Whoopi Weighs in on Sarah Palin and Reader Comments on Her Obama Post!

Whoopi Goldberg

Well, as I’m watching television this morning, it appears that John McCain may pick Gov. Sarah Palin, of Alaska, to appease all of those angry women — the ones who were going to vote for Hillary and then threatened to vote for John McCain — by just picking a woman. It’s expedient, and should make everybody feel better. After all, what do women actually know? They’ll pick any female, as long it’s not a guy. That kind of thinking is so insulting I don’t know what to say.

I’m sure Sarah Palin (we’ll find out more information on her) is a wonderful woman, but if you’re a Democrat why would you go for a Republican female that you don’t know much about just because she’s female? Has John McCain missed the point? Or is that the point? That these angry women are angry because a woman was not picked … not Hillary Clinton … but a woman.

I looked at some of the comments to my Barack Obama post this morning and I thought they were fantastic. There was one lady who was irritated with me, I guess because I called Barack Obama an African American.

Well, normally one would say, "Well, his dad is African," as some of the other folks who were on the site pointed out and, "He is American," so that would make him an African American, in the truest sense of the word. The irritated comment was from Helen King. Well, Helen, he brags about his family but I’m sure he just wanted to make folks who were concerned about whether or not he could deal with white people feel better about the fact that half of his family is white. You know, so he’d be able to talk to white folks without freaking people out.

Helen said, "You never hear him brag about that." Well, in fact, he showed mama’s picture and grandmama’s picture and granddaddy’s picture quite a bit. We see pictures of his black father, but it’s kind of obvious he’s black, so he wants to let everybody know that he also has white in him. I guess in a funny way it means that he’s a well-rounded American. And just for the record, "African American" is cool, and although I do enjoy seeing the word Negro, one doesn’t generally say African Negro. One would just say Negro.

dear’ vicky…as a native american, i have to tell you that the use of ‘honest INJUN’ is very offensive..does that epithet automatically imply we ‘indians’ are inherently dishonest, and someone would have to travel a long way to find an ‘honest’ one…mccain has a ringer, obama turned away hillary…men never cease to amaze me…always trying to placate women by one means or the other..well, johnny, let me tell ya..ya still aint gettin the hillary votes…..

You GO Whoopie! Saw you this AM on the View, you done good girl! Sorry Vicky, First of all, does it matter that Obama’s “Black”? “Half black”? or “African American”??? Does it matter that Palin is a woman? No, neither count. It’s what they stand for that counts. And Sarah stands for much of what I don’t. If she’s the “miracle” - then I’m not Catholic (which I am) and still, I could not, in good conscious, vote for her because of her stance on the many issues important for all of us! Vicky, have you ever lived in Alaska? I have for 7 long frigid years! Do you have any idea who really runs AK? It certainly isn’t the citizens up there, whose politicians show a total distain for their constitutants. The Alaskan public voted 4 times (while we were there!) to move the Capitol from Juneau, where you had to have bucks to get to, only 2 ways - by plane or boat. Yet the politicians opted to stay - far from their voters as possible. (Wouldn’t want to make it easier for the bulk of the population living in Anchorage, Fairbanks, the Kenai Peninsula and everywhere in between to get to see you, now would we?) Alaska and it’s people are OWNED by the Oil industry. And Sarah will be a big boon to the Oil industry and visa versa (She even proudly said that hubby, Todd, works for an oil company - when he’s not fishing that is!). Oil runs AK & visa versa. Every Alaskan has gotten $1,000 - per individual - per year, since 1981! The AK oil companies subsidize Alaskan economy in several other ways too. They pay plenty to the State, so the state can give each Alaskan that annual “gift” (non taxable by the state - only by the Fed), which makes AK’s State taxes a joke! Because of this oil money, Alaskans pay the least state tax of all the rest of the 50, & have no sales tax. Alaskans also pay a ridiculously lowered utility bills, Heating, Electric & water - about 1/3 what the rest of the nation has to fork out! To top it off, AK has the greatest surplus cash reserves in the nation. No problems with the state having to cut services up there! And if Sarah is middle class - then check out the median income up there - the highest in the nation. In 1978 it was $35,000, when the rest of the nation was around $20,000! I’d bet it’s at lest double what your state median income is … I know it’s double what mine is! And despite some native opposition, Anwar being in a Federally protected wilderness, she wants to give oil companies more rights, to drill there. SO, why not? Let the oil companies mess up that ecosystem like they did in Prudhoe Bay - their storage barrels leaching into the ground and water all over the place, and later, they had to plug a leak in the pipeline. (That on top of the Valdez oil spill - that fishermen still say is affecting their livelihood. Does she care that the tundra is warming up - no longer frozen in the winter. It’s becoming “wetland” & giving off carbon dioxide, rather than absorbing it, as it has been for thousands of years! Probabily not, long as there’s them there black gold in those lands! The only reason oil prices are so high, has nothing to do with the Supply, like the oil companies want us to believe, BUT its because Wall Street & the Oil Companies want it so, it’s their own bottom line they care about. They made billions after Katrina, said it was lack of supply? And they have done so every year since. Just look at all the areas they have permission to drill in, but they aren’t. And check out for yourself, how much their profits rise every year, all while they haven’t invested a dime back into drilling in the “permitted” areas they’ve already leased. Nor have they built any more refineries (for the last 20 - 30 years!), or looked for better ways to harness renewable energy. In fact, they’ve been fighting that since Carter (‘75) warned us about an eventual energy crisis! Yeah, Sarah’s one real smart cookie - smart as a fox “cookie” in a hen house. And she knows where her bread is buttered. With oil!

No Way-No How -No McCain
Vicky, Senator Boxer issued this statement on your ‘girl’ and hopefully she will be indicted for Troopergate to prevent this ridiculous appointment of a totally unqualified person: “The vice president is a heartbeat away from becoming president, so to choose someone with not one hour’s worth of experience on national issues is a dangerous choice. If John McCain thought that choosing Sarah Palin would attract Hillary Clinton voters, he is badly mistaken. The only similarity between her and Hillary Clinton is that they are both women. On the issues, they could not be further apart. Sen. McCain had so many other options if he wanted to put a woman on his ticket, such as Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison or Sen. Olympia Snowe -– they would have been an appropriate choice compared to this dangerous choice. In addition, Sarah Palin is under investigation by the Alaska state legislature, which makes this more incomprehensible.”

Whoopi IS over it. Well, half over it, since Sen. Obama is mixed race. You apparently are confused, or still thinking the Archie Bunker way — any black blood is black. Most people in this country don’t hate Sen. Clinton, Vicky, in case you were asleep during the past two years. 14 Million of us voted for her, for example, funny way to show hatred, eh? How is it you think Sen. Obama doesn’t fit into America’s agenda. Who is this America you are speaking for? Because young people are registering in record numbers just to vote for him. This Sarah, this girl?” Not so much. “IT all?” What, NRA, anti-choice, anti-environment, anti-science, anti-evolution, appealing to the “kill-and-drill” crowd? Could you’all please just join the rest of us in the 21st Century?

Sheesh, who let the cranky McCain supporters in here? Something I’ve noticed over the years is that Republicans as a group are the nastiest, most mean-spirited folks I’ve ever had the displeasure of attempting a civilized discussion Seriously. While these women beat us into a pulp, that is those of us who “act” like we “know” Governor Palin, apparently know her quite well and had tea just this morning! Get a grip Stepford Wives, the party’s over. In my humble view, Senator McCain would’ve tanked if he’d chosen Mother Theresa as his running mate. The maddeningly obvious choice of a woman, no matter whom, truly shows how much the Republican party respects women as thinkers. They’ve got to go!

CRANKY” Bonita…..what a generous assessment of what we have been subjected to here. Perhaps they will be discouraged by the fact that they found no fertile ground in which to plant their insulting agenda, and will move on? One can hope.
I sincerely appreciate your thoughtful post.

Thank you Countrywoman, I’m so back and forth with wanting to be a fair and unbiased intelligent person or a bitchy hag with claws rampant…but, honestly, is it just me or does the right just come out soooo nasty it pushes even an evenly dispositioned person to respond rabidly. Boy, this is gonna be some fight! Obama/Biden 2008

I think Sarah is perfect for the position of vice president. She has executive experience from running her own company to mayor of a town (regardless of size, she still had to create a budget, provide services, etc,) and then spent almost 2 years heading a state as Governor. No matter the size of the state, it still is a complex job requiring more than it does to act as Senator for only 1 year. (The second year has been spent running for President.) Her other accomplishments with the Ethics committee impress me. She certainly is not a Washingtonian. She may not take the train home each night like Biden. (Why hasn’t anyone laughed at the claim that he knows the names of the conductors? They wear name badges!!!) She said no to the federal government for monies for the bridge to nowhere. Smart lady. She’s also is responsible for a natural gas pipe line. She knows the ins and outs of running a state. She has a son going to Iraq. She’ll soon learn that a good commander-in-chief listens to his generals and will want to pull out our troops as soon as conditions on the ground allow it to happen. This is nothing different from Bush or Obama’s positions. Or any American’s position. I’m positive she would have gone to visit wounded soldiers if she was in Germany even though she could not bring in a camera or an adviser in to the hospital. She would not have gone to the Ritz Carlton to work out and then give an interview to CNN. She would not have blamed the Pentagon for making such a poor decision. She understands our need for a balance between conservation and energy needs. She’s been around making a name for herself but you must remember that the main stream media decide who they want to cover. If your name isn’t Obama, forget it. He does make good copy. I think she is more than qualified. It is about time someone realizes that a woman belongs in the White House. I can see her and Una Merkel of Germany having a great conversation. I can’t believe those who say that they’ve never heard of her nor knew she was on the short list . This is ridiculous. I heard about her at least a month ago. Perhaps the press should start doing their jobs. I have a great problem with her stance on Choice. I believe it is a woman’s choice to control her body. I also have gay friends who are married. I do take heart in McCain’s comments with Pastor Warren that he is Anti Choice but also a Federalist and does not think it is the federal government’s right to enact legislation on the subject. I still have trouble with the gay marriage issue. As a woman, I would no more have chosen to vote for Hillary because she is a woman than I would expect a Black American to vote for Senator Obama because of his skin color. I’ve carefully followed the issues to make my determination. I liked Hillary because she was not in Nancy’s pocket. I keep reminding my friends who are Democrats, Republicans and Independents that the Articles 1, 2,& 3 state that Congress makes the laws; the President enacts the laws; and the Supreme Court interprets the laws. This has not been happening. We’ve been mired in party politics to a degree I’ve never seen. When my party puts its needs before the needs of the American public, I lose faith in them. I’ve been a Democrat for more than 40 years and today I am ashamed of what we are doing. I think McCain will create an administration that will rock the boat. He is his own man. Obama is a result of the Chicago machine. Every part of his campaign is carefully orchestrated by party hacks which have been around for years. The fact that Nancy claims he is the salvation of America really scares me. It is all of our responsibilities to take off the party blinders and start to listen carefully to what is being said. We need to watch all networks to find some balance. I refused to be brainwashed by those who are pundits. I thought Hillary gave a tremendous speech, very much pro-Obama and then heard so many pundits chop it down because it didn’t…blah, blah, blah! America - start your brains working.

My brain’s working, Linda. And it just can’t compute that a woman who was a mayor to an Alaskan town of less than 9,000 people for a few years is qualified to lead a nation of 300 million! I’m sorry, but it just doesn’t wash. I’d never hire her for the job, regardless of her moxie and intelligence and beauty (beauty?). The entire state of Alaska has less people than the city of San Francisco at 750,000, and it’s culture and industry is not exactly a slice of mainstream American life and industry. I agree with your assessment of the mainstream media. That’s why I get my info from a variety of sources, less biased and more straight information. I’m not a party person, I’m a policies person. And I worry about an old, sick man becoming president, then passing his power to Sarah Palin who is hopelessly out of her depth. And lastly, if you think that every part of McCain’s campaign isn’t carefully orchestrated by party hacks which have been around for years, YOU need to start your brain working. Sorry, I know you want her to work out. But it’s not logical.

What’s not logical are big city liberals who know nothing about Alaskan politics passing snap judgment on Sarah Palin and regurgitating lots of the Democratic party lines that they’ve been spoon fed via their party machinery! Governor Palin is infinitely more qualified for her nominated position than a one-time US senator who hasn’t even served out a true full term and lacks any sort of executive experience whatsoever!

Fariba, I lived in Anchorage. I know Alaska politics better than the average American. And just for the record, I’m not a “big-city liberal”, nor do I “regurgitate” Democratic — or Republican — party lines. You’re insulting me, and you know absolutely nothing about me, drawing a picture of who I am based on my opinions and the fact that they oppose yours. I’ve done my homework on this lady using objective sources, have you? One look at Palin’s biography, her position on women’s reproductive rights and scant record of experience set my mind reeling. She also has not served a full term as Governor, less than 2 years. Her “executive” experience amounts to the PTA, city councilwoman and mayor of a town with less than 8,000 citizens. With her creationist beliefs, beauty pageant looks and conservative views, I can see why the base of her party loves her, and that’s fine. But please, don’t tell the rest of America to “think” when you’re not doing it yourself.
