Whoopi Goldberg Reaches Out to Readers

Whoopi Goldberg

I’ve been reading — and it’s taken me a long time to figure out how to work this doggone computer,  I’m not very good at it — the various comments that have been made on the wOw site especially to things that I’ve said I believe. One of the greatest things I want to tell you is I appreciate everybody’s support. Some things that I read, though, kind of distressed me — like a response to something that I had written by Joanne Selle and Marjorie C., talking really about the black issue — the fact that I brought up race when talking about Sarah Palin’s daughter.

I said I thought if it had been one of Barack Obama’s daughters as opposed to a very nice young white lady it would have been a different response. Well people took to the fact that I made the differentiation by saying a white lady or a white girl and that made the discussion about race. Let me be really clear: You cannot tell me in this country — when you put a white girl next to a black girl and they’re both pregnant — that people are not going to say, “Well, she’s going to end up on welfare.” Or people are going to make those kinds of remarks that we’ve heard made, by the way, over the last 10 to 15 years; at least I have. And maybe it’s because my child got pregnant very early on that I have a distinctive feel about this. My daughter was talked about very differently than other people at the time, and maybe it’s because she was the child of a famous person. I don’t know. But to say that doesn’t come into play is ridiculous. To say that it is using the race card seems very strange to me. It’s an observation about a truism in the United States. They would have been treated differently. Would they have treated Chelsea Clinton the same way they’re treating Sarah Palin’s daughter? I don’t know. It hadn’t occurred to me until this moment that maybe they would have said the same thing about Chelsea Clinton, that she’s young and we have to stand beside her and it’s nobody’s business. Maybe they would have said that. I don’t think so, really, in my heart of hearts, but maybe they would have.

We are always going to disagree about certain things because that’s the nature of human beings. We don’t all think alike, we don’t all talk alike ...

Maybe you have to take a look, and my using a black and white description was not valid. I’ll take that. But I do take offense to Joanne and Marjorie talking about how black people want everything given to them, and how people of color are bitching about the fact that they didn’t get enough from Katrina and how when it happened in Iowa nobody like Oprah or anyone else did concerts for them. I do want to point out to you that I find it interesting you did not refer to the fires in California. Remember the fires in California? Where suddenly the government swooped right in there with money for different communities? Or other natural disasters that have happened — like Florida. You didn’t mention those where the government swooped in. I don’t think you’re accurate, Joanne, in saying that no one helped in Iowa. I don’t think that’s true at all. As a matter of fact, I know it’s not true.

That Eisenhower speech is so great. And what makes it especially important is that it is being given by an ex-general, and that it is all happening just as he warned back then. My husband is from Ireland and when I was there just after our 2006 election, I was talking to an uncle of his who is a retired accountant, about the election and my positive feelings at the time because the Democrats had won the majority, tiny as it is. He said, nothing is going to get better because the US is a war machine and that our entire economy revolves around our military industrial complex.

DeB, All one has to do is to read history. Cycles go over and over and over again. While we have had the most democratic society in the history of the world, I wonder if we are squandering it with our mediocrity, lack of knowledge, lack of participation and general complacency. What is it going to take for us to strive for perfection again like we were doing as recently as a generation ago?

In order for democracy to work you must have well informed and educated citizens. (and I don’t mean all high degrees, but a good foundation of education) We have neither. My parents didn’t even graduate high school and they new more about history, our political system and the current events of their time than most people I meet everyday with MBAs. And what passes for media these days is disgraceful.

DeB, My Dad, even though he was a successful business man here, made it to the 11th grade, got mad at his dad because he couldn’t join the high school band, and marched off to Parris Island to join the Marine Corps. Boy, he was going to show his dad! But, he was well versed in the arts and by the time I was 3 yrs. old, I could name all the instruments in the orchestra and knew who Mozart was, he read and re-read Will Durant’s complete History of Civilization many times, and taught us that we must know as much as we can until we breathe our last breath. My son-in-law, who holds a masters from VA. Tech., didn’t even know where Afghanistan is and the reason it has been fought over for millenia. True learning does not necessarily mean a lot of degrees.

DeB, I forgot to also say that one can be learned and not have wisdom.

Suzanne; Thank you! For so many years I have felt so all alone! I did not realize there were others who could actually SEE the Forest for the Trees! For nearly 6+ years I have been beating down the doors, berating congressional Staff, wearing out my computer keyboard, and spewing over the telephone wires my distaste, disdain, and discontentment regarding this administration! I have been dredging up the same basic points you have written so eloquently for us, and most likely I have worn out my welcome with Congressional Staff - by being, I suspect, their “most frequent caller.” I have in many cases, become known on a first name basis, to the state senator’s staff. I have a strong personality, anyway - so, when I start sputtering my anger and angst at them, I suspect most, if not all staff regret answering my frequent calls! (<— This is written mostly in jest) The point simply being that I do indeed take my citizenship VERY seriously. I am not willing to lay down and play dead when my liberties are being threatened! AND - most of all, I continue to remind them and MySelf - they all work for US! So… I am interested in having you share some of your ideas about defeating the monster! However, I suspect it\they are watching and reading everything! Good grief… and, I thought most people in the USA were smarter and brighter, and more patriotic, and… ???? This is precisely why the Neo-cons have been so damned effective! The News Media either doesn’t have a clue! or, are just playing it safe, or have already sold out! What say you?

Is it naive to believe that, if most of the people in this country had more than a high school education, we would not be tolerating the destruction of the greatest democracy the world has ever seen? Step 11 is where it all begins to fall apart. The critical thinkers are vilified, while the sheep are made to feel good and noble. I checked out that link you supplied. I have shivers running down my spine.

No Kill and Drill Palin
Well if Whoopi doesn’t like Caribou Barbie…..how about Trojan Moose. That’s the headline on Huffington Post today. She’d hiding the fact that McBash-Palin are four more years of the same. Today when the dim bulb was spewing the canned talking points in Colorado Springs she went off course when didn’t know the heck what Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac do. That’s great. And she tried to conflate herself and McBush with middle class problems and values. Insane. Hello? Highest Unemployment Rate In Five Years… Housing Debacle… Broken Military… The Taliban are the Comeback Kids..A War that’s gone on longer than WWII..Nuclear threats from all comers… Global Warming/Lack Of Healthcare/Energy Policy… Demolished Education. Jobs Shipped over seas. No healthcare. These—and so much more— are all the result of Bush so called ‘policies’ that McBush voted for 90-96% of the time depending on which year. THE ABOVE is McBush’s record that Palin attempted to deflect by saying “we are you….we feel your pain” etc…..yeah. In which of his 12 houses and with which of his $300K a year household staff, and with his $100M wife, and his Senate healthcare…where is it that he feels the pain??? And where does Miss Airhead that doesn’t even know what Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae do get off defending a record that a decent person would crawl away from ashamed. These people have hubris up to the stratosphere. Why. Because they knowthe GOP Sheeple question nothing. They can come out this this absolute total BS and like trained seals they will wave their placards and applaud. How many smart people celebrate their own demise. truly incredible and beeeeeeezzarrrrre.

Hey Whoopi, I remember when the Press were all over you about your daughter’s preg. they were unmerciful……. I know it must have been so painful for you and her. By the Way I really can’t understand why THE VIEW was allowed to be used as a commercial for McCain and Palin………..especially Elizabeth showing her T shirt at the end and trying to sell them. I notice they didn’t have any of you Democrats go and cover the Democratic Convention. I thought Barbara did not voice her preference in partys……….. Maybe Bill’s a Right Wing Republican….. It must have been hard to swallow today while all her cutsy stuff was being shown………. It turned my stomach. I wish I lived close enough to come and see you and Joy this weekend. I love both of you……………

I find the View to be a joke. It is a bunch of insecure, unattractive, unhappy women that complain alot. They have no expertise in anything. I am not sure why you people act as if they do. Whoopie is an embarrassment to African American women. She has a chip on her shoulder and does not have any class. She is uneducated and never looks into the facts before she speaks. She is always saying something stupid. Try using your own brain for a change and stop following stupid celebrities and taking their opinions as if they are God. Celebrities have no expertise in anything in general. They can’t even relate to normal people. They are uneducated but for some reason rich. They do not relate to you. So you should get a life and stop wasting your time on this joke of a blog

tedyz - Perhaps you should stop wasting your time here. Your opinions concerning the women on The View , “insecure, unattractive, unhappy women that complain alot,” are, fortunately, not shared by thousands of viewers. The women you refer to, with the exception of Elizabeth Hasselbeck, have had years of successful careers. It is interesting that you call them “unhappy” (how would you know?), and “unattractive” (your opinion only). But when you start attacking Whoopi (learn to spell her name correctly, please) and throwing around adjectives like “uneducated” and “stupid” you are completely crossing the line. All you do is expose your own ignorance, and your own insecurity and unhappiness. The people who blog here may not agree with one another all the time, but they do know the rules of civility. Apparently, you do not.

To Whoopie, I am an African American women and I wanted to let you know that your comments/treatment of Senator McCain were inappropriate on 9/12 at the View. For you to infer he would bring slavery back and that he was a racist was ignorant. You are an embarasment to African Americans and to women. You need to get some class or educate yourself if you are going to represent us on TV. Sen. McCain deserves more respect from you ladies. You, Joy, and Barbara come across as very unhappy, sexless, insecure bitches. You sabotaged Senator McCain and you did not do the same to Mr. Obama. You practically kissed Obama’s butt in addition to his wife. Sherry and Elizabeth showed class and treated him like a guest. You have absolutely no class. Your purely guetto. I do not understand why you women are allowed to express your views on national TV. You are uneducated and do absolutely no research before you open your mouth. You can not relate to normal people. I would like to see you debate common people from the streets. You would be out debated. I can’t wait until they cancel your show or fire you like Rosie and Star. It is coming. I will celebrate.

Thank you so much for your eloquent and insightful words. I am simply blown away by how lyrically you represent yourself. I believe that the correct title Is Senator Obama. But I am sure that was merely an oversight, since you are so obviously a respectful, thoughtful human being.

Wow, what a classless, ignorant way to express yourself!
