mood today. Lucky me!

Funny. I did dress in red today. It must have been subconscious.

At our school, the teachers, both women and some men wore red yesterday. It was great. The students kept asking why we were all in red, and it was so satisfying to be able to tell them that it was in support for women and reducing the risk of heart disease for women. That’s the way to get our young girls involved and knowledgable.

i had a heart attack ten years ago - i was 55. i feel that wearing red and women’s heart disease needs to get out there and be in your face the same way breast cancer is. thankfully i am okay - a few minor set backs, but women need to know more than they do. life is short enough without us being in the dark about heart disease.
