Whoopi Weighs in on Sarah Palin and Reader Comments on Her Obama Post!

Whoopi Goldberg

Well, as I’m watching television this morning, it appears that John McCain may pick Gov. Sarah Palin, of Alaska, to appease all of those angry women — the ones who were going to vote for Hillary and then threatened to vote for John McCain — by just picking a woman. It’s expedient, and should make everybody feel better. After all, what do women actually know? They’ll pick any female, as long it’s not a guy. That kind of thinking is so insulting I don’t know what to say.

I’m sure Sarah Palin (we’ll find out more information on her) is a wonderful woman, but if you’re a Democrat why would you go for a Republican female that you don’t know much about just because she’s female? Has John McCain missed the point? Or is that the point? That these angry women are angry because a woman was not picked … not Hillary Clinton … but a woman.

I looked at some of the comments to my Barack Obama post this morning and I thought they were fantastic. There was one lady who was irritated with me, I guess because I called Barack Obama an African American.

Well, normally one would say, "Well, his dad is African," as some of the other folks who were on the site pointed out and, "He is American," so that would make him an African American, in the truest sense of the word. The irritated comment was from Helen King. Well, Helen, he brags about his family but I’m sure he just wanted to make folks who were concerned about whether or not he could deal with white people feel better about the fact that half of his family is white. You know, so he’d be able to talk to white folks without freaking people out.

Helen said, "You never hear him brag about that." Well, in fact, he showed mama’s picture and grandmama’s picture and granddaddy’s picture quite a bit. We see pictures of his black father, but it’s kind of obvious he’s black, so he wants to let everybody know that he also has white in him. I guess in a funny way it means that he’s a well-rounded American. And just for the record, "African American" is cool, and although I do enjoy seeing the word Negro, one doesn’t generally say African Negro. One would just say Negro.

Deni Thanks, I just couldn’t let that statement go by …..six months…. geez! Anyway, how are ya? I have see you around but was all mixed up in other posts. You know how it gets. My hubby and son and his pals are up in Yosemite again at the Strawberry Music Festival at Camp Mather. So here I am with a million things to do checking the boards. Oh well. I like to see my friends.

Hi Mugsy Good to see you on the boards again. I hope you are doing better. Have you been to Strawberry before? I used to go but camping with my back is no longer that much fun, and it is so crowded now than when I went 20 years ago. He said he played all day and night, had a great time. My 15 year old and his buddy go up and just have a blast. He put down his fiddle a couple of years ago for guitar, but I wish he would pick it up again. They all had a great time.

Yes, but like you my back and the ground got a divorce some time ago, in terms of sleeping arrangements. Don’t worry about the fiddle. Everything he learns to play will just feed back into the other. And crowds? Oh, doggies, no….

You ignorant twit. Where is it written that those who make their living in a public arena can no longer voice an opinion? Did Whoopi Goldberg give up her citizenship when she stepped in front of a camera? When the klieg lights went on, did her brains fall out the back of her head? Whoopi is doing what everyone in this country should be doing - listening, thinking, speaking out. While Obama isn’t Muslim, there is nothing wrong with being a Muslim so get over that bit of bigotry if it’s possible for an ignorant twit to do that.

Ignorant twit? Hmm, how long did it take you to come up with that? Twice, no less.

What a week! Mc Cain’s choice of Sarah Palin seemed, at first, purely political to me—a calculated choice designed more to improve McCain’s chances of snagging more female voters—than it was guided by the principle that a vice presidential choice is or should be fundamentally about governing. And its announcement certainly soaked up all post-convention buzz about Obama’s speech and whether he sufficiently answered the vexing question of his “specifics.” Now, after a day and evening, and after reading a few columns and listening intermittently to the cable pundits, Mc Cain’s announcement has me more depressed than anything else. If McCain wanted to offer the vice presidential spot to a woman, then why not offer it to a Republican woman who actually has the depth of experience that would enhance his claim that experience is vital—-as well as change? Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison never crossed his mind? Or Senator Olympia Snowe? Imagine the excitement and the respect either choice would have garnered. And imagine—crazy, I know—-that news analysts might actually be comparing Hutchison’s or Snowe’s knowledge/experience with national domestic issues; foreign policy or the economy to those of Senator Biden’s. But instead of selecting a qualified candidate to run with him, McCain selects a neophyte. I mean no disrespect to Gov. Palin; however, her experience—now as a governor of a sparely populated state [about 600,00] and previously as a mayor of an extremely small town —-is woefully inadequate preparation to be selected as a vice presidential candidate. Seriously. The most important criteria of any vice president is the ability to assume, in a moment, the Presidency. Times never get any easier; the position never becomes any less complicated; the stakes never get lower. In recent history, more than a few vice presidents have had to do that: Truman, Johnson, Ford. No one can assume that any president will finish a term, or that a vice presidential choice’s main impact is about grabbing a news cycle rather than governing. McCain showed some trait—I don’t know whether it’s rashness, thoughtlessness, or disingenuousness—-to pick Gov Palin as his running mate. He showed a fundamental disregard for the American people to make the claim that she’s ready to assume the presidency. And Palin’s acceptance of the nomination shows hubris. And we’ve had too much of all of those traits over the past eight years to serve our country well. One of the most important traits of any President is judgment. And McCain’s decision in the first “important” judgment as a candidate showed a staggering lack of it.

yup we all need to be nicer and give this woman a good looking over just like we did for Obama—-remember they are all politicians and they are all millionares and they all have an agenda………….both sides….

Palin’s accomplishments seem to be limited to fighting corruption in Alaska which is a significant issue for Alaskans and explains her high popularity rating in the state. Corruption is a straightforward issue - you either break the law or you don’t. The main issues facing our country, e.g. the economy, Iraq, the healthcare crisis, etc. are not so straightforward.

Could you explain to me how firing a public official for refusing to illegally fire her former brother-in-law demonstrates “fighting corruption?” One thinks “fighting corruption” might begin at home. By the way, what is her relationship to Sen. Ted Stevens? Here’s some http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o46YdvT3lwQ info for you…. Way to fight corruption, Sarah!

WoW indeed! I stumbled right into a goldmine of great topics and discussions. I love this site…and I’m not even gay, Whoopi! Personally, I think Palin is very easy on the eyes which was probably a factor in their decision. However, I don’t think this whole thing will stick with the public because McCain’s main argument against Barack was that he doesn’t have experience, but now he picks a VP that doesn’t have experience…..can anyone explain that logic to me? Limbaugh likes her because she likes guns, is athletic, and is pro-life…strangest reasoning I’ve ever heard as far as political pre-requisites go. Anyway, congratulations for her, I’m sure she didn’t expect this at all a year ago. Doesn’t sway my vote though, but good stunt by the GOP. Thanks for the great blog Whoopi! You’re the greatest!

i am SO happy i have given all of you Democrat women something to spew venom about. Gosh, I didn’t know this was a gay site. Missed that. I don’t read the Obama emails I get, I delete them. And no, I wasn’t making a threat on Obama’a life, just stating what could eventually happen. I have the freedom of speech in this country just like every one of you do. I can say anything I want, whether you like it or not. I did not know WoW was for Democrats only. Must have missed that in the registration. If the people that own this site bounce me off, so be it. I thought this would be interesting to come to, read lots of opinions and have a discussion. And I think it is GREAT, WONDERFUL, FANTASTIC AND SO SMART OF SARAH PALIN to be PRO-LIFE!!! If some of you women want to stand by that it is a woman’s body, she can do with it what she wants, go right ahead and support murder of fetuses and babies. Have a precious night putting your head on you pillow and going to sleep. God has a reason for babies to be born that are aborted. Like having a life in this world and trying to make difference, just like you. If your Mother had aborted you, you wouldn’t be here right now, standing up for what you believe in, whether I agree or not.
