Whoopi Weighs in on Sarah Palin and Reader Comments on Her Obama Post!

Whoopi Goldberg

Well, as I’m watching television this morning, it appears that John McCain may pick Gov. Sarah Palin, of Alaska, to appease all of those angry women — the ones who were going to vote for Hillary and then threatened to vote for John McCain — by just picking a woman. It’s expedient, and should make everybody feel better. After all, what do women actually know? They’ll pick any female, as long it’s not a guy. That kind of thinking is so insulting I don’t know what to say.

I’m sure Sarah Palin (we’ll find out more information on her) is a wonderful woman, but if you’re a Democrat why would you go for a Republican female that you don’t know much about just because she’s female? Has John McCain missed the point? Or is that the point? That these angry women are angry because a woman was not picked … not Hillary Clinton … but a woman.

I looked at some of the comments to my Barack Obama post this morning and I thought they were fantastic. There was one lady who was irritated with me, I guess because I called Barack Obama an African American.

Well, normally one would say, "Well, his dad is African," as some of the other folks who were on the site pointed out and, "He is American," so that would make him an African American, in the truest sense of the word. The irritated comment was from Helen King. Well, Helen, he brags about his family but I’m sure he just wanted to make folks who were concerned about whether or not he could deal with white people feel better about the fact that half of his family is white. You know, so he’d be able to talk to white folks without freaking people out.

Helen said, "You never hear him brag about that." Well, in fact, he showed mama’s picture and grandmama’s picture and granddaddy’s picture quite a bit. We see pictures of his black father, but it’s kind of obvious he’s black, so he wants to let everybody know that he also has white in him. I guess in a funny way it means that he’s a well-rounded American. And just for the record, "African American" is cool, and although I do enjoy seeing the word Negro, one doesn’t generally say African Negro. One would just say Negro.

My husband has an interesting theory. He thinks McCain picked her because nobody else wanted it because they don’t expect him to win. Lieberman doesn’t want to be seen as the guy who lost two VP elections, plus may not be willing to risk burning ALL his bridges with the Democrats for a losing ticket. Mitt Romney wants to run for presdident again and doesn’t want to be the guy who lost the Primary AND the election as VP. But Palin really has nothing to lose. Most of the country doesn’t know who she is, all she has to do is spend two months campaigning, if she loses she goes back to being governor of Alaska but with more name recognition. It sort of makes sense to me. Sure there is a chance McCain will win, but not a big enough one for the people with the most to lose to risk it as his VP. Also, have you heard McCain has only met this woman once? For a short meeting about 6 months ago? Then he had one phone call with her yesterday. That is it. Sounds like a last minute desperate choice to me.

Here’s what Senator Boxer said: “The vice president is a heartbeat away from becoming president, so to choose someone with not one hour’s worth of experience on national issues is a dangerous choice. If John McCain thought that choosing Sarah Palin would attract Hillary Clinton voters, he is badly mistaken. The only similarity between her and Hillary Clinton is that they are both women. On the issues, they could not be further apart. Sen. McCain had so many other options if he wanted to put a woman on his ticket, such as Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison or Sen. Olympia Snowe -– they would have been an appropriate choice compared to this dangerous choice. In addition, Sarah Palin is under investigation by the Alaska state legislature, which makes this more incomprehensible.”

My husband listens to NPR all the time and he heard a story that about a day before McCain announced he was picking Palin, her Wikipedia description had been changed. Someone at Wikipedia, and editor or something, noticed that one person came in and made several changes, taking out mention of her beauty pagent history, the investigation into her actions in Alaska, etc., in other words, spiffing it up a bit to make her more palatable. The Wikipedia person said the person changing it did so under her son’s name but that it was the son who was too young to do it. Anyway Wikipedia changed it back to it’s original content and put some sort of lock on it so that no one can make changes without proper authorization.

Man, am I glad this point/these points were made. First of all I can only agree with you MORE Miss Whoopi. Can it be that John McCain and his buddies have so little regard for women that, like you said, just picking “any old woman” was going to pacify women voters who had supported Hillary Clinton? That this pick would have tons of suburban housewives ripping off their approns and clamoring to join John McCain and the Busholes? What about the cleaning lady? Why not her? Her stories would be way more interesting than Governor Palin’s ones about gaffing a 250 pound swordfish in the middle of a nor’easter and gunning down a giant Mountain Ram! Believing this pick is going to draw significant numbers of Democrats is not clear-thinking. Believing that women voters in general will charge over to McCain’s side like running to a Blue Light Special at K-Mart is an insult to women in general. Hopefully you all heard Lily Ledbetter speaking about her ripoff by Goodyear specifically because she was a woman. She spoke from the heart at the second night of the convention.. The Equal Rights Amendment has been sitting on the table since 1970 and still hasn’t been passed. Ladies and gentlemen once Barak Obama is in the White House, all that’s left for us is to see the ERA and the Equal Pay Act be put into law. That the right to choose is just that. Afterwards, equal rights for gays. Next stop: immigration repair. I have said in another post that Hillary was done in by her own party. I saw how Howard Dean reacted when she threw her hat in the ring. Still a man’s world as long as we continue to accept the back seat.

Obama comes from a proud American heritage. He is no accidental American! As a member of the World War II generation myself, I honor the fact that the man who raised Barry Obama, his grandfather, and handed down to him his values was a soldier in General Patton’s army in Europe during that conflict. He was an all-American hero! What in the World makes Barack Obama less an American than you and I?

The Equal Rights Amendment was first proposed in 1923. I was born in 1929, and so far have been waiting all of my life for the citizens of this nation to see the light and pass it! ” EQUALITY OF RIGHTS UNDER THE LAW SHALL NOT BE DENIED OR ABRIDGED BY THE UNITED STATES OR BY ANY STATE ON ACCOUNT OF SEX. ” That’s it! That’s the thing, the whole thing, and nothing but the thing. I wonder if any of you can see the dreadful threat it poses our nation? .

Unfortunately a black man could not serve under Patton! I believe that Obama filters his ideas and assessment of the world through white privilege. His grandmother used inflammatory language towards blacks. If his granddaddy was such a patriot why wasn’t Obama encourage to serve in ROTC or the National Guards. As far as I’m concern he knows little about black folks struggles. Just because Michelle introduced him to collard greens and Motown doesn’t get my vote!

To those of you who are jumping the gun about Sarah Palin…I happen to live in Alaska, in the “small town” that she used to be the mayor of… First of all, Wasilla is NOT a town of 5000…a 2000 census gave a number of 8,471, and a 2008 City Hall Estimate puts it at 13,571 currently. Surely it isn’t New York, but the 3rd largest city in Alaska is still something & still “trust me” comes with it’s own unique set or challenges. Sarah has 5 children who she has raised on her own here in the state the oldest is in the military and the youngest with Downs Syndrome. She still takes the time out to attend public events and remind people that she is a real person. Her husband works with my best friend’s husbandof alaska. He has a real job, and these are real people. Not folks that spend their days eating bon-bon’s and waving to the crowds. They both made their livings in the past as commercial fisherman, which if you know anything about alaska (not just what you see on tv) is an extremely difficult and trying job for ANYONE. In a world where the termanator can be govorner I am proud to call her my govornor. Not because she wears a dress, but because she has earned it. Anyone that has called this a silly or even dangerous choice has clearly not done their homework. They are not read anything about what she has done for our state or the things that she is changing here. They are most likely the people that think that we live in igloo’s up here and she clearly can’t know anything except hot to hunt for whale & coach her dogsled team. It drives me CRAZY!

Sarah, by Alaskan standards 8,471 may be large, but it is tiny. 13,571 is tiny. The state has less population that any large city in the US. Not one thing you mentioned here makes this woman qualified to be a heart beat away from the Presidency. And from what I have learned, this woman has never had to run against an opponent who was popular or not facing criminal charges. Biden will be a much different story.

I wouldn’t be so proud of Biden if I were you! Did you see how he treated Anita Hill all those years ago! He is a despicable Washington insider and a male chauvinist of the highest order!

As a senator, Mr. Biden is perhaps best known for his focus on foreign policy, but he has had a hand in legislation targeting work-and-family issues. According to a cached version of his senatorial campaign Web site (which since this weekend has automatically referred visitors to the Obama-Biden campaign site), Mr. Biden is a co-sponsor of the Healthy Families Act, which would require employers with more than 15 employees to offer seven paid sick days a year. In the 1990s, he was the primary sponsor of the Violence Against Women Act and supported the Family and Medical Leave Act, which guarantees workers up to 12 weeks of unpaid leave to care for a family member.” - Wall Street Journal, Aug. 25, 2008

Sarah Your input is welcome. I hope more women from Alaska join the conversation. Hang in there and good luck for your candidate.

Sarah—-Your state has less population that my very diverse city of San Francisco, with it’s crucial port, it being the HQ for many imajore US industries. And we have a Mayor who has served longer than your gov has been a mayor of a 8,500 pop city or a 606,000 state. Our Mayor, as brilliant as he is—is not VP material and neighter is Miss Congeniality. So I will certainly be doing everything in my power for her to stay there…and going to events in Alaska has NOTHING to do with be VP of the US. Give me a break.

Hey there fellow Alaskan. What’s the weather like today? Has the “Mountain dust” shown up yet? I’m a “former” Alaskan! Glad to hear from one who has the real scoop on Sarah for a change. So many rumors flying around. Bear with me, I have a few questions for you. * What’s the median income now? It was about double the rest of the country when we were there, thanks to the oil companies giving the state their “gratitude money.” * What exactly is considered “middle-class” in AK these days? * Have those good folks in Juneau decided when they are going to listen to the voters who said (4 times while we were there, I might add) “move OUR capital” nearer to us - J Q Public - yet? I personally voted twice for that! It was supposed to go just above Wasilla - somewhere near Houston, I think? * How can can you expect us in the “lower 48” to take seriously a group who would vote your Senator back in a primary, while he’s under investigation for accepting cash to double the size of his house, yet not report it as income? And that bridge! Didn’t even phase him that there was a plea, from another Senator to use that money to rebuild the bridge from Miss. to LA. (And he wasn’t from either state! Now That’s gravitas!) * And how you expect anyone from “outside” to resoundly support someone who hasn’t seen or known first hand the crushing economic disasters we’ve had down here, much of it due to Wall Street & Oil Greed? Remember Enron? * Give her her due - she did stop his “bridge to nowhere” - but what did she do with the money? Did she give back the $ to the Feds? or use it for other things in AK? And was it really moxie on her part, or just because she realized it was a ridiculous proposal to begin with? Please understand, when those of you in AK who keep sending Stephens & that other guy - forgot his name already- (both of whom have been in DC since the tundra used to freeze), we don’t exactly see what you do - in those you choose to represent you. And yes, it’s very harsh up there. But that’s more the climate than anything else, not the economy, or cutbacks by the Feds to the large cities & states. You’re lucky to have oil paying the bulk of your bills, and haven’t had half of the problems we’ve had down here. Your economy is based on Oil! We lived in Anchorage and have been to Wasilla, Fairbanks, St Mary’s, Kodiak, all up & down the Kenai, and to Valdez - before the tanker leak, and the pipeline leak (that our friend was called upon to be the engineer to fix the problem), and many other villages & towns. All are smaller than most of ours. Take Wasilla and triple it, that’s how many live where I do. Our jobs have gone overseas. Our hospitals are closing. Our insurances costs are out of sight for most of us. Our prescriptions are sending our seniors into bankruptcy - for get those under the poverty level - zip - 0 - nada for them. Our cities & infrastructure is decrepitly old, but we can’t repair them. Our schools struggle with over crowding, lack of good updated supplies, and help for teachers and students alike. Our taxes are killing the middle class and seniors, many of whom need to use our Food pantries. Our middle class is becoming poorer by the day. Our utilities are straining our pay checks. Our gas and food prices jump up every week, though lately, gas has gone down a few pennies. And our sons and daughters are in a mistaken war, loosing life and limb, with no help from the Feds for them! There’s so more, but I’ll spare you, but those are some of the things I don’t believe Sarah has much knowledge about. Having lived in AK, many of these - if not most, register on the thinking of a population that cold fit in any one of our large cities, with plenty of room to spare. So, forgive us down here in the trenches, if we’re not exactly enthusiastic supporters of someone so connected to Oil, and so disconnected to the people in the lower 48 - to represent us, either as VP, or God forbid, as President! Just because she was a mayor for a small lake town, or Governor for - how long has it been? less than 2 years? - doesn’t automatically give - anyone the best of qualifications to be in the National scene.
