Whoopi Weighs in on Sarah Palin and Reader Comments on Her Obama Post!
I’m not quite sure what Helen’s point is when she says, "His African heritage comes from Arabic slave traders in Africa. The fact that he is presenting himself in this way is deceitful and wrong! It will catch up with him." Well, Helen, history will catch up with you. There were slavers all over Africa, there were slavers all over the world, and that doesn’t make his people slavers. You can’t really put that together.
As I was looking at the post, as I read my own words, I realized I had not made my joke clear enough (not surprising for a comic like myself). I was trying to make fun of the fact that the columns reminded me of Virginia and Washington, DC, and not Greece, but I guess I missed that. Also, I should have mentioned, and was remiss in not mentioning the Biden family. The speech the night before last was extraordinary. Joe Biden is a great cat, a guy I like a lot. His son, Bo Biden, I’ve never met, but I was just moved to tears (literally) by what I heard. So I’m very happy, very comfortable with the choice of Joe Biden.
But getting back to John McCain, whose birthday is today by the way — happy birthday, John McCain! He’s done a very masterful job of tipping the attention away from Barack. As you can see on all of the news stations, they’re paying a lot of attention to who the VP choice is going to be, especially now that the woman question has been placed in there. I think that’s pretty extraordinary, too. So I have to tip my hat to you, John McCain.
But here’s my question to the McCain camp about their picking a woman for the veep slot: Is it possible that you don’t understand what women are saying about why they wanted a female for president? It wasn’t just any old woman, and I don’t know Sarah Palin, so I can’t just call her any old woman, but that wasn’t the point. The point was that they thought Hillary Clinton had something to offer.
Now, Sarah Palin, as I understand, is a pretty strict conservative. She’s not for choice, which makes her not-so-interesting to me. And I think a lot of women thought John McCain still believed in choice, but then, of course, he changed his mind. I think we need a little more information, John McCain, before it becomes a slam dunk and you can say, "See Barack didn’t pick a woman and I did."
