Whoopi Goldberg Reaches Out to Readers

Whoopi Goldberg

I’ve been reading — and it’s taken me a long time to figure out how to work this doggone computer,  I’m not very good at it — the various comments that have been made on the wOw site especially to things that I’ve said I believe. One of the greatest things I want to tell you is I appreciate everybody’s support. Some things that I read, though, kind of distressed me — like a response to something that I had written by Joanne Selle and Marjorie C., talking really about the black issue — the fact that I brought up race when talking about Sarah Palin’s daughter.

I said I thought if it had been one of Barack Obama’s daughters as opposed to a very nice young white lady it would have been a different response. Well people took to the fact that I made the differentiation by saying a white lady or a white girl and that made the discussion about race. Let me be really clear: You cannot tell me in this country — when you put a white girl next to a black girl and they’re both pregnant — that people are not going to say, “Well, she’s going to end up on welfare.” Or people are going to make those kinds of remarks that we’ve heard made, by the way, over the last 10 to 15 years; at least I have. And maybe it’s because my child got pregnant very early on that I have a distinctive feel about this. My daughter was talked about very differently than other people at the time, and maybe it’s because she was the child of a famous person. I don’t know. But to say that doesn’t come into play is ridiculous. To say that it is using the race card seems very strange to me. It’s an observation about a truism in the United States. They would have been treated differently. Would they have treated Chelsea Clinton the same way they’re treating Sarah Palin’s daughter? I don’t know. It hadn’t occurred to me until this moment that maybe they would have said the same thing about Chelsea Clinton, that she’s young and we have to stand beside her and it’s nobody’s business. Maybe they would have said that. I don’t think so, really, in my heart of hearts, but maybe they would have.

We are always going to disagree about certain things because that’s the nature of human beings. We don’t all think alike, we don’t all talk alike ...

Maybe you have to take a look, and my using a black and white description was not valid. I’ll take that. But I do take offense to Joanne and Marjorie talking about how black people want everything given to them, and how people of color are bitching about the fact that they didn’t get enough from Katrina and how when it happened in Iowa nobody like Oprah or anyone else did concerts for them. I do want to point out to you that I find it interesting you did not refer to the fires in California. Remember the fires in California? Where suddenly the government swooped right in there with money for different communities? Or other natural disasters that have happened — like Florida. You didn’t mention those where the government swooped in. I don’t think you’re accurate, Joanne, in saying that no one helped in Iowa. I don’t think that’s true at all. As a matter of fact, I know it’s not true.

You know, it totally undermines your opinions when you attack people with such unecessary venom. And by the way, why would the example Whoopie sets emabarass an entire race of women. She represents one person. She is a successul, opinionated, courageous, creative, hard working mother and grandmother that has perservered regardless of sterotypical road blocks whether it be race or gender. If that’s not normal for any woman, what is? We AA women are as diverse in life experience and opinion as are any other group of women. So please, stop trying to silence people with judgemental and shallow statements.

I agree, Whoopi is a comedian, not a great thinker. And she’s lazy! Obama lineage is not foreign policy experience. My children are of mixed heritage and lived in a foreign country, and don’t know a darn thang about foreign diplomacy! Foreign Policy experience is somewhat overrated seemingly Cheney, and Rumsfield were touted as experts! Truman, Kennedy, Johnson, Carter, Clinton, Reagan, and Bush had virtually no foreign policy experiences. Face it, foreign policy expertise is on-the-job training. Kennedy instigated a war, Johnson escalated a war, Truman dropped the atom bomb then got us into the Korean War. However, governors have more direct responsibilities when it comes to managing land, people and budgets. Obama raised money to fix the Chicago school system but like his community organizing, it fell flat as well. I’m not a McCain/Pailin supporter but it seems she has more hand-on experience at these type of task. It doesn’t matter the size of the town or state to assess the problem and seek resolutions. After all Chicago, Philly, DC, Detroit, LA are no role models for small town mayors. Oftentimes managers gain experience at small companies to prepare for their leadership duties at major corporations. We know for certain Whoopi, Joy, Elizabeth and most definitely air-headed steppin fetchit Sherri Shepherd has no foreign policy experience. Sherri thinks the world is flat…abandoned her special need child for a year in pursuit of a career at the View should not question anyone’s capabilities. Damn, how did she get that job anyway with all the experienced talented women (black, white, Asian, Latino, Native American) on the planet, what a waste? Whoopi’s daughter have three babies out of wedlock? Where was the feminist mother’s spiel on birth control? It is unfortunate that Hillary was eliminated as well as Kinnich. Perhaps we should have the primaries then let the convention be used to give us a second look at the candidates. Obama accusing Palin of no experience is like the kettle calling the skillet black. From a black woman who will vote green party.

And you know what, Suzanne? Today, apparently, McCain is leading in the polls. Scary thought. And, I bet you are thinking what I am thinking.

Diana, I heard that too. It is a scary thought especially on the same day that George Bush reported signed documents instructing that the withdrawal of any of the 100,000-plus troops in Iraq cease until after the next Administration takes over the White House. I SAY, WHAT?!?!?! It isn’t bad enough that they are there at all? So now it’s going to be dump the economy and ‘your’ war on the next Administration, George? Okay, here’s the glass half full for me…the Democrats are going to win the white house and GWbya knows it. He will have no legacy so he may as well sabotage the incoming with as much as possible. Or, the glass half empty and he really doesn’t like John McCain and believes that he deserves to be left with ‘the war’, the economy, healthcare, and you name it. Either way it is pretty mean-spirited and at the price of the American people. Whoopi, I’m sorry I did not read the thread you have written about. You stated your exception to what was said extremely well. Thank you! So for anyone who reads this, I mean ‘at the price of ALL the American people.’

Suzanne, I am not sure if you saw it yet, but I posted Eisenhower’s warning to us way back in 1961 about the danger of the Military Industrial Complex. And, now it is a reality. Thank you for your courage of saying what needs to be said. This trend does not happen overnight and suddenly, it evolves over time. And for those who are not familiar with history and who are not curious or refuse to learn, they do not see it coming. Upton Sinclair said in 1931: “When Fascism comes To America, it will come wrapped in the flag and carrying the Cross.” I always say Knowledge is Power. I also say, beware of what you ask for, you might just get it…

WOW ,Diane…I found this a powerful quote: Upton Sinclair said in 1931: “When Fascism comes To America, it will come wrapped in the flag and carrying the Cross.” I was just thinking today..we should be very wary of politicians who claim some special connection to God! And use it to get elected.

Anam, I don’t think most people remember Harry Truman saying Beware of the man in the amen corner. Book censoring, homophobia, demeaning the work of intellectuals and artists, dumbing down the population, encouraging complacency, anti-semitism and blatant racism, we’ve seen it all before, notably in the 20th century. Read your history and learn from it. Knowledge is power.

thank you, Diana, for that…I didn’t know that quote…but I agree..Knowledge is power..I think too many people are making up their mids based on “20 second sound bites”…there is always more to learn….I think I will be quoting you on this to others!!

Well see there’s the problem you were “THINKING”. How hopelessly out of fashion. Anam…it seems the message went unheeded. Fascism eliminates the need for both thought and education. Ah… the sweet comfort of ignorance. Eats away the brain much faster than any drug ever could. Please never stop THINKING. Think on this site. Think out loud…to other people. Maybe you can bring THINKING back. Thanks

well, I did more than think today..I got some HS kids to think! I was subbing in a journalism class..they were comparing Palin speeches..I got to tell them a bit more about McCain and his contradictions…gave them some sites to check….and I told them…if you are 18 or have friends who are..register to vote!

Oh so you’re against mental laziness in our young people too…And you’re encouraging honoring civic responsabilities like suffrage. Absolute madness…where will this lead? Be careful we may end up with people who are educated voters expecting competent leadership from government officials. This could start a dangerous trend involving discipline, awareness, and character strength. We could end up better. Then what would happen to mediocrity? Any student of yours is fortunate beyond measure…Never stop. THANK YOU!

would love to make more people think..however if my email and news reports are to be taken into account…I am worried..seems people prefer to spread and believe lies see this link http://www.nytimes.com/2008/09/12/opinion/12krugman.html?_r=2&hp&oref=sl… And McCain can look you right in the eye and lie….and people will buy it but, Margo, I will keep trying…
