Whoopi Weighs in on Sarah Palin and Reader Comments on Her Obama Post!

Whoopi Goldberg

Well, as I’m watching television this morning, it appears that John McCain may pick Gov. Sarah Palin, of Alaska, to appease all of those angry women — the ones who were going to vote for Hillary and then threatened to vote for John McCain — by just picking a woman. It’s expedient, and should make everybody feel better. After all, what do women actually know? They’ll pick any female, as long it’s not a guy. That kind of thinking is so insulting I don’t know what to say.

I’m sure Sarah Palin (we’ll find out more information on her) is a wonderful woman, but if you’re a Democrat why would you go for a Republican female that you don’t know much about just because she’s female? Has John McCain missed the point? Or is that the point? That these angry women are angry because a woman was not picked … not Hillary Clinton … but a woman.

I looked at some of the comments to my Barack Obama post this morning and I thought they were fantastic. There was one lady who was irritated with me, I guess because I called Barack Obama an African American.

Well, normally one would say, "Well, his dad is African," as some of the other folks who were on the site pointed out and, "He is American," so that would make him an African American, in the truest sense of the word. The irritated comment was from Helen King. Well, Helen, he brags about his family but I’m sure he just wanted to make folks who were concerned about whether or not he could deal with white people feel better about the fact that half of his family is white. You know, so he’d be able to talk to white folks without freaking people out.

Helen said, "You never hear him brag about that." Well, in fact, he showed mama’s picture and grandmama’s picture and granddaddy’s picture quite a bit. We see pictures of his black father, but it’s kind of obvious he’s black, so he wants to let everybody know that he also has white in him. I guess in a funny way it means that he’s a well-rounded American. And just for the record, "African American" is cool, and although I do enjoy seeing the word Negro, one doesn’t generally say African Negro. One would just say Negro.

I do not think it is hate to be scared about having someone in the VP’s position (to a 72 year old Pres.) whose only experience is being Gov of Alaska for less than 2 years and prior to that mayor of a town of 6500. I think that is reality. I do think it is hate to continue to talk about Obama as a Muslim, when first we know that is not true and secondly, are we still in this country unable to see anyone but a Christian as President? I am a Unitarian and I know that a Unitarian would be scorned for Presidential office. Religion has torn apart this world for centuries, as has hatred. We need a new direction and if Americans cannot lead the way, then I do not know who can. I thank God for my 2 devout Baptist grandfathers who taught me that whatever someone”s religion was, or their color or their beliefs, they were humans and should be treated that way.

You know there actually is a sentence in Article Six of the U.S. Constitution that says there shall be no religious test for public office. But that is not why I am responded. I wanted to assure you that four Unitarians have been elected as U.S. President. See http://www.adherents.com/adh_presidents.html Maybe some idiot would question it if a Unitarian ran these days, but unfortunately there seem to be an abundance of idiots. Sometimes I think these “we are a Christian nation” people should just be told point blank that the Founding Fathers strenuously disagreed.

Judy, You will happy to know that we have had 4 Unitarian Presidents. John Adams John Quincy Adams Millard Fillmore William Howard Taft Thomas Jefferson listed as DEIST (sympathectic to Unitarianism)

What she has to say isn’t the point. Her minimal experience and her stances on choice and putting creationism in the schools and connection, yet again, to the Oil Industry through her husband, make her an unacceptable choice as the vp to an elderly man with health issues.

I respectfully don’t agree with Whoopi, Sara Palin is a smart, amazing woman. Please don’t take that away from her. I loved the way John McCain described her - She stands up tall when she needs to and doesn’t let anyone tell her to sit down. My husband always says that about me… John McCain is a good soldier who has good intentions. I only wish he could have beaten Bush the first time and didn’t have to wait 8 years. Don’t get confused by media driven misinformation. If we held the media accountable for their actions to only report factual information, the world would be a far different place. Hillary supporters will not vote GOP because they are disgruntled about Obama. She took care of that at the Dem. Convention is exchange for reducing her campaigned debit. She will now support her party as her debits are wiped clean. She and her husband should be ashamed of themselves. I am ashamed for her. Sara is in touch with America and a regular person. I love what she stands for and will continue to support her. I only pray the political process doesn’t disrupt her family. They will try and portray ugly stories- make them up if they have to. Does anyone else think Chuck Schumer is a huge Jack A_ _ ! He is VERY concerned about Sara’s lack of experience- only 3 years in politics and 2nd in command- has anyone told him yet that Mr. Obama hasn’t been around that long either? Someone buy this man a TV, Computer, anything- just get him to stop talking..

I think Chuck Schumer is great, he’s my senator..I follow him on the issues. Does anyone else think a mother of a 5 mo old might make a very distracted VP? what does it tell me about her family values?? mommy’s career is more important

I don’t really know if this fits in here, but I liked it. J.A. Jance, the novelist, said her Arizona mother used to say, “You can lead a horse to water, but you can’t make him drink—but give me time with that horse, and I can make him thirsty.” That is the Western and Alaskan crusty attitude. I don’t know—I thought it was funny. Maybe after 13 yrs in AZ, I am losing my cherry blossoms and picking up some prickly pears.i

Oh Whoopi, I couldn’t agree more!! Should be the example given in the dictionary next to the word ‘pander’. I was sorry Obama did not have Hillary as VP but he still gets my vote :)

Last night I received a call from a Republican friend (how one can be dirt poor, gay, & Republican never fails to astound me, but I digress), who was certain that I, & all others who voted for Hillary in the primaries, would switch our vote to McCain simply because his handlers chose a V.P. who has the same reproductive equipment I do. I cannot begin to tell you how offended I am by the arrogance & utter contempt McCain & the rest of the G.O.P. has shown for women by thinking that we would ignore the fact that Ms. Palin & Hillary are polar opposites on many issues, & that we would mindlessly vote for McCain because his running mate has a vagina.

There is something being left outof the conversation Sarah Palin. Am I the only on that has noted that NO ONE has talked about her education. I googled it and she has a batchelors degreefrom University of Idaho in journalism with a minor in political science. No advance degrees- I have said for years there needs to be a job description for these job with a basic lst of degrees and postgraduate education. All other federal jobs have the education requirements posted-the top jobs need it also. thanks Terry

How about McCain’s education. He practically flunked out of college, graduating near the bottom of his class. And he still doesn’t know how to use the internet? He is so last millennium, it is terrifying.

I was listening to Think Tank on PBS earlier, when I heard Mark Twain being quoted on American imperialism. So I went to look at his original writing, called “To the Person Sitting in Darkness,” which is a satirical piece about the U.S.“adventure” in the Philippines. Read on and when you hear McCain/Palin talk about our country’s involvement in Iraq, you may wish to bring it to mind: “… There have been lies; yes, but they were told in a good cause. We have been treacherous; but that was only in order that real good might come out of apparent evil. True, we have crushed a deceived and confiding people; we have turned against the weak and the friendless who trusted us; … we have invited our clean young men to shoulder a discredited musket and do a bandit’s work … we have debauched America’s honor … but each detail was for the best. We know this. … This world-girdling accumulation of trained morals, high principles, and justice, cannot do an unright thing, an unfair thing, an ungenerous thing, an unclean thing. It knows what it is about. Give yourself no uneasiness; it is all right.”
