Whoopi Goldberg: Obama's Great, But the Next Two Years Are Going to Be Tough

We’re on the road to something brand-new, and hopefully it will be better than where we are, right this moment
Whoopi Goldberg

Well, we’re on the eve of the Inaugural.

Millions of people, they say, are going to be watching Barack Obama sworn in as the first black president of the United States of America. To say that I am out of my mind with delight would be an understatement. To say that I am out of my mind with delight that I am not going would not. Lots of people are going to be going to this thing, because people want to see it — they want to be there for history. But I’ve discovered something about myself and this new age that we live in: I’m quite content to watch history happen on the television.

Why, you might ask, is that my decision? Well, first of all, I started thinking about being surrounded by millions and millions of people all trying to see the teeny-weenie little dot up on the platform that is Barack. So I figure, “OK, can I handle millions and millions of people?” Yes, I could do that, but in the event that you have to go to the bathroom or that some strange flip-flop happened in your stomach because you were too tense — well that got me thinking: How would I get through all those people to go the loo?

Now, I’m not going to be sitting with the VIPs because I’m just an IP — not a VIP, just an IP — and I realized that I would be in the middle of all of that, unable to drive in any direction I chose. And if, for whatever reason, there was a moment of panic on my part, I would not be able to move. So I thought better to sit at home and not have to look like an IP, not have to think about how I will get to one of the many port-a-potties that will be there. Just the basic stuff.

Forget all the amazement, the idea that, for the first time in history, in the history of our country, someone who wasn’t a Caucasian man was going to be president of the United States. Do I think that’s a great thing? Yes, of course. But boy, does he have his work cut out for him! I listened to a lot of people talk about all the reasons that some of the decisions he’s making are wrong, and I thought, “Well, if they were wrong, why didn’t anybody start to correct the problems as they happened?” Surely all those Republican and Democratic senators who were sitting for the last eight years saw what was coming, and maybe they were all so brilliant that they couldn’t figure out how to articulate the problems at hand. But now, since we have a new guy coming in, it seems everyone has the information.

Let’s take a look at the economic picture. I’ve talked to a couple of great folks that I know who said, “You know, the only way we’re going to be able to move forward, is taking and creating a gazillion dollars to put into our system of government right now, and the government has to take care of this. The government has to bail out business because business is so far down and so far out of control that it cannot right itself. So government has to step in and go, ‘This is how we’re doing it. This is what you’re going to get. This is the situation we’re going to take hold of piece by piece.’”

I think Ann C’s comment about single Mother’s is unfair. My Mother raised 4 of us with no help from my father monetary or otherwise. She also went back to school part time to earn her Masters degree while working full time. Every one of us went to college and we are all responsible, contributing members of society. Lumping all single Mothers together is wrong, they are not all the same. Where does she get her info from? Thanks for defending Single Mom’s Whoopi. Luv ya.

I am not an AC fan, however, I believe her research on single mothers raising children concentrated on the inner cities…those single moms who have a baby every year by a different father to give themselves a pay increase. I live near DC so it is quite noticeable the large number of women with this upbringing and mentality. I would like to balance that statement with I also observe just the opposite and the numbers are rising. That being said, I know plenty of single moms who are stellar…great mothers, hard working focused women, young and old, who go on to raise amazing children who are expected to go to college. I honestly don’t think AC was generalizing….I believe she pulled her numbers from specific areas. And, within these boundaries you can further research to support a high incidence of young men and women in jail (crime, drugs, no education, gangs, etc.) or dead. I find it very hard to watch The View because I have no respect for the hosts. Each of them have problems. The biggest problem they have is that they have zero interviewing skills. Barbara Walters may have been good in her day but all you need do is listen to her for a few minutes and you know she should’ve retired years ago. She is out of touch. Joyce Beher is, quite frankly, a loud mouth stand up comic who is so unpolished it hurts to listen to her ranting and raving about Bush. Sherri Shepard merely occupies a chair. Whoopi, of course, is an accomplished actor but has no business on The View. She would be better suited on Hollywood Squares where she is better able to get a laugh or two. And, now I get to Elisabeth who just might be the most hated person by her peers and co-hosts because she is a republican…and, unfortunately, not a well informed republican. Yesterday, AC was asked to be on The View as a guest. Never before have I witnessed a guest being verbally and viciously attacked the way she was yesterday. She was treated like no other guest they’ve had on the show. True, they don’t like what she says or writes and they don’t have to agree with her. However, Whoopi, Joy and Sherri should be ashamed of themselves for demonstrating low class behavior towards their guest. Classless individuals representing women’s views….it doesn’t get any worse.

AC attacks constantly, she should be able to take it. But she doesn’t. She expects to be able to spew out her hate and put down women for having children and not staying with their husbands, no matter what. You are so right “Classless individuals representing women’s views… it doesn’t get any worse”

She’s like the bratty child throwing a fit to get attention….a sad, icky, delusion and non-contributing individual.

I hope, it’s not too much to do for barack obama. I don’t want to see that he has to disappoint the folks in the u.s. and then the rest of the world. He seems to be so inspired and the most of us put in his work so much hope, that I’m afraid, he’s unable to make us all happy. Because sometime all the magic is away and we maybe have to face a reality, which we don’t want to see.

Hi Deber, I am not an AC fan either, and yes, that was a bit scary when she basically got jumped on, but in a way she brings these attitudes on herself with some of her generalized comments. I realize she did not get a chance to explain herself but maybe she should explain herself, THEN make the comments. lol She has said quite a few things without explaining her reasons but I guess that is just who she is, she can’t get upset if people are itching to confront her. The single mothers you described above having baby after baby and not caring how they grow up do deserve that comment I guess, but it seemed like a genral comment to me and that is why I thought it unfair. The View is entertainment, I don’t expect it to be like a news show, not that they (News shows) are much better at stating the facts. These are views from different women with different ideals. Look in any office around the country and you will find personalities and ideals that clash, they just don’t do it on air. :o) I like all of them for different reasons and when the talk is not about politics they seem to genuinely like each other, Barbara and Whoopi have been favorites of mine for years. To each her own. Thanks for responding and helping me understand the comment that irked me.

Hi Heidi, Thanks for responding to my post. Your thoughts were good. Actually, the point I was trying to make about AC being immediately attacked by Whoopi (because Whoopi was a single mother and sensitive to the subject) wasn’t about the topic. When a show asks a guest to be on….they should allowed to be the guest. That opportunity was always given to everyone else but not AC. It was embarrassing to watch. I lost a lot of respect for The View yesterday. It immediately became “personal” and not professional. I guess we cannot expect anything other than that since all of them lack interviewing skills. I like to think that I’m a middle of the road, fair person. I enjoy hearing both sides of an argument. Who knows? Perhaps I can learn something new which is always of interest to me. There were people watching The View who didn’t know anything about AC. I’m one of them. We weren’t given the opportunity. Whoopi took that away from her audience as well as Joy and Sherri. Guest….Host….Audience….Different point of views. Something went terribly wrong yesterday. I have tried and tried to find value in each of them and I keep coming up short. Granted they are not a news show but I expect them to be professionals as “hosts.” AC can exercise her freedom of speech. From what I understand, she is a very intelligent woman, however, extremely unliked by the liberals and some conservatives. I would like to respond to my comments regarding single mothers. I did say that I know quite a few single mothers who have built stellar lives for their families. I admire these women more than I can express. When one doesn’t live in a large city one is isolated from the huge numbers of young women who were brought up “on the system” only to repeat it. This is not a racial observation as I think it affects all races and perhaps people who are here illegally. I was curious to learn of the demographics she used. Thanks again for responding. I’m sorry if you were irked by my comments. I’m merely expressing my personal opinions.

1. Ann Coulter wanted to get jumped on. It gets the morons to the book stores. DONALD DUCK IS PROBABLY AT THE BOOK STORE RIGHT NOW BUYING COPIES OF THE BOOK TO SEND TO HIS OTHER MORONIC FRIENDS!!!!!! 2. As a single mother and as a woman who worked with the children of other single mothers, the data , proably, isn’t far off. Kids from single parent homes do, to a large extent, have a rougher row to hoe. 3. What Coulter didn’t look at(because to do so would have not worked with her agenda ) was what causes these discrepancies. 4. Without even giving it two seconds of thought , I can come up with a few: fathers who walk away and disavow any responsibility, the mothers who are left to raise the children make significantly less money for the same jobs done than their male counterparts; young single mothers get very little support in the area of obtaining advanced education and training in order that they can qualify for better paying jobs and , thus, provide a more secure environment for their children, schools , quite often, arrange parent conferences and such without regard to the mothers’ schedules so that , in order to get to the school to find out how the child is doing, the mother has to take off (lose money and possibly the job itself) work to get to the meetings, the lack of available , good quality day care in order that the children do not end up latch key children at risk for getting into trouble in those hours between school being out and the parent returning home 5. It’s far, far easier, as those who label themselves ‘conservatives’ have taught us to blame the victim than it is to provide credible, workable solutions.

I don’t like Ann Coulter. I don’t like her because of the evil and vile words she relishes in spewing. However the big question is, are there any truths in what she has to say? Yes. And that is the other reason why I don’t like her. It is the equivalent of Hitler stating something about my race that is true. The words are on point, but the man is flawed. Coulter and her new book and negativity brought to mind a stand up act by Chris Rock that is hilarious, disturbing and true. Every single word of it. He dared to say what a majority of Black Americans truly believe. It is something that “we” believe, see and get. But there is a segment of Black Americans that aren’t Black American’s. Chris refers to them as Nigg__s. I hate that word and like Chris, I hate them. It is getting harder and harder to defend the actions of these people. But when a White person such as Coulter espouses the same beliefs and ideology it takes on a different slant. I invite you to listen and watch a part of my culture and our true beliefs. The trouble you will each be left with is being able to differentiate between a true Black person and a Nigg__. Warning, excessive strong language and the N-word. http://www.eatlime.com/video/Chris-Rock—Black-People/s7b2oCYgfik

Belinda, I really like you. Having lived my life in Memphis, TN, I think that I have a slanted view of race issues. Memphis will never recover from being the site of MLK’s assassination. The poverty here is overwhelming and almost impossible to escape. It seems that whites here in Memphis are either raging bigots or crippled with white guilt. Ann Coulter seems to have no insight to poverty… the root issue of the problem she is discussing. I understand why hearing those words from her is disconcerting. I really wish she would just disappear off the face of the earth and take Rush Limbaugh and other hate spreaders with her. (when I was a child I knew it was wrong to wish someone dead, so I just wished that Aliens would take them away in a spaceship) Next Tuesday we begin anew in many ways. From all that I have read and heard, I believe that PE Obama has a deeper understanding of race and poverty than I have ever seen in a politician. I am greatly encouraged.

Belinda, I’m not fond of her either. I honestly don’t think it serves any good purpose to go after single moms. I do, however, believe she wanted to connect single moms with crime. A much more important research topic might be dads who aren’t paying child support. I couldn’t bring myself to watch your link….what I don’t know won’t hurt me!
