At This Historic Moment ... A wOw Reader Quote That Says It All

Comment to Women on the Web Forum: Hillary Announcement Watch at wowOwow on June 3

Frank Peterson - 6/3/2008 5:09 PM

Stop a moment and think about this: a black man in the White House. When I voted for John Kennedy in my first vote for the presidency, the thought of a woman in the White House was so far in the future that few thought about it or even let the possibility into the mind. The same thing about a black man in the White House — unthinkable. Now, 40-plus years later we have both. I find that amazing and incredible and I’m so happy I lived to see this day. I don’t know about the rest of you but that makes my century. That gives me hope, finally, after 40 years of incompetents and snake-oil salesmen in the White House, that the impossible is coming true. That is so incredible that I am stunned and elated by it all. Finally.

Okay, Mugsy, I will accept your chastisement for the incorrect phrasing of what Dr. Klein does. You are quite right, hate-speak is never amusing and you are right that if it were translated into racial terms, I’d be the first one freaking out. Perhaps it would be best if I said I think men who feel that way about us are beyond being absurd and I don’t give them an ounce of my credit or time. It rolls off my back because I know - and I do mean KNOW - he is wrong. I haven’t noticed that this site has an administrator or moderator who steps in and tells people posting what is appropriate or not the way many of the sites I visit do. If they are here, I’ve not seen signs of anybody stepping in so that leaves us on the honor system. I can tell how important this is to you and in no way do I mean to blow you off or demean your strongly held opinion. But until the site decides how they plan to moderate things, I choose to consider the source when I see he has posted. He reminds me of the men in my family and I guess I have developed a hide like a rhinoceros but I am sensitive to the fact many others do not have that hide. I cannot control what anybody posts here nor do I want to. But let me ask you this - I am assuming you have contacted the founders here and told them of your opinions - what have they replied or have they? I am curious. Again, if I offended you with my rather flippant phrasing, I do apologize as it was not my intent. And since we don’t know each other and I can’t see your face when we’re typing to correctly gauge your intent, I would have to ask that you give me the benefit of the doubt. I am an intelligent, thoughtful, concerned person who has not denigrated anyone purposefully or with intent and I’m deserving of respect as much as you or anyone else here.

I’m fine with you, M.L. In fact, I always look for your posts. Probably why I was surprised at that. I worked for years in employment law, and have a very clear vision and rather precise guidelines for hate-speak; they are based on the law as well as common decency and common sense; and I believe very firmly (since even water understands the meaning of the words spoken to it) that we need to be careful about hate-speak.

Mugsy, I can appear to be flippant at times, I know this, especially when dealing with misogynists. I had to learn as a wee girl to deflect it away from me with my little Wonder Woman bracelets in order to survive. So, once you phrased it in terms of translating it into racial hate-speak, well, let us say, I had that proverbial egg on my face. Still, I am sincerely curious if anybody has spoken to the powers that be here and asked them about this matter. Will there be a moderator to step in, spanking those of us who misbehave and sending us to our rooms? I’m only partially kidding. I just keep wondering if you’ve heard back from the founders. I think I log in here daily not only to see what you all have on your minds but to see if any parameters have been set by the founders. Have a good weekend if I don’t bump into you in these cyber halls before then!

M L - yours is one of the sanest most mature posts I’ve read in the past 24 hours. Thank you for sorting out the important things.

You women astonish me—totally—I don’t know what to say—how can I respond to such generosity of spirit. My god, I’m overwhelmed. You humble me. I thought only Anne understood me. I need time to think —a few days—I’ve posted about Bobbie Kennedy—I had to. What he meant to my generation. Let me think.

Hi Frank … I posted this to you some where earlier in the thread before seeing your latest post: Frank - I apologize that you felt slighted by my flippant comment about ‘sulking’ … was certainly not my intention to be hurtful, very sorry. Honestly after re-reading this entire thread (yikes), I still don’t understand: everyone congratulated you on your post(s) and your presence on wow, then everyone told you how nice it would be if you stayed around - nobody attacked you, your writing, your ideas … yet you decided you were not welcome and firmly decided to leave … I called that sulking … Sorry again. The thread of discussion moved into a different direction, nothing wrong with that … after all the congratulations, the discussion went off into the editorial choices of this web-site, which had nothing to do with you, everyone pointed that out too … maybe it wasn’t the right place to address these other topics - but currently there is no other thread regarding the overall aspects of the wow site … so it seemed alright to point out editorial choices in this area, where the editors had picked a reader’s comment as a guest feature (first time? I wouldn’t know, have only checked in sporadically)

This is truly unbelievable! Frank writes an optimistic post about a most momentous time in American History and you, Mugsy, have to “rain on his parade”. What’s “to get”? I guess I don’t “get it” either, and I’m a WOMAN. I thought the whole idea was for ENLIGHTENED and INTELLIGENT people to TRANSCEND race and gender. All of us are SOMETHING-a man, a woman, black, asian, white, etc. etc.—we can’t, everyone of us be ALL THINGS. So to understand one another we have to be the SAME? I’m Chinese, I don’t expect anyone to understand what that’s like to ME, even another Chinese person might not understand. Not all “women over 40” think alike either—obviously. Maybe this site was intended for women over 40, but are we that intolerant that we can’t accept anyone who wants to contribute. And besides, how can you not love Frank?

Eleanor……..I agree — Frank is definitely to be loved and admired. I’d like for him to stay and give us the “male” side of the story. So maybe I should write a love note to frank — from Khalil Gibran — “Love knows not its own depth until the hour of separation”.

Lady Gator, Frank aside as a person, we don’t need anyone to give us the “male” side of the story. The entire world gives us the “male” side of the story 24-7. Eleanor rants at me personally and that’s fine, she can do that, and I really don’t care what she says or does. But in terms of balance, this is one of the very very few times that women over 40 have ever been given the opportunity to speak for themselves, and this is our time and our space. The web is full of sites for men, and for people. It is not full of sites for women to speak for themselves. Mostly we are spoke “at.” Frank and I are fine.

Ms. Roche, Some on this site come off “superior” and others can come off as “perfumy” and many come off “eggheaded” and I come off as “needy” and the rest represent all the wonderful things in between. I am most delighted to see my family on wow talking this evening … :) Now, about sexism, elitism and race … oh, my! BETA … what a word!

dear Liza D.o8…Beta - you are prizeless … had my own little summary / categories of what kind of people roam these pages, but I’ll stick with your fab words … yours, a non-superior egghead perfumed and needy like everyone here …

I don’t remember the people of this land rallying like this since the 60’s and Martin Luther King. A sense of believing freedom and voice being restored again. If Hillary’s support unites with Barack’s, the bulldozer towards Washington will be unyielding to being blocked. After the last many years, it is almost like our own invisible Berlin wall coming down in Washington. And may those behind that wall now, that have ruled in secrecy see justice. It still is boggling for me to see Karl Rove as a source on fox news, rather than serving the sentence that he was given. The history of this time, will not be as we have known it, but truth will prevail in the future. There is so much that has not made sense. Maybe even the “dead” will be found walking also, such as Ken Lay. Between secret prisons, those being illegally detained. People picked up off of streets, it is not a stretch to imagine that the secrecy could go much further. Thank god America is back on the road to democracy again. Linda

Frank, Hi, it is sister Liza here. How is it going Frank? I am amazed at your resilience. One lesson in life that I have learned the hard way is …. always leave on a high note. And only I have control of the ultimate choice. Bobby Kennedy … democracy and the death of it … doors opening only to be slammed shut dead in our pretty little faces.

You portrayed issues of low self-esteem to get attention, Liza, Karin and whomever else you pose as? That’s unfortunate but I’ll take the lesson with me…
