Whoopi Goldberg: Obama's Great, But the Next Two Years Are Going to Be Tough

We’re on the road to something brand-new, and hopefully it will be better than where we are, right this moment
Whoopi Goldberg

Well, we’re on the eve of the Inaugural.

Millions of people, they say, are going to be watching Barack Obama sworn in as the first black president of the United States of America. To say that I am out of my mind with delight would be an understatement. To say that I am out of my mind with delight that I am not going would not. Lots of people are going to be going to this thing, because people want to see it — they want to be there for history. But I’ve discovered something about myself and this new age that we live in: I’m quite content to watch history happen on the television.

Why, you might ask, is that my decision? Well, first of all, I started thinking about being surrounded by millions and millions of people all trying to see the teeny-weenie little dot up on the platform that is Barack. So I figure, “OK, can I handle millions and millions of people?” Yes, I could do that, but in the event that you have to go to the bathroom or that some strange flip-flop happened in your stomach because you were too tense — well that got me thinking: How would I get through all those people to go the loo?

Now, I’m not going to be sitting with the VIPs because I’m just an IP — not a VIP, just an IP — and I realized that I would be in the middle of all of that, unable to drive in any direction I chose. And if, for whatever reason, there was a moment of panic on my part, I would not be able to move. So I thought better to sit at home and not have to look like an IP, not have to think about how I will get to one of the many port-a-potties that will be there. Just the basic stuff.

Forget all the amazement, the idea that, for the first time in history, in the history of our country, someone who wasn’t a Caucasian man was going to be president of the United States. Do I think that’s a great thing? Yes, of course. But boy, does he have his work cut out for him! I listened to a lot of people talk about all the reasons that some of the decisions he’s making are wrong, and I thought, “Well, if they were wrong, why didn’t anybody start to correct the problems as they happened?” Surely all those Republican and Democratic senators who were sitting for the last eight years saw what was coming, and maybe they were all so brilliant that they couldn’t figure out how to articulate the problems at hand. But now, since we have a new guy coming in, it seems everyone has the information.

Let’s take a look at the economic picture. I’ve talked to a couple of great folks that I know who said, “You know, the only way we’re going to be able to move forward, is taking and creating a gazillion dollars to put into our system of government right now, and the government has to take care of this. The government has to bail out business because business is so far down and so far out of control that it cannot right itself. So government has to step in and go, ‘This is how we’re doing it. This is what you’re going to get. This is the situation we’re going to take hold of piece by piece.’”

Hi my comment to ann c: just because you’re raised by a single mum, you mustn’t rob out a bank, shoot at people… it’s not the way by how many people you’re raised, it’s the way how and what you get teached. and some thoughts to whoopis last post: for some people was the financial crisis the kick in their asses they need to rethink their decisions and actions. but not everyone is honest, when you hear them saying, - My decisions were really bad, that’s what I learned now and I want to change how I make decisions (and what I decide), to make a better future. - This doesn’t necessary mean a better future for you…

Whoopi, well said..the work ahead of us is tremendous. But Obama had a good point..a lot of it was of our own making, so we can correct it. We can start by returning regulations and oversights that were stripped away and allowed the stunning human greed to run rampant. I like the idea of rebuilding our infrastructure and creating jobs in the process. Obama is an intelligent, thoughtful man and he is surrounding himself with great people. I thought his dinner with the conservatives was a stroke of genius He really is a uniter. While I appreciate his making history as the first non-caucasian president, it is his intelligence and global appeal that ranks first with me. I believe he has already started to restore our tarnished image. My friends in other countries are as delighted as I am. I also loved your emark to Ann Coulter on how she “could dish it out but she couldn’t take it” I appreciate your comments ,whoopi, “idealistic but pragmatic”

Hi All; Let me begin by saying that I am trully impressed with President Bush’s final exit speech. Who would have thunk it! He said “I screwed up, oops my bad” in not so many words. Now that we are going into an historic era, I am going in with both eyes open, not that I am looking for anything in particular but I am looking. Barak Obama is going to make a change in this world come hell or high water. It’s destiny!. I am with you Whoop, It is going to take a while so I hope he has his Timbs on because the sh** is thick.

Business is the horse that pulls the whole cart in America. Government crushes businesses. Business is the majority of the GNP - government produces nothing on it’s own - it is a parasite on business. Growing government is like growing a big tapeworm inside a human body - it will be at the expense of business. Here’s a great article that explains how big government destroys business growth with make-work jobs. http://www.cato-at-liberty.org/2009/01/12/making-work-destroying-wealth/ There is an old saying: Anything that you can find in the phone book should not be done by government. Bush, Sr. had been an ambassador to the UN and later the special Envoy to China under Nixon. He had lots of foreign policy experience. He had a military AND a business background having founded his own oil company. He served in the House of Representatives. Panetta, an accountant, is a shocking choice to the entire intelligence community because it was due to him in large part that the CIA and the military were gutted under Bill Clinton in what Panetta called a Peace Dividend - that’s why we had a surplus. With our defenses cut we were were attacked again and again by AlQueda without a serious response until after 911. Our intelligence and military were in a shambles when Bush took over. Obama looks at things differently because he has no experience: Obama has ZERO governing experience ZERO business experience ZERO military experience ZERO energy experience ZERO foreign policy experience His CIA choice has no intelligence experience. His state department head has no foreign policy experience, and has never negotiated a single treatise. His treasury choice is a tax cheat. His justice choice has facilitated pardons for some of the most dangerous terrorists in American history, and an enabler of terrorist Iran. His education secretary comes from a Chicago area where only 18% of children are reading at grade level - 82% reading below grade level. His transportation choice is ranked in the TOP 10 biggest pork spenders in Congress. Obama’s new regulatory czar, Cass Sunstein, believes keeping pets is a form of slavery, that hunting should be outlawed, that animals should have the right to sue humans, and that meat eating should be “phased out.” I’m sure you heard Obama say yesterday that “Anything’s Possible.” That’s a confidence tactic if I’ve ever heard one. Over-promising, selling government as the only solution; every demagogue in history has used this tactic, to great disaster. “Confidence men” have always been with us. Our desperation only makes us more susceptible to these “con-men.” It’s going to be “Hell in America,” very soon, and these will look like the good old days.

Bella Mia I have to write how I disagree with much of your assessment about the New Administration. However, I do agree about the kind of situations we have before us. Also, Big Business IS the CART - WE the people are the horses. When any government is overloaded either top down or from the bottom up there is most assuredly going to be some form of collapse or dislocation - it is a matter of physics. Yes, I believe there will be some situations created because of the ‘new administration’ - since they have to CLEAN UP so much from the previous one. There will be a lot of problems which spew out of the messy transition, somewhat akin to a fizzy drink which has been under pressure for too long and gets shaken a bit, or a lot. It depends on how “We the People” handle ourselves - either in community, or in dissention amongst the masses all struggling and clawing our way toward the top of the heap. It is OUR choice. We need not be concerned about who gets to the top of the heap first, or who gets there the best, the fastest and who gets the shiniest toys. We need to be reminded we are ALL in this together, and we can and have survived so many other times in our herstory/history. I am pleased now and proud to say; We ARE Americans, afterall!

Here is a 3 minute video with graphs and charts that plainly shows how government spending prolonged the depression, and only take money out of one side of the economy to put it in the other. Big Government is Not Stimulus http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Av-LCoVcXQ

Whoopi - looks as if the naysayers are already at it. I pity them for their lack of vision; I really do. What we have with Barack Obama is the first President in years and years whose intelligence and world view are absolutely on track with the times. I’ve read his writing and I’m impressed with his frankness, not only about himself, but about what is realistic. I know that 80% of the American public is behind him, and that’s remarkable in such a fractured society where so many people are under stress. If he can galvanize the public into action and make sure the message of individual responsibility is the foundation for bringing us out of the current crisis, then he will be a leader for the ages. If wOw contributors are a microcosm of American internet users, then it’s obvious that there are people who will try their best to undercut any of Obama’s plans and accomplishments. But there are so many more of us wanting his administration to succeed, and wanting to participate in this new era - that I believe that, step by step, day by day, we will be able to get our country back on course. We need to be realistic about President Obama’s ability to perform miracles, and we need to give his new administration the time it deserves to begin the huge job of turning the Ship of State around, but I am confident that it will happen if we all do our part.

As I am reading these posts, it occurs to me that change is very threatening to a lot of people. That the underlying theme of the Henleys, of donald duck’s capitol letters, etc is one of fear and anger. Their cup is always going to be half empty. What a way to have to go through life. To actually be incapable of having a vision other than what the Limbaughs/Coulters say is appropriate. Sad. Certainly, they do not display any sign of National Pride or gratitude of how they are so fortunate to live in this nation. We have seen the mess we are in because the thinking of the past 15 years has not worked. The Contract of America that Gingrich is now proven to be an impotent attempt of a certain group of people to attain power and control. Well, yes, it was effective for a few years. Got Bush elected for 2 terms. Drove Clinton nuts because of the worse partisan divide in history. But, most of us figured it out. And, decided that enough is enough, it’s time to get back to not necessarily “smaller” government, but effective government that works well. And, these sad, angry and negative people never seem to acknowledge one fact: We are so fortunate to be able to witness a hand over of power that is a happy occasion and a non-violent one. And, that they can speak with all of their negativity all they want because there is nothing keeping them from it in America. That in all the world, there is still no better place to be living as here, with all of our shortcomings and problems. Perhaps, over time, these people will want to participate in the sacrifice that it will require to surmount our rising multiple problems. And, instead of being angry with them in return for their anger of us, we should pity them, for they are the ones that will be left behind.

Diana very well said I had already decided pretty much the same..I feel sorry for them I also wondered what positive things they might be doing, if any last week I tutored people in Spanish and English, read bilingual poems to a pre k class and enjoy the happiness emanating from DC!

Thank you, Dutch. One of the biggest changes that is going to have to occur is that all of us stop the complaining and putting down of every novel idea that comes along, roll up our sleeves and get to work putting our money where our mouth is. Frankly, I’m tired of seeing the negativism when we need ideas and inspiration and cheerful faces working together.

again, not surprisingly, I am in agreement with you what is the quote? “if you are not part of the solution ,you are part of the problem?” or something like that…I ,too,am tired of the negativism…and I am not so naive to think there is a miraculous solution to all the problems that face us…it will be long and hard work.. I am thinking of a poster I used to have….picture of some cute ducks..it said “Lead, follow or get out of the way” ! LOL
