Whoopi Goldberg: Obama's Great, But the Next Two Years Are Going to Be Tough

We’re on the road to something brand-new, and hopefully it will be better than where we are, right this moment
Whoopi Goldberg

Well, we’re on the eve of the Inaugural.

Millions of people, they say, are going to be watching Barack Obama sworn in as the first black president of the United States of America. To say that I am out of my mind with delight would be an understatement. To say that I am out of my mind with delight that I am not going would not. Lots of people are going to be going to this thing, because people want to see it — they want to be there for history. But I’ve discovered something about myself and this new age that we live in: I’m quite content to watch history happen on the television.

Why, you might ask, is that my decision? Well, first of all, I started thinking about being surrounded by millions and millions of people all trying to see the teeny-weenie little dot up on the platform that is Barack. So I figure, “OK, can I handle millions and millions of people?” Yes, I could do that, but in the event that you have to go to the bathroom or that some strange flip-flop happened in your stomach because you were too tense — well that got me thinking: How would I get through all those people to go the loo?

Now, I’m not going to be sitting with the VIPs because I’m just an IP — not a VIP, just an IP — and I realized that I would be in the middle of all of that, unable to drive in any direction I chose. And if, for whatever reason, there was a moment of panic on my part, I would not be able to move. So I thought better to sit at home and not have to look like an IP, not have to think about how I will get to one of the many port-a-potties that will be there. Just the basic stuff.

Forget all the amazement, the idea that, for the first time in history, in the history of our country, someone who wasn’t a Caucasian man was going to be president of the United States. Do I think that’s a great thing? Yes, of course. But boy, does he have his work cut out for him! I listened to a lot of people talk about all the reasons that some of the decisions he’s making are wrong, and I thought, “Well, if they were wrong, why didn’t anybody start to correct the problems as they happened?” Surely all those Republican and Democratic senators who were sitting for the last eight years saw what was coming, and maybe they were all so brilliant that they couldn’t figure out how to articulate the problems at hand. But now, since we have a new guy coming in, it seems everyone has the information.

Let’s take a look at the economic picture. I’ve talked to a couple of great folks that I know who said, “You know, the only way we’re going to be able to move forward, is taking and creating a gazillion dollars to put into our system of government right now, and the government has to take care of this. The government has to bail out business because business is so far down and so far out of control that it cannot right itself. So government has to step in and go, ‘This is how we’re doing it. This is what you’re going to get. This is the situation we’re going to take hold of piece by piece.’”

if you really, sincerely are having a problem doing business, I suggest you contact your elected officials and explain them. You can also, politely, write to your new President perhaps he can help you

Dear Mr. Duck: I find what you have to say to have some merit, and all of it is interesting. But by using all caps, everything you write looks hostile and disrespectful of the other readers, even those who agree with some of your points. I’ve been a lurker for awhile, and wish you would calmly make your case without the bold face. We could then engage in an interesting debate. Thank you.

To Your Battle Stations, Conservatives by David Limbaugh The best long-term solutions for our ailing economy are to restore market forces in every possible sector, reduce the crippling tax burden, and restore responsible fiscal practices to the federal government. Sadly, the incoming Obama administration plans on moving in the opposite direction in all these areas and believes it has a mandate to do so. Are conservatives asleep or just worn down? Too many Americans have succumbed to the propaganda that the market is inherently evil and fraught with excesses fueled by “capitalistic greed” and that such systemic corruption has led to our economic woes. Only large-scale government intervention can rescue us from this pernicious system. Under Democratic and Republican administrations alike, we have advanced ever more rapidly away from a free market environment and toward a command and control economy. Steadily we have accepted the notion that politicians should pick winners and losers based on their ideas of fairness rather than having market forces be the ultimate arbiter. We have swallowed the fearmongering admonitions of public officials who insist that even apart from the moral question of picking winners and losers, our government must bail out “essential” segments of the economy, such as the automobile industry, lest the entire economy be doomed for extinction. Indeed, this word “essential” has proved to be an essential tool for the left in these difficult times. True conservatives out there — however many remain — must not forget the ominous words of Obama’s chief of staff, Rahm Emanuel, who said: “Rule one: Never allow a crisis to go to waste. They are opportunities to do big things.” Perhaps this statement was not as sexy for sound bite purposes as Obama’s cavalier remark to Joe the Plumber that we need to spread the wealth around a little bit. But it is even more revealing. Sure, much has been stated about Emanuel’s comment, but not nearly enough. For in all the media-generated excitement over Obama’s pecs and the faux conservative approval of Obama’s “moderate” appointments, it appears we have failed to grasp the significance of this revelation. If we’d take a breath and view this soberly, we’d see that Emanuel’s remark is evidence that liberals are now coming out of the closet. They’ll no doubt still eschew the liberal label, but they’ll unapologetically embrace liberal policies in a way they wouldn’t have before. Emanuel — on Obama’s behalf, by the way — might as well have stated: “We liberals are not the least bit concerned about the economy, not because it isn’t every bit as bad as you’ve heard, but precisely because we believe it is. You see, we finally have a chance to implement our ideas on a grand scale. We’ve helped brew the perfect storm by imposing policies that largely led to the mortgage meltdown and scapegoating corporations for them, thereby demonizing and discrediting the free market to the point that full-blown government solutions are now plausible rather than political suicide. We are not sorry for our current predicament, but elated about it. In our view, the ends always justify the means, so what’s a little widespread economic hardship en route to our grand vision for an America where we are in power and we get to pick winners and losers? And by the way, all that stuff we said about the growing deficits and national debt under Republican administrations was important, but not in the way you think. It was important for us to get elected, but now that we have been, we can be honest and tell you that a growing debt is just another necessary means to the end of expanding government power. We are giddy about the reported $1 trillion deficit because it gives us a license for more of the same — and then some. Next stop, nationalized health care.” I respectfully suggest that those sanguine “conservatives” who believe Obama’s “moderate” appointments are cause for comfort are fooling themselves. You’ll see how relatively irrelevant some of these appointments are when Obama presses forward with his “stimulus package” (an enormous set of earmarks that are being sold under cover of eliminating earmarks), redistributes wealth under the guise of tax cuts, and signs America on to a sovereignty- and economy-destroying cap and trade program in homage to the global warming myth. But as egregious as those policies are, they’ll pale next to his push for socialized medicine, which, if realized, could irreversibly change the American economy, not to mention destroy the quality of health care. Boy, is it ever time for the loyal opposition to rear its head. The way things are going, Obama’s agenda will be nearing the end zone before the defense suits up for the game. Now is the time for all good conservatives to quit trying to be loved by the liberal media and come to the aid of their country.

Very nice cutting and pasting, Duck. But if rallying great numbers of conservatives is your goal, you’re doing it on the wrong blog. The medium is the message, bud.

Just as I thought, you are one of those conservaties who cannot think for yourself, but are led by your gods of conservatism, Limbaugh, Hannity - more. I know a lot like you who begin conversations with ‘Rush says,” and then spout off some propaganda designed to make you hate. It’s too bad when there are so many who want failure, and substitute hate for hope. Why can’t we politely agreee to disagree and all work together for the good of the nation. We are splitting at the seams and will fall apart if this is allowed to continue. I do believe that there are a lot who would like that to happen regardless of the consequences

Whoopi,Whoopi! I am so happy, that you sit on Top of ANN yeaterday. It is people like her that the world is so far back in the dark ages, I feel it this …. I do not know if I want to refer to a girl or lady, had her way, we would be out there, picking cotten still. As anyone can see or if they can read, there is really more whites in jail than blacks, but they are kept hidden, why don’t she take a look at what is happening in her own race before she put any thing in writing, I’m sure her book will sell, but the ones that will by it, will be like mines as she.

Whoopie I always admire you, since those first years in Brooklyn and Manhattan as a stand up comic, you remind me of my great Aunt Ruby….a realist with vision, hope and understanding. However I also believe the capability of our brother president Obama; but, it is the system here that is the question…if the citizens do not monitor and punish the guilty, it remains a joke…on US. The rich walk away and people sleep in cars with no gas, yes, it will be tough for a long time especially if “Change” is only a word with no action. Peace and Joy….
