Whoopi Goldberg Reaches Out to Readers

Whoopi Goldberg

I’ve been reading — and it’s taken me a long time to figure out how to work this doggone computer,  I’m not very good at it — the various comments that have been made on the wOw site especially to things that I’ve said I believe. One of the greatest things I want to tell you is I appreciate everybody’s support. Some things that I read, though, kind of distressed me — like a response to something that I had written by Joanne Selle and Marjorie C., talking really about the black issue — the fact that I brought up race when talking about Sarah Palin’s daughter.

I said I thought if it had been one of Barack Obama’s daughters as opposed to a very nice young white lady it would have been a different response. Well people took to the fact that I made the differentiation by saying a white lady or a white girl and that made the discussion about race. Let me be really clear: You cannot tell me in this country — when you put a white girl next to a black girl and they’re both pregnant — that people are not going to say, “Well, she’s going to end up on welfare.” Or people are going to make those kinds of remarks that we’ve heard made, by the way, over the last 10 to 15 years; at least I have. And maybe it’s because my child got pregnant very early on that I have a distinctive feel about this. My daughter was talked about very differently than other people at the time, and maybe it’s because she was the child of a famous person. I don’t know. But to say that doesn’t come into play is ridiculous. To say that it is using the race card seems very strange to me. It’s an observation about a truism in the United States. They would have been treated differently. Would they have treated Chelsea Clinton the same way they’re treating Sarah Palin’s daughter? I don’t know. It hadn’t occurred to me until this moment that maybe they would have said the same thing about Chelsea Clinton, that she’s young and we have to stand beside her and it’s nobody’s business. Maybe they would have said that. I don’t think so, really, in my heart of hearts, but maybe they would have.

We are always going to disagree about certain things because that’s the nature of human beings. We don’t all think alike, we don’t all talk alike ...

Maybe you have to take a look, and my using a black and white description was not valid. I’ll take that. But I do take offense to Joanne and Marjorie talking about how black people want everything given to them, and how people of color are bitching about the fact that they didn’t get enough from Katrina and how when it happened in Iowa nobody like Oprah or anyone else did concerts for them. I do want to point out to you that I find it interesting you did not refer to the fires in California. Remember the fires in California? Where suddenly the government swooped right in there with money for different communities? Or other natural disasters that have happened — like Florida. You didn’t mention those where the government swooped in. I don’t think you’re accurate, Joanne, in saying that no one helped in Iowa. I don’t think that’s true at all. As a matter of fact, I know it’s not true.

I feel we’re losing the focus here. Not all white girls who become pregnant as teens become homecoming queens anymore than black girls who become pregnant as teens are sluts. Some of us are generalizing a little too much. Personally, I’m happy for this discussion—as tough as it’s been for many, it is revealing in that women of all colors (and Frank, of course!) honestly and sincerely step forward and say these things out loud. Okay, so there is a level of anonymity, but not much. I suspect that the day will come when young Bristol Palin will look back on all of this and wonder what the hell her parents were thinking. I believe that the young Johnson boy will be long gone. Statistically, these kids do not stay together, often suffer abusive relationships and split.

you have utterly failed to see the forrest from the trees. Mrs>Palin was picked to be on that ticket only because she is a woman, and her family situation.in case you have been living under a rock, women across this country are mad as hell because they wanted hillary on that ticket. the republicans thought a. find woman b, find woman with unusual family situation.c. find damn good speech writer d.swing those pissed off women over to my side. this is like a side show at the circus, it occupies you while you wait for the big show. white, black, purple it makes no difference. why in the hell would the powers that be allow the media, and ANY 17 year old girl to be paraded around the country to get votes, or try to say hey, we are not so conservative, look at the pregnant girl, not at who the best person would be to get us out of the big fat mess we let “Tumble Weed Bush” get us into.I.E. This was the name given to our president by the cia and fbi when his daddy was vp.Bonita, it is not about being homecoming queen or living on mars. it is about as women are we going to fall for such utter stupidity that the republican party are trying to sale. if you believe what they are selling, i have a bidge for sale, across the pond.

Amy! We’ve already covered that turf about Governor Palin being a pawn, and all that. Were you dissin’ me? :) I’m on your side on this one…I’ve said since I got on this godforsaken website that HILLARY WAS DONE IN BY HER OWN PARTYTHE MENS! Okay?

i am not dissing you, but to say that society does not judge white, black or hispanic people according to race or color, on the same exact issue is the point i am trying to make, as I thought that was the comment made by Whoopi. That had Chelea Clinton been 17 and pregnant, would the same comments have been made about Whoopi’s daughter as the white Chelsea clinton.that is what i was talking about. listen, i live in rural South Carolina, and I see in my community the way judgement is passed. poor people, get one, rich get one white get one, black get one, hispanics get one they all differ.why should it matter? it does not change the fact.but all these people should be treated the same in the same circumstances and they are not.

Whoopi, thanks for this post and for your willingness to reach out to readers. Perhaps there is something positive to be said about the race and gender cards being right out there on the top of the table during this election. At best, it gives us an opportunity to examine our hearts and minds.

Whoopi- I was shocked to see Elizabeth Hasselback - bashing Michelle Obama at the RNC luncheon for Cindy McCain. She used private info from the View- John McCain is not the man he used to be and Sarah Palin could be president. Republicans have started a war between intellectuals elitetist and the “common folk” no thought just straight talk- “my friend” I am working for you. I will reach across the isle - I know how to get things down after I through out the bush people. That seems to be as specific as John McCain needs to be . after all he is leading in the polls. Do you feel safe now?

Thanks Amy! I was just chomping at the bit to say something and you did it for me. Hilarious. That friggin’ prescription drug-addicted gasbag. I actually heard him say on the radio the other day that he was “doing this (i.e. being on the radio) for the sake of humanity”. God help us, a ton of people listen to that jerk and actually agree with him. Thanks for the laugh!

Bonita , do not worry. I can not tolerate that ignorant intolerant dumb arrogant jerk.i can and i will put him in his place every chance i get. he preaches this and calls others that, all the while he is buzzed up on narcotics spewing his hatefilled words across the air ways and people listen to him. and someone pays him to talk. why????the best thing he could do for humanity is to shut up..go home, and stay there .Bonita, we may have been seperated at birth..At last some one who will say what they think, you are refreshing, and i like you.

Well, Amy (can I use the big “A”?), we may have been seperated at birth. Although I doubt it. However, you will be flabbergasted to know that I, too, live in South Carolina. As I said in my original post, it is jerks and hate-spewers that are throwing us all off! We need to stuff our ears with socks and follow our consciences and instincts. But wow, so many people love this fat a*hole and others like him. Anyway, I’m going to do double-duty here and respond to your other post to my post about Chelsea Clinton, white girls, black girls, pregnancies, etc. Oh God yes, I agree with you 100% about “one gets this, and one gets that”. But as an alleged white person (my parents are Italian but you probably already guessed that), I have been treated badly by blacks in state positions or other positions of authority and, I am sorry to say, just about all of them have been women. That just floors me! So, yes, this bigotry is a two-three- and four-way street. Probably more. The laws are written for all of us dammit. The Constitution doesn’t say, “right to bear arms…except for the following groups: blacks, latinos, mentally ill…” Right. We are all supposed to be painted with the same brush under the law. However, if you can’t get ordinary people to be decent to one another on the street, in the store, at the DMV or in school, how in the WORLD do we think we can get our leaders to properly (I would underline that word “properly” if I could) interpret and enforce those laws when we can’t even be polite to each other? This is where the beauty of division steps in and throws us all off the balance beam. We are being cowed into these fighting positions. Am I the only one that sees this? I like you back. You made me laugh and, phew, some of these exhanges have really knocked me for a loop. As far as saying what I think? Sooner or later it gets me into hot water…but I do try to be fair. “Life’s not fair!” I can hear someone say that…well, MAKE it fair.
