Whoopi Goldberg: Sarah Palin 'Is a Very Dangerous Woman'

Whoopi Goldberg
I just have to talk about Sarah Palin’s speech a little bit. She gave a really amazing speech, very strong, very strident and it gave the Republicans everything they wanted to hear. They know that she’s a tough chick and she’s a babe and she’s a mom and all those other wonderful things we should be celebrating — the first time I think we’ve ever celebrated all of these things in a woman. Maybe Hillary Clinton wasn’t such a babe but she was defiantly strident and strong and people lost their minds and said how rough she was and how male she was, but I guess if you do it with a smile it makes it a little easier.

But here’s my point, I thought the speech in its body was energizing for Republicans, as I said, and sent them the message they wanted to hear, but what I heard was a lot of meanness and snideness and some inaccuracies and some dismissive talk to community organizers and other people’s adversities. She sort of mentioned the idea after Rudolph Giuliani did — and Rudolph Giuliani is a bonehead to start with, but that’s neither here nor there — but I thought once she began her discussion about community organizers and that they don’t have real responsibilities … I guess I can’t say I don’t know where she’s been living, because she’s been living in Alaska and maybe they don’t have community organizers there but they do in Chicago. Anyone who leaves their gig from school and goes to the people who most need help, that seems to me an admirable American way of thinking. It used to be in America that you helped people if you could, you organized them you made sure their rent was paid, made sure they had heat and all those other things and that helps to build character. If you want to become a politician you can at least say, "I understand how people live, I understand what happens when people lose everything and this is how we can work on it."

I also found it really bizarre when Palin said there was only one person who has fought for your rights, dismissing Joe Biden’s work offhand. She then said some politicians have talked about their light adversities, and I thought, “What are you talking about? Are you talking about being a black man in America? That’s a light adversity? Or maybe the fact that Joe Biden lost his wife and baby daughter and nearly lost his two sons — that wasn’t adversity enough? Do you have to be left in a box in Vietnam to count for something?" If that’s the only kind of adversity that counts then she’d be right.

I also thought that this idea of America first coming from her was kind of strange because she was one of the people who wanted to secede from the United States. She was part of a campaign to secede Alaska from the United States of America. So I’m glad she’s back, putting America first. I also thought it was disingenuous for her to open with her record on the Bridge to Nowhere. When she was running for governor in 2006, she was all for the bridge and once she won she was against the bridge, this was also a woman who wanted books banned. I just find it extraordinary. She feels that her governorship qualifies her to be the VP. She has no foreign policy experience, she doesn’t have very much experience with anything but Alaska, and being governor, as we know, is not necessarily a carte blanche to being president. We just came through eight years with former Gov. Bush and that didn’t work so well.

So now we come to this other thing that I don’t understand: The idea that her daughter’s pregnancy is a family affair makes absolute sense to me because I think that it is a family matter. But I find it interesting that if this girl was Chelsea Clinton or black she probably wouldn’t have been treated the same way. When a black teenager gets pregnant she’s a welfare mother. When this teenager, when this nice white-lady-girl-teenager gets pregnant, it’s an Evangelical Christian choice. She’s unwed, and so how do we balance that? I guess the spin is the way to do it. We’re also sort of sitting around and listening to people talking about the anti-female aspect of this. I don’t think this has been anti-female at all. If anybody can talk to having anti-female bias at all, I would think it would be Hillary Clinton.

There was a feeling I had today that it’s no longer about who’s qualified — and I guess maybe it’s never been about who’s qualified – because, truly, nobody is qualified to be president until they’ve been president. Because it’s one thing to run a town or run a state that has some people in it, but it’s not a big city. It’s not like New York. Maybe there are great qualifications that you have for that, but in the United States of America, if you’re going to be president or vice president you’re supposed to be able to look at these things and say, "What’s best for the country?" Not, "What do I think my religious beliefs are?" Because you can only live with your own religious beliefs; you can’t ask other people to bend to them. So I find the spin a little tough to take. I find the spin tough to take having gone through this myself, with a young daughter who got pregnant. There is no privacy, there is no family issue here. This is about spin. And what I wanted her to say was, “This was not the way I hoped this would be. This is not what I wanted for my daughter, but this is the choice she has made.” But I guess if you say that this is the choice that she has made, you have to say that choice is important. Maybe it’s me, maybe I misinterpreted everything she said, but I don’t think so. Though we shall see. We shall see what John McCain has to say and what Sarah Palin has to say and, as time goes on, we’ll find out really where she’s coming from. I think it’s going to be a whole new kettle of fish.

Hi Angel … I can relate to your question. As a young child (I’m 60+)my parents taught that at some family gatherings there are topics that are better to avoid (politics and religion were on my family’s short list). Specifically topics you know will cause a ruccus and ill- will. I have a large extended family and there are many POV’s. Make an effort to maintain civilized conversation during the gathering. If something controvertial starts to disintigrate the spirit of the gathering, don’t get pulled in and allow someone to push your buttons. Sometimes, in order to diffuse the building tension, it works to say to the folks, “I’m interested in learning more about your opinions and information resources … let’s get together (at another time) so we can continue this conversation. As for finding information about Palin, the internet offers a vast resource. Also, wowOwow is a great starting point. Many of the blogs offer links within the body of the response/statement. It is important to conduct your research with an open mind, weigh the pros and cons. A person needs to be objective. I find it helps to stick to searching for information that can be validated. The more you read, the more likely it is that you will be able to develop a realistic opinion. Happy searching

I am so glad I read these two postings by Goldberg and Stewart! After reading the current polls, (but then remembering the previous polls and the results), I was sick to my stomach with panic. I thought I was the only one that was scared of this woman and of her determined mushing forward with blinders on. Thank you for validating my gut reaction to her. Around this town, I don’t talk politics!

All of you need to read the information provided to us from a fellow Alaskan, Jackie S. Her comments can be found at the” wowOwow Reader Forum: Governor Palin Addresses RNC”. Her list is long but seems to be heart felt and well thought out. This is the real information that will help ruin McCain and be the possitive issue basis for the Democrats and undeceide voters. Let us all stick to the issues and win this election for the Democrats and the American people who need to be the central concern.

Some of you on this blog are so catty I can’t even believe any of you can be educated women! Have any of you actually looked up anything to see if it is true or not? Or are just spouting out what you have heard on the street? Little miss Gala Girl – I suppose you read and believe all the crap in the supermarket rags? That so called affair Ms Palin supposedly had - was invented by the National Enquirer and was grabbed up by ignorant people with nothing better to do than circulate garbage. Do you believe in the 90 year old woman giving birth to her twin too? Whoopi – I am very surprised the racist qualities you are displaying! A teenage pregnancy is a bad experience for everybody concerned – I find it offensive that you suggest that only if a girl is black and pregnant do people look down on her. That is just crap! I think what people look at is their actions – if they are acting responsibly given the situation – not what color their skin happens to be! Also, if you check it out about the “bridge to nowhere” you will see that she did think it was a good idea at first until she found out more about it. Then she decided the Federal grant could better serve the people by improving on other Alaskan infrastructure – and by the way, why is Obama making such an issue out of this when both he and Biden voted for this “bridge to nowhere”! Where do some of you get off in saying she doesn’t have any experience? She has actually run government offices! What has Obama run – besides his mouth! Some of you on this blog need to grow up and do some research!

D.Palm, Since you have brought it to our attention about growing up, looking up information, experience and so for on. It is clear that your views are as bias as the next fellows. To be calm and assert one’s self, especialily about political views, can be hard for some of us. Senator Obama has a lot more experience than Gov. Palin. A senator from a federal level as well as the state conducts a lot more business than a Governor from a state with a small population as well as a small electoral college base. Besides, her views are not in line with majority of Americans and their everyday needs.

Donna, You are not one I was referring to with my comments. However, I think you are wrong when you say Gov Palin’s views are not in line with a majority of Americans - I am curious as to why you would say that? A woman who juggles a family and work, who stands up for what she believes? Don’t many of us juggle children, home, family, and work? And fight for what we believe in? I may not agree with all of her views either but I believe her reputation precedes her as being honest and hard working - Why are elected officials better suited for the White House if they live in Washington or Chicago in a position where they have learned to “play politics” - than a widely respected governor of Alaska? Convince me why Obama is a better choice -

Regardless how you vote ,and vote you should , it is my sincere hope that women do not vote for Mrs. Palin because she is a woman. In the latest ABC poll, it was revealed that if one were to vote on issues, one would elect Obama/Biden, but if one chooses physical attributes over issues, then one would vote for McCain/Palin. Seriously, shouldn’t we elect the leadership based on the issues and how these are addressed by either party? I am aghast that many women have decided to throw support McCain’s way because he chose a female. That is wrong on so many levels and does nothing to further the cause of equality, in my opinion.

D. Palm, It seems to me that you have not been listening for the past 18 months or so. Many women and men do not favor Mrs. Palin’s views. She seems to be the distraction in the eyes of the media at the moment with issues that are not on everyone’s mind. Healthcare, the economy, jobs, the war in Irag( which is also an economic issue), care for the elderly, education and the rising costs of a college education, immigration and having corpoations have too much goverental control in Washington. Senator McCain is running for President for the (R) and Obama is for the (D). They have supporting VP’S each, Palin(R) and Biden(D). The concern that must of us have about Palin is her lack of the real issues and it would be very very scary to have her be President should anything happen to Senator McCain. There talk is cheap and dirty because that seems to be what the Republicans do best. It seems you really need the facts from a fellow Alaskan. Read Jackie S. comments on “WOWOWOW regarding Palin’s speech.

Although Sarah Palin is running for VP, due to McCains age she should be looked at very carefully for she may become president. I don’t want her to make decisions about my personal life based on her religeous beliefs. I don’t care about her having affairs or her pregnant teenage daughter. I want the truth about all the allegations. And they are not all false. — Straight talk -she did not sell the jet on e-bay- and that is not Inquirer talk. There are so many women both Republican and Democrat who would make a great role model for our daughters as president but it is not Sarah Palin. I don’t think she can keep our families safe- Obama can answer the 3:00am call.

Come on folks. If Senator Obama’s daughter was pregnant at seventeen years old, trust me, it would matter to some Americans. Why would it matter you may say? It’s the elephant in the room which most people do not like to discuss. But rather act on their beliefs silently. It’s because Senator Obama is black. Some people say they will vote for a black person but when they get in the voting booth they choose the white candidate. In addition Karl Rove is managing Senator McCains campaign whether anyone care to admit it or not. So another eight to sixteen years of BUSH! So just like Senator Obama has repeatedly said, another eight years of Bush is enough! Senator McCain has been in office for 26+ years, and he will not take care of the social issues working class folks are facing today, i.e., the economy, gas prices, jobs, foreclosures, health insurance, social security etc. But what Senator McCain will do for us is bring on more unjust WARS. Bomb, bomb, bomb, bomb, bomb IRAN. Think it out folks. Think about the issues. John McCain has voted against working class issues the entire time he has been in the Senate. Just check his record.

Whoopi- Why must you spread vicious lies about Governor Palin? She was NOT a member of the group that wanted to secede, she NEVER banned any books, etc. I stopped reading your article because it was so stupid and inaccurate!!!!! Anderson Cooper disppelled several of your lies on his show last night. When will the far left stop lying and actually debate the issues???
