Whoopi Weighs in on Sarah Palin and Reader Comments on Her Obama Post!

Whoopi Goldberg

Well, as I’m watching television this morning, it appears that John McCain may pick Gov. Sarah Palin, of Alaska, to appease all of those angry women — the ones who were going to vote for Hillary and then threatened to vote for John McCain — by just picking a woman. It’s expedient, and should make everybody feel better. After all, what do women actually know? They’ll pick any female, as long it’s not a guy. That kind of thinking is so insulting I don’t know what to say.

I’m sure Sarah Palin (we’ll find out more information on her) is a wonderful woman, but if you’re a Democrat why would you go for a Republican female that you don’t know much about just because she’s female? Has John McCain missed the point? Or is that the point? That these angry women are angry because a woman was not picked … not Hillary Clinton … but a woman.

I looked at some of the comments to my Barack Obama post this morning and I thought they were fantastic. There was one lady who was irritated with me, I guess because I called Barack Obama an African American.

Well, normally one would say, "Well, his dad is African," as some of the other folks who were on the site pointed out and, "He is American," so that would make him an African American, in the truest sense of the word. The irritated comment was from Helen King. Well, Helen, he brags about his family but I’m sure he just wanted to make folks who were concerned about whether or not he could deal with white people feel better about the fact that half of his family is white. You know, so he’d be able to talk to white folks without freaking people out.

Helen said, "You never hear him brag about that." Well, in fact, he showed mama’s picture and grandmama’s picture and granddaddy’s picture quite a bit. We see pictures of his black father, but it’s kind of obvious he’s black, so he wants to let everybody know that he also has white in him. I guess in a funny way it means that he’s a well-rounded American. And just for the record, "African American" is cool, and although I do enjoy seeing the word Negro, one doesn’t generally say African Negro. One would just say Negro.

Speaking of pandering, I couldn’t get through 10 minutes of the GOP, too much elephant dung. I’m writing tonight on my blog about the need for courage in the united states, if you need to clean your pallette…. www.mugsypeabody.blogspot.com

Apparently, McCain assumes we women vote with our vaginas, which is impossible in New York on account of we still have those curtains to pull back and then there are all those levers…..

Gal, You made me laugh. There was a tv show-Ally McBeal that tlked about men thinking with their dumb stick. I am so not willing to give up on men. Whoopi, do you think men are really so shallow as to think any old woman will fit the slot? Sarah Palin is completely oppostie in her positions on everything Hillary stood for—-and we will soon enough learn ALL about her. Just when I thought politics was going to be an intelligent debate on the issues……………. Please oh please somebody in the media— WHOOPI HELP US—— drive the topics BACK to fair education( my son is in Teach for America in a school that was inable to attract science teachers), available health care(my 85 yr.Mom cannot afford to have her teeth fixed), bringing our soldiers home( have a nephew in Iraq), finding ways to become energy independent, and not economic playthings for the uber-rich. (foreclosures abound here where I live—causing divorce, alcoholism and yet-a gambling casino just opened down the road—to stimulate the economy——but man oh man -a nother choice of addiction here we come!.) But, on the bright side. Whoopi and you,B gal thanks for the chuckle. I needed one. :)

Yes, and do you realize in this country the whole environment, energy, oil issues have been going full circle? In the 70’s we (the nation) were going to clean up the air - environment, (some of that has actually happened) be energy efficient, begin using more solar energy, and more… my frustration, (obviously) when is all this REALLY going to happen? Thank goodness there are some individuals who actually have utilized more efficient forms of energy, vehicles and more - we just need to get our great, big corporate, groupies to take on the changes more seriously. If only I had been given lots of $$$ instead of, (or as well as) beauty and brains! lol I do have a lot of ideas flooding my poor brain - the best I, or any of us can hope for is someone who is willing to put our ideas to good use, with their huge amounts of capital. So… anyone with lots of money want to talk with me about some of my ideas - I’ll be happy to discuss them. I have thus far, passed on some of my ideas to one of my State Senators - Barbara Boxer. I don’t expect any magical response and instant change because of them, I do hope someone will make use of them. I was one of the first to begin discussions of utilizing wind energy - way back in the late 70’s - mid - 80’s. Also, a great magazine which I used to read; “Mother Earth” - had plans on how to develop\build a small single family home with mud and straw and old, used rubber tires. Great insulation too! We have so many gifted, bright people to create all kinds of structural designs and energy efficient plans for building - and more. Just a bit of “FYI” thanks - Ro

The idea that women are going to race off to vote for any candidate with the same internal plumbing is both offensive and historically wrong. When the sexes have parted company in modern elections, it’s generally been because women are more likely to be Democrats, and more concerned about protecting the social safety net. “The gender gap traditionally has been determined by party preference, not by the gender of the candidate,” said Ruth Mandel of the Eagleton Institute of Politics. The above from Gail Collin’s piece in the Times today which I thought of when I read your post, Gal, (I think yours is funnier). It’s heartening to realize a lot of women feel this way.

Whoopi . . . Hurrah to you for saying in a few short words: It was not a woman, McCain, you silly thing, it was Hillary Clinton. And then - when his campaign decided it had to be “a woman”, it took himself and his future right off the edge of the cliff with his choice. Doesn’t that alone give you shivers over the competence of his staff - his vetting committee — the person who should have took him by the arm days ago and said: John, NO WAY! It is a game of politics in politics, but like another game - poker - it took the turn of a wrong card and John lost the game. But didn’t it look - just a little bit - like he had already lost his mind to not have made a better choice?? I dig you, Whoopi!

And what a game, joan. Is it possible another shoe will drop? Can’t say this hasn’t gotten everyone’s attention. Hi Whoopi :-)

I think this pick is insulting to women. This woman’s views and her lack of qualifications make her a polar opposite to Hillary Clinton in everything except gender. And choosing an anti-choice, unqualified woman doesn’t make up for John McCain’s terrible voting record on women’s issues. Also, I think it says a lot about John McCain’s character that he would choose a person with no real qualifications to be president merely because he wants the job at all costs and thinks pandering to women and the far right fundamentalists will help him get it. At 72 he should be choosing a person who has the background and qualifications to be president if he becomes unable to finish his term. Choosing the mayor of a small town of about 9,000 and the governor, only a little over a year, for a state with the population of San Francisco, and no foreign policy experience is a careless choice, IF you care more about the good of the country than winning an election.

explanation… by saying “he would choose a person with no real qualifications to be president merely because he wants the job at all costs” I realize that’s a confusing statement. I know he hasn’t chosen her to be president, but the VP’s qualifications to be the actual president must be foremost in the choice, certainly before pandering and political expediency. Especially for a 72 year old candidate.
