Welcome to wowOwow and Thank You!

Joni Evans

Welcome! We launched on March 8th, the 100th anniversary of International Women’s Day. And we’ve been so happy with your responses to our site and to our questions. (Our first Question of the Day – Which four women would you like to see on Mt. Rushmore? — has received more than 2,000 e-mails and 150 on-site comments. We will tally the votes on Friday, so you still have time to get yours in.)

WowOwow is a party — disguised as a website — where we meet for coffee (in our robes) and for cocktails (without any makeup) and even in the middle of the night (someone’s always up!). Here, we can talk to our readers, invite the most interesting guests, share experiences, tell tales out of school, exchange gossip and news — and make some of our own.

WowOwow is created, written and owned by Lesley Stahl, Peggy Noonan, Liz Smith, Joni Evans, Mary Wells, Sheila Nevins, Joan Juliet Buck, Whoopi Goldberg, Julia Reed, Joan Ganz Cooney, Judith Martin, Candice Bergen, Lily Tomlin, Jane Wagner and Marlo Thomas.

Here’s what you’ll see:

What we want is to hear from you. On every page is a comment box ("Talk to Us") for you to share your opinions, which will become an integral part of the site. Your reactions, ideas and recommendations are crucial to us. Tell us what you like, don’t like and what you want to see. Tell us everything.

You are our guests. So, sit down, put your feet up and talk to us.

I wish you all the luck in the world. This is a huge and time consuming endeavor however, I can’t help noticing that without the possible exception of Ms. Noonan you are all very wealthy New York liberals with a liberal agenda and a life style inside a bubble that few women have knowledge of or access to. I’d love to know how many husbands and children there are among you.

I’m glad to have just read about the site, coincidentally on the same day I was wondering to myself, “Why aren’t there more places online for smart women in my age group?” I’ll be watching with interest as the site grows and develops. So far, it’s looking quite impressive! I have to say, though, that there’s one thing I don’t care for. The “Star signs” stuff displayed so prominently; surely in this day and age we’re past superstitious nonsense like that? Astrology has been disproven so often that I can no more imagine taking it seriously than I can imagine consulting chicken entrails to see how my day will go. And to make it a leading feature on a site purportedly for intelligent women is really just insulting (that and “bad hair days”? Really? Is this Cosmo?) I know, I know: it’s most likely labeled “for entertainment purposes only” somewhere - but really, aren’t there more entertaining things we can all share in? I’d be disappointed to know that any of those inspiring, talented women pictured on the front page allows her personality to be summed up in a few clichéd phrases. Anyway, I do enjoy what I’ve seen of the site so far, and hope that maybe it’ll take a cue from other current sites and make the homepage customizable, so we have to option to add or remove what appeals to each of us personally.

Women, Ladies, Girls of all ages! I am psyched to be a part of this. Here’s my thought: How can we improve the image of women in the fashion world? Okay, I’m in my 60s so I never plan on wearing those heels but I fear for these young women’s feet in the future. And the clothes are so revealing. How can we expect to be taken seriously if we are dressed like we’re headed for bed or just got out of one and didn’t quite button up. Am I alone in my thinking? Talk to me. Whoopie, you are not taken by fashion which is refreshing but Barbara Walters wears those cockamamie shoes on THE VIEW. I was in the studio audience once and I watched her taking tiny, baby steps to get to her chair. She obviously couldn’t negotiate in the heels but she wore them for looks I guess. I’d like her to get real in the shoe department. Do you agree? Anybody out there?

The Cliterati, the Glitterati and the Chattering Class, all in one easy to find place - hooray! You’re all here - except, thankfully, the demonizers, like Coulter and Dowd. Since the demise of Lears, Mirabella, and the Hers column in the NYT, it’s not easy to find smart dames with something to say and a place to say it. Here’s looking at you!

Congratulations to all of you for starting this “website for the rest of us.” I’m thrilled to join the conversation.

Yes, congratulations. But you need an RSS feed, pronto.

This is one of the most exciting internet sites I’ve found! First, it doesn’t come at me from a particular political position and I appreciate that. When you register it doesn’t ask for your birthdate and automatically go to a year in the 80’s and I appreciate that! From Peggy Noonan to Lily Tomlin, from Liz Smith to Leslie Stahl I feel as though I can get my daily dose of intellegent yet witty information all in one place. I’m wondering if you plan to include favorite or featured blogs - because I have one I’d love to be considered. All the very best of luck to you ladies! Another frontier crossed and conquered. From one woman on the web (I’m at http://midlifesatrip.com) to the rest of you, what a wonderful new community! From the moment I saw the homepage, I truly felt at home. Thanks to the NYT for bringing wowOwow to my attention.

Over at MOMocrats (http://www.momocrats.com), we’re curious to see what slant this site will take on the upcoming election. Good luck on your launch! We’re also wanting to know where all our Asian, Latina, and African-American sisters are in your line-up (Whoopi notwithstanding).

It’s so wonderful to have found this site and the richness in it. I’d love to become a regular reader, which for me in my busy day means I rely on an RSS feed or some form of subscription to alert me when there’s new content on the site. I hope you’ll consider adding a feed…and I think it would mean a great deal more traffic and participation in the site in the long run.

will you be updating your site frequently? and will there be more interaction and more media—podcasts and such? i wish that your weather forecast did not perpetuate a stereotype of women who care about the weather only as it relates to their hair. i would have expected more of your group. how about the weather as it reflects global warming trends?

Great site - Thanks to all of you who’ve added your own slant. Question for y’all : What happened to our two female NYT op-ed columnists, Maureen Dowd and Gail Collins , formerly amusing, clever and insightful, now only snide? Is it just the anti-Clinton thing? or is more going on? Thanks to whomever has an answer, or a guess!

Apparently there are no Asian women on the world wide web (http://www.motherhooduncensored.net). Good to know. Thanks for representing, ladies.
