Whoopi Goldberg Reaches Out to Readers

Whoopi Goldberg

I’ve been reading — and it’s taken me a long time to figure out how to work this doggone computer,  I’m not very good at it — the various comments that have been made on the wOw site especially to things that I’ve said I believe. One of the greatest things I want to tell you is I appreciate everybody’s support. Some things that I read, though, kind of distressed me — like a response to something that I had written by Joanne Selle and Marjorie C., talking really about the black issue — the fact that I brought up race when talking about Sarah Palin’s daughter.

I said I thought if it had been one of Barack Obama’s daughters as opposed to a very nice young white lady it would have been a different response. Well people took to the fact that I made the differentiation by saying a white lady or a white girl and that made the discussion about race. Let me be really clear: You cannot tell me in this country — when you put a white girl next to a black girl and they’re both pregnant — that people are not going to say, “Well, she’s going to end up on welfare.” Or people are going to make those kinds of remarks that we’ve heard made, by the way, over the last 10 to 15 years; at least I have. And maybe it’s because my child got pregnant very early on that I have a distinctive feel about this. My daughter was talked about very differently than other people at the time, and maybe it’s because she was the child of a famous person. I don’t know. But to say that doesn’t come into play is ridiculous. To say that it is using the race card seems very strange to me. It’s an observation about a truism in the United States. They would have been treated differently. Would they have treated Chelsea Clinton the same way they’re treating Sarah Palin’s daughter? I don’t know. It hadn’t occurred to me until this moment that maybe they would have said the same thing about Chelsea Clinton, that she’s young and we have to stand beside her and it’s nobody’s business. Maybe they would have said that. I don’t think so, really, in my heart of hearts, but maybe they would have.

We are always going to disagree about certain things because that’s the nature of human beings. We don’t all think alike, we don’t all talk alike ...

Maybe you have to take a look, and my using a black and white description was not valid. I’ll take that. But I do take offense to Joanne and Marjorie talking about how black people want everything given to them, and how people of color are bitching about the fact that they didn’t get enough from Katrina and how when it happened in Iowa nobody like Oprah or anyone else did concerts for them. I do want to point out to you that I find it interesting you did not refer to the fires in California. Remember the fires in California? Where suddenly the government swooped right in there with money for different communities? Or other natural disasters that have happened — like Florida. You didn’t mention those where the government swooped in. I don’t think you’re accurate, Joanne, in saying that no one helped in Iowa. I don’t think that’s true at all. As a matter of fact, I know it’s not true.

Why is it that pure ignorance is spread like wild fires and the truth is usually contained? Whoopi you keep doing what you do-we are listening, I admire your thoughtfulness and truthfulness and your bluntness and your not afraid to tell it like it is. Now my only gripe is that sometimes I wish you would push back a little more to stop the hate that EH spin(my opinion) when you ladies are talking politics on The View, but for the most part you do a GREAT! job, keep up the work that you do for All. OH and if you can reply and tell me what was that comedy show you had when you were running that hotel I thought that show was hilarious wish it would have stayed around longer

Ms. Whoopi, honestly, please, I implore you from the bottom of my socks. Ask your friend EH on The View (if you can duct tape her mouth for a minute): 1. Why do you think what you are trying to say is more important than what I am trying to say? 2. Why do you think you are more important than I am? 3. If you don’t think those things, why are you shouting when I am trying to talk? 4. What is it I am trying to say that frightens you so much that you can’t just sit there and listen to me rather than trying to stop me from talking? I seriously would like to hear what she has to say about that. And that’s pretty much the ONLY thing I would like to hear from her.

LOL Mugsy, When I was reading your questions, I couldn’t help but think of the “church lady” from SNL. After she had posed all her quasi-rhetorical she would answer with a last question could it be — satan. I would like to see EH squirm while answering spirtual questions to a non political-minister. One of the hellfire brimstone breed who only had one agenda saving your soul — and maybe a chicken dinner now and then :) .

For the life of me, I don’t understand why people listen to these fools, really, I don’t. In my little Peet’s coffee shop in the morning, when someone starts in with some of this twit stuff, the papers are folded, the coffee picked up, the chairs scraped back. Nothing even needs saying. Just shut them off, you know? As I said, the only use of The View is keeping Whoopi’s body and soul together. Otherwise? Not so much.

I should probably shoot myself for wasting my own precious time on this, but I just did a little internet research on Ms. Hasselbeck because I wondered what her awesome credentials were and how they propelled her to her current spot on The View. Seems she was a runner-up on Survivor, she was a judge for The Miss Teen USA Pageant, and then for a year she was a host on The Look for Less. As far as I can tell, that’s it. My question is, Whoopi, could I audition for The View, please? Because, even though I’m not Survivor loser, my resume is a lot more meaty than Elizabeth’s.

This is a totally great idea, Maurine on The View! How can we make this happen?

I think Elisabeth was as qualified to host a TV show on women’s views as Palin is to be VP of The United States of America. And look what a bang up job Elisabeth has done. The only people that tune in to watch her are the types we saw in the audience at the RNC. Everyone else has dreams of her running into a human sized bug zapper.

Dear Whoopi — I think you can explain until Day turns into Night again and again and there will be those who don’t get the overt AND covert racism that exists in this country. Yet, as a black person (I like being called black, too), I’m not so eager to hold onto being pissed off about it. I work around it, over it and sometimes through it, but I’m not going to be controlled by other people’s stupidity. I also agree with you about the Republican convention. Sorry, but it didn’t look or sound like America. It looked and sounded like people who wouldn’t mind me cleaning their house or cooking their food. The majority (vast and almost total) of people at the convention were white. And I live in Texas, so I think half of them were from my home state. Still, I’d like to know what makes for good dialogue? Today I saw a rerun of your conversation on the View and noticed that Elisabeth got a little testy over a remark you were making about race. I believe that she wants a world that is equal. I recognize that, but I also know that she made disparaging remarks at an event that shows me that white people don’t say the same things around other whites that they do in diverse situations. At least I can say this about Whoopi —- what you hear is what she is going to say to everybody else. And that is the what I respect and admire.

Perri- . Whoopi tries to see all sides. I am sure it takes courage for her to speak up. We have so much pressure on the news media. The right wing conservatives seem to be more organized - they have control of the media even though they continue to say the media is biased. The view provides at least some balanced discussion on the days Whoopi can keep Elizabeth under control

So why is it the little twit can’t keep HERSELF under control?

Hi Diana, Just curious about something. What is this considered? Frank- The UK Indepedant had a good article last weekend about the US Culture war between the backwoods, rural “red-states” [as a mindset more than a geographical location] and the educated ‘blue’ urban areas that economically support the nation. We make the money, we pay the most to support the government, and the Christian Nazi McCarthism Gun Nuts from the Alaskan outback are the ones who help decide policy by supporting the GOP against their own interest. The GOP as a tactic understood it couldn’t win without bringing the religious wackos into their tent would help them. It’s a sham in service to the oil companies and multinationals with the Ditto Heads clamoring to help rich people line their pockets at a cost to their own schools, infrastructure, jobs, etc. Bobby-Jo with his ‘57 faded-red pick-up, with the gun rack, confederate flag, bloodhounds and Jerry Falwell/Rush blasting on the radio with their racist/zenophobic/misogynistic spiell—can’t put gas in his car and eat too, but by gum-it…he’s a “God-fearin’ ‘publican jest like maw daddy and his daddy.” Bobby-Jo supports oil barons in their private clubs with their helicoptors and Lear Jets and multi-million dollar mansions around the globe. Like McCain, with his $300K annual tab just for the help. But because they put on a lapel flag pin and read off a Macivellian script the DittoHeads fall in line and vote. Just like in the Dark Ages. Creationism and God talk has always made those who can’t think for themselves, who can’t connect the dots between speech, actions and results in their own lives…the enslaved tools of the richest 2%. They think the GOP politicans care for them…they are laughing all the way to the back. And if their limo accidently mows down one of their constituents as they beat it out of town. Gosh, that is sad. Where’s my free lunch? By Suzanne de Cornelia on 09/08/2008 1:50 pm I just shake my head on this.No one has called the author on this post.So I guess selected bigotry is ok.
