At This Historic Moment ... A wOw Reader Quote That Says It All

Comment to Women on the Web Forum: Hillary Announcement Watch at wowOwow on June 3

Stop a moment and think about this: a black man in the White House. When I voted for John Kennedy in my first vote for the presidency, the thought of a woman in the White House was so far in the future that few thought about it or even let the possibility into the mind. The same thing about a black man in the White House — unthinkable. Now, 40-plus years later we have both. I find that amazing and incredible and I’m so happy I lived to see this day. I don’t know about the rest of you but that makes my century. That gives me hope, finally, after 40 years of incompetents and snake-oil salesmen in the White House, that the impossible is coming true. That is so incredible that I am stunned and elated by it all. Finally.

TS - thank you for your response; I was upset at the time and I feared my meaning might get lost.

When I first heard of this site, it was on one of the best TV shows there is, Charlie Rose. He asked the founders if he could come on the site and it seemed to me the ladies said he could. I doubt they meant just Charlie Rose, as a man, could be here and no other men. Perhaps many gush over Frank because he is not only willing to traverse the geography of our thought processes, he likes women. Many of us have met darned few men who do get us. The thing is, yes, his words were chosen and I can see why some of the women would not like this. I will confess to a twinge of envy when MY words are not chosen as I always feel I’m brilliantly erudite and witty, but in the end, it doesn’t matter who says what, as long as it’s spot on and food for thought. I am old enough to remember being a member of a country club where as a female, I was not allowed to move about freely within the confines of the establishment without being accompanied by a father/spouse/brother or some other male member. Do we really want to segregate this site? Do we want to be as bad to men as some of them have been to us over the decades? Isn’t this site about establishing conversation and dialogue on a civil level to promote growth and advancement for all? If not, then even the young women here would have to leave if they are not over forty and one could argue that they need our words of wisdom and experience more than we need just to hang out with our own kind. And when you think about it, if more men could see how we are, be exposed to what we think and how we process information, wouldn’t that be for the good of all? I’m not slamming Mugsy or Roberta nor am I condemning those who adore Frank. I just think we need not to stand on one side, off by ourselves, not letting anyone else in. Besides, Frank seems nicely house trained and most likely he doesn’t leave the toilet seat up. LOL

i was just imagining what would happen if there were a website designed for men of a certain age, and a woman posted several times - I think it would be brutal.

Frank, I really appreciate what you say, keep saying it and “The Dude Abides - I take comfort in that.”

Whoa, a reference to “The Great Lebowsky” (did I get the title correct?); the dude does indeed abide!

Frank, I agree - it is amazing, incredible and heartening that as a nation we’ve finally progressed to this point and that an African American person has a terrific shot at being our next POTUS. There are so very many highly qualified, well educated African Americans of the utmost integrity. However my amazement is tempered when I wonder if this particular man, with his comparatively limited resumé, is the one to fill those shoes. Beyond the rhetoric, beyond the melanin … I still don’t get it.

Elizabeth, Frannie, Peg, Maurine, Deni, Lily, Totally Sassy, Zee, Josie and the rest of you wonderful women ( I’m know I forgotten many—please forgive) who’ve I’ve come to think of as good friends, whom I admire so much , who have taught me a great deal and have tolerated a man here on this site that should be only for women :-) I’m moving on. It’s time. I have no wish to upset anyone by my presence here and I apparently have. That I will not do. I’m well aware of the treatment that women go through at the hands of men and I will not exacerbate anyone’s feelings by my being here. I’ve been thinking of this for a few days now and I think this is best for everyone. ;-) So adieu, toute a l’heure and I shall see you in an other place—we , the human species used to be separated by 6 degrees of separation;now it’s only 1 degree: distance but distance has many forms and many definitions. And I’ve crossed a line I should never have done. Y’ all take care. Frank

Frank - I hope you will reconsider. I agree with Maurine, you never crossed a line. And I don’t think this site should ONLY be for women. If one contributes in a respectful way, which you always have done, why shouldn’t you be welcomed ?

Please take some space and reconsider this, Frank. I may be mistaken, but though this website targets women over 40, there is not a clause that says “and be gone if you don’t have boobs or aren’t at least in perimenopause.” And if it did, I would not be a part of it because that perpetuates the crazy exclusivity and separatist attitudes that I think all the “isms” are fed by. You have done no wrong, Frank. No line that I am aware of has been crossed. Rather, you have brought a voice of respect, appreciation and an honoring of women in your commentary and that has meant a great deal to so many that are members of this community. I really think that sexism is alive and well, and Mugsy is right, women have become desensitized to it, true. I don’t think that conquering sexism is going to involve a “girls club” to retalliate against the “boys club” that has been responsible for the atrocities (selected that word carefully) against women that have gone on for what seems an eternity and is still going strong. Actually the opposite. I think that will be accomplished by a club for “people” that practice harmlessness toward one another, show mutual respect, and live unified in harmony. Independent of whether they don a bra or jock strap. I encourage you to return to what I consider your welcome seat at the table of wowowow discussion. That to me, despite the sensitivities and upsets that are being worked through at that table, would reinforce your support of women in a strong and solid way. Besides…I already miss ya…:)

Frank, I do not think you have crossed any line. If you want to participate, do. If you don’t want to participate, do not. Or if you just want to dial back a little, your choice. Do not move on because you think you are causing a problem. The trick is not to take it personally, any of it. Especially when one part of the discussion is that maybe the Wowowow management may be selecting topics and contributors in an unbalanced way. [I have had enough of Monica Crowley for all of 2008.] Since your featured comment was a response to me in another thread, I feel bad that this had to be the place for this discussion to take place. For the substance of your comment was right on the money. This is definitely an historic time and it is amazing to participate/vote/comment/watch, all of it. But this type of discussion was coming, and I am sorry that your comment had to be the place for it to come up. In some threads where Dr. Klein has hijacked the thread to talk about his own misogyny instead of what the thread was about, people have responded to Klein in such a way that the main purpose of the thread got lost. Here, I think your comment just became a platform for a discussion about people’s expectations of this web site. Clearly, your participation is welcome. But sexism is a curious beast; it lives within women as well as within men. It is a set of attitudes and it is not always obvious to us that we may have shards of it stuck in our psyche. Steinem’s Revolution from Within was a great revelation to me. I know that the founders of Wowowow never intended to discriminate against men in their site; legally they could not do so. Still, this is a vulnerable time for many women who have worked for political power; the first viable woman candidate for the presidency is about to concede. If this site is to serve primarily women over 40, perhaps that means that here, men should play a supporting role, not a starring role. And that does not mean you should go away. But it may mean that threads about rich pedophiles are in questionable taste.

Day’s later, I am still reading this, trying to figure out what the heck went wrong. I read Gloria Steinem’s Revolution from Within, also, ages ago, and saw her speak when I was working at Cooper Union, around 1992. (Cooper Union was where Lincoln made his historic speech before becoming president.) There were many men in the audience with intelligent, meaningful questions. They were part of the whole experience and made it more meaningful. I still have a tape I bought at that event of her speaking and the Q and A afterward. What I took away from that night was a sense of unity as human beings. What happens the next time a man makes a quote-worthy remark? Are we to ignore him because of gender? Isn’t that what we are fighting against and have experienced our whole lives? I believe we should live what we believe, nothing less.
