Who Gives a ____ What 'Joe the Plumber' Thinks?!

Editor’s Note: A longtime journalist, Margo Howard went into the family business (her mother was the fabled Ann Landers) in the 1990s as Dear Prudence. Her broad experience and understanding of human nature provide answers for the troubled — and entertainment for everyone else. Click here to read her column on Yahoo!

A BIG Drudge headline blared the following: JOE THE PLUMBERSCARED FOR AMERICAIF OBAMA PRESIDENT.

Well, who gives a rat’s ass about what this man thinks? And what’s wrong with Drudge that he gives credence to this schmo? Is he our new expert on the body politic?

I, frankly, don’t give a damn about his opinion – for a lot of reasons. First of all, his name isn’t even "Joe;" he’s not a licensed plumber; he lied about belonging to a union; and he had no intention of buying a business that would earn him $250,000 a year. And assuming his name were Joe, that he had a plumber’s license, that he did belong to the union, and was actually considering buying a business that would earn him a quarter of a mil a year, I still wouldn’t place him in the category of people whose opinion merited ink. (And don’t you think that a guy who had been discredited in everything he said would be consigned to the rubbish bin of media-worthy bloviaters? Guess not.)

And secondly, that kind of "man on the street" crap is demeaning. It reminds me of how we used to refer to our Lab as "Alice the dog." It is, furthermore, condescending to refer to people with only a first name followed by their job description — especially so when done by a senator, or anyone in a superior position. Have you heard of anyone referring to President Bush as "George, the government guy?"

As for this clown making headlines on Drudge, it is ludicrous. I doubt that he even speaks for the odiously named Joe Six-pack. This is just one more example of the intellectual cleansing we have somehow been subjected to. Shape up, Matt Drudge, and find some more authoritative sources. And "Joe," go back to fixing toilets.

Does anyone remember a segment Steve Allen always had on his program called “The Man in the Street” interview? It was very funny and corny at the same time. Re: plumbers. I happen to revere them as I do electricians, carpenters, doctors, dentists and any one of these skilled persons who FIX things that need fixing. This man that has been bandied about strikes me as a charlatan ––––it’s a damn shame that he now has so much fame. And to think HE thinks he can become a congressmen is ludicrous––––––although with some of the folks we have representing us perhaps not so far fetched. What pronking nerve!

Hi Phyllis….yes, I remember…I can hear Steve Allen’s wonderful laugh now…was thinking about him during the Edie Adams reminiscences…Did you see Rocky’s interesting list….websters, fishers, cartwrights, etc….Is there a “name” for “names” like that? One or more times here, someone has taken issue about candidates speaking about the “right” to a college education….I know what they are saying but think that “higher education” is more inclusive and, hence, more appropriate…..There are young people in my bailiwick who ridicule anyone with a college education….scathing comments about “book smarts”, etc… Now of course I don’t like to hear that, but these kids don’t get any re-inforcement for their tech school accomplishment..or learning their craft from a master….and many moms, dads, grandparents see their own long-running productive apprenticeships to “life its ownself” as somehow “less than”…… It hurts my heart. I would hope that the Obama youth-speak folks might make a few subtle changes in that language ….I think it would automatically raise the self-esteem quotient in these underappreciated folks….

IMO, craft and service apprenticeships are wonderful ideas, Georgia. And many do that now. But not nearly enough. I’ve always thought it a fine way for all young people to “channel” their energies and learn what good hard work, the creative/productive spirit, and the idea of work ethic are all about. I’d recommend the practice as a college prerequisite.

Georgia — Did a quick Google on your question. Here’s what I found — aptonym — but so far have not found another site that concurs. Let me know what you find, won’t you? According to linguist Frank Nuessel (see The Study of Names), an aptonym is the term used for “people whose names and occupations or situations (e.g., workplace) have a close correspondence.” — http://homepage.mac.com/chapmandave/aptonyms/index2.html#wiaa

Dear RR…Thank you so much for that link….especially because, in my book, “quick Google” is oxymoronic…I saw enough to know to bookmark and file it under “Snow Day/Cabin Fever Activities”….Likewise the wordsmith link below ….Aptonyms are a nifty concept but not exactly what we were asking…Somebody down the rabbit hole will know..betcha, betcha…. Had to go see Click and Clack, the Tappet Brothers from NPR….They have those goofily apt pseudonyms they list in their credits…like Natalie Attird, the wardrobe lady, and their legal department..Boyd, Dewey, Cheatam and Howe…. I actually had an OB/GYN named Dr. Hymen…and my childhood pediatricians were Dr. Cost and Dr. Paine…Not kidding…. Then there’s my law firm…Fred Atcher, Rodney Beck and Herman Kohl……and their arch-rivals…Henry Tripp, Grover Stumbo, and Martin Faugh…..I can just hear Tiffany-Whitney-Courtney-Brittany answering those phones…..(“Good Morning…..”)

Same thing, Georgia. Check out the following sites: http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/aptonym “Cutter & Sons, Butchers” and “Dr. Childer, Paediatrician” are examples of aptonyms. http://humor.about.com/od/reallife/p/ds092104.htm The Doctors’ Names List and Other Punny Aptonyms http://housingdoom.com/2008/10/06/the-mother-of-all-aptonyms/ The mother of all aptonyms: Treasury confirms Kashkari to head mortgage rescue plan

Oh Lordy…. Lemme Up, I’ve Had Enough! (A left-leaning compliment…thanks, RR) Don’t let James Gemmell get wind o’ these…..He’s a gifted amateur punster who might easily achieve professional status if given the least bit of encouragement….

The Republican campaign will go down in the record books, and hopefully be taught as a required course at colleges, about what not to do to win friends and influence… (fill in the blank). The world certainly is no longer convinced that the U.S.A. isn’t all in the “me” party.

Dear Mary - I’m also in Florida - very Republican northeast Florida - and I’m so anxious about this election. There have already been reports of faulty equipment at the early voting sites in my county, leaving the lines of early voters waiting until they either corrected or replaced the machines. The good news, as of the end of last week, was that 19% of registered voters in my county had either taken the opportunity to use one of the early voting venues, or had voted by absentee ballot (which I did last week). I am further encouraged that there has been an unprecedented number of new voter registrations, which have been overwhelmingly Democratic. Despite all of this, I’m losing sleep over this election, because I have seen what the Republicans can do in this state to alter election results. My god, we had another former beauty queen, Kathryn Harris, decide who was going to be president in 2000! This is the first presidential election year that Florida might actually go Democrat, at least in my voting history. (My father voted for Kennedy, when it was so unpopular in his circle, and I drove my mother and grandmother to the polIs, the first time I could vote, to cast what was probably the only votes in our county for McGovern. My dad couldn’t make himself vote for either McGovern, and most defintely not Nixon.) I think we, as Floridians, owe our support to Obama and the Democrats after we offered up the worst president in any of our memories. Despite my conservative environs, I have heard more stories about McCain in recent months and his arrogant, abusive, womanizing ways - he was stationed here after his POW experience - and those remarks were from very conservative, always Republican, neighbors who stated that they would never, in good conscience, vote for him. Total lack of integrity. Easy choice, I think.

Joanne, “Floridians” didn’t offer up the worst president. We were just the last large electorate state to count and many of us got it right. If you can help get out the vote and help people get to the polls go to this website and give them your name. Good luck in Jacksonville. www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/06/09/john-mccains-first-wife-s_n_106021.htm… Oh yes… your neighbors are right about Senator McCain. Integrity is more than military service. Carol McCain was well thought of in Washington. For the last article I know of, check out the Huffington Post June 2008. Thanks

Brava! I couldn’t agree more Ms Howard! Thanks, you just made my day! (funny, how sometimes it doesn’t take much to get us to smile, eh?) Thanks again.
