Whoopi Goldberg Reaches Out to Readers

Whoopi Goldberg

I’ve been reading — and it’s taken me a long time to figure out how to work this doggone computer,  I’m not very good at it — the various comments that have been made on the wOw site especially to things that I’ve said I believe. One of the greatest things I want to tell you is I appreciate everybody’s support. Some things that I read, though, kind of distressed me — like a response to something that I had written by Joanne Selle and Marjorie C., talking really about the black issue — the fact that I brought up race when talking about Sarah Palin’s daughter.

I said I thought if it had been one of Barack Obama’s daughters as opposed to a very nice young white lady it would have been a different response. Well people took to the fact that I made the differentiation by saying a white lady or a white girl and that made the discussion about race. Let me be really clear: You cannot tell me in this country — when you put a white girl next to a black girl and they’re both pregnant — that people are not going to say, “Well, she’s going to end up on welfare.” Or people are going to make those kinds of remarks that we’ve heard made, by the way, over the last 10 to 15 years; at least I have. And maybe it’s because my child got pregnant very early on that I have a distinctive feel about this. My daughter was talked about very differently than other people at the time, and maybe it’s because she was the child of a famous person. I don’t know. But to say that doesn’t come into play is ridiculous. To say that it is using the race card seems very strange to me. It’s an observation about a truism in the United States. They would have been treated differently. Would they have treated Chelsea Clinton the same way they’re treating Sarah Palin’s daughter? I don’t know. It hadn’t occurred to me until this moment that maybe they would have said the same thing about Chelsea Clinton, that she’s young and we have to stand beside her and it’s nobody’s business. Maybe they would have said that. I don’t think so, really, in my heart of hearts, but maybe they would have.

We are always going to disagree about certain things because that’s the nature of human beings. We don’t all think alike, we don’t all talk alike ...

Maybe you have to take a look, and my using a black and white description was not valid. I’ll take that. But I do take offense to Joanne and Marjorie talking about how black people want everything given to them, and how people of color are bitching about the fact that they didn’t get enough from Katrina and how when it happened in Iowa nobody like Oprah or anyone else did concerts for them. I do want to point out to you that I find it interesting you did not refer to the fires in California. Remember the fires in California? Where suddenly the government swooped right in there with money for different communities? Or other natural disasters that have happened — like Florida. You didn’t mention those where the government swooped in. I don’t think you’re accurate, Joanne, in saying that no one helped in Iowa. I don’t think that’s true at all. As a matter of fact, I know it’s not true.

Tom, although your question was addressed to Diana, I am going to try to explain something about this to you. First of all, it’s one woman’s opinion. This is an open forum. There could be a couple of reasons why no one has “called” the author on it. One, it didn’t inpsire enough to commnet. Two, many are familiar with the poster and understand that this is how she feels. We may not like or condone or agree with comments or positions but that’s the way it is. Although there have certainly been moments of discomfort between people posting here, it is not a moderated thread like the BBC. As to the “selected bigotry” comment, you said that and, although there may be some truth to that, I must again remind you it is one woman’s view. NOT calling a person on their opinions means nothing here. We read, we process, we learn. Sometimes we agree and sometimes we don’t. And there are even times when we skip posts!

I guess that is the difference between us.If I see a bigoted or racist remark I call someone on it.It has been interesting.

We Need Obama/Biden
I am just curious…has anyone seen the outrageous new McCain ad stating that Obama voted for a bill that would teach sex education to kids in kindergarten? This is unbelieveable, even for the right wing! What the bill was designed to do was educate small children to the dangers of sexual predators. I know that my grandchildren have been presented with a program called “Stranger Danger”, which I think is wonderful, because, while they have been alerted to this great danger, not all of their classmates may have been. This latest attack has gone beyond what even I thought was possible from John McCain. This totally untrue inference is scandalous and everyone should make sure that the McCain campaign is aware they have totally gone beyond the limit of what is decent in our society. Now they are using the danger to our children/grandchildren as a ploy to attack Senator Obama….it is shameful! To those of you who may think he did not approve this ad….he gives his usual “I’m John McCain, and I approved this ad” at the end. Where has the honor in this man gone…is he that desperate to win?

How do you know when McCain’s lying? Is his mouth moving? Where is the real John McCain and what have they done with him?

Mugsy and all, John McCain is a very, very ambitious man. You should read something about him in an autobiography he wrote. He is the son and grandson of Navy admirals who were intolerant, gung ho, and all-Navy. He did not want to be a part of that but was cowed into it for the sake of the family name and its honor. He’s got something to prove to himself. Yes, Senator McCain suffered horribly at the Hanoi Hilton but so did many, many other men. Some of them never made it out alive. Senator McCain was essentially made the poster child of the VN War when the government finally began to recognize those vets—just ask any solider or sailor who served in that war.

Yes, Bonita, a thoughtful comment, and John Kerry who was an honest-to-god war hero? Look what the neo-cons did to him. They don’t give a damn about the vets. But McCain is useful to them. Sad situation.

Writers don’t view their comments often times as bigoted or racist. Tom I think what you are saying is that only right wing comments are challenged and the bigoted remarks of the liberal in your view go unchallenged. You are free to challenge the writer if you like.

Ah, I remember the good old days a few months ago when John McCain PROMISED he would never run a dirty campaign with underhanded, inaccurate attack ads. Guess that was just one more lie he told the American people.

Lies that Palin and McCain are telling go on. -. Why would women be taken in by a woman that is intent on getting rid of free speech and imposing her religious beliefs on the country. There are few unbiased stations left and the right wing opposition against NPR is mounting, Some of the internet information is exaggerated about Palin. Some things have been proven to be true. She asked about banning books in the Wasilla library. She fired the librarian and hired her back aftter protest from the town. Since the list of books can not be verified. - does not exonerate her wanting to ban books. . She is no ordinary hockey mom.

Hi Whoopi, I’m so glad you decided to join ” The View “. A strong woman who listens is exactly what the show needed. I also can appreciate that Barbara,Joy, Sherri, Elisabeth and yourself can exchange passionate opinions, while at the same time trying to present the facts, that the opinions are based on. No easy task. I’ve had discussions with many(over 1000) people about the upcoming presidential elections. For the most part, I just listen. There are three things that amaze me: 1) Many people are passionate about what they believe 2) What they believe for the most part is not based on fact 3) They are frustrated with the mainstream media providing them with controversy and not educating them about the issues and full disclosure of fact. Yet many of these people still base their opinions on the mainstream media. I ask these people if they have ever heard of politifact.com and to my surprise only a couple of people have. When I mention it, they thank me and say they’ll check it out. It is an independent fact checking site, that also references other independent fact checking sites. They can check the site and make their own decision, based on full disclosure of fact. The mainstream media does not provide this full disclosure of facts. They feel that reporting and analyzing on semi-discloure of facts will help create controversy. In turn, this will drive viewership. In turn, this will drive ad revenue. Bottom line, they generate $, not education for the American people. How often do you hear the mainstream media mention politifact? It would be nice if people were educated with the facts. I have a suggestion for your show. Since all of you seem to talk daily about the upcoming election, what if on Monday’s, Elisabeth was to select one of the politifact topics for that day and on Tuesday’s, Joy was to select one of the politifact topics for that day and on Wednesday’s, Sherri was to select one of the politifact topics for that day and on Thursday’s, you were to select one of the politifact topics for that day and on Friday’s, you all propose a topic and then vote on(your own version of Congress) which one will be discussed. Then if the topic is being posted for the studio and home audience to view, everyone is looking at the same thing. No Filtering! People get the facts, get to listen to your opinions and then make up their own mind. Keep voicing your different opinions, we all learn that way. Just a thought from an average American who thinks this presidential election means something.

John McCain is a hypocrit!! He has used the lipstick pig phrase too!! From the AP…The lipstick maxim is hardly new to either Obama or McCain. The Democrat has used it in the past, and McCain repeated the folksy metaphor when he criticized Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton on health care. McCain was never accused of being sexist when he uttered those words. On Tuesday, Obama criticized McCain’s policies as similar to those of President Bush, saying: “You can put lipstick on a pig. It’s still a pig. You can wrap an old fish in a piece of paper called change. It’s still going to stink after eight years.” The McCain campaign immediately jumped on the comments, arguing they were directed at Palin, the GOP’s first woman on a presidential ticket. In her acceptance speech last week, she had referred to herself in a joke about lipstick being the only difference between a hockey mom and a pit bull. Accusing Obama of “smearing” Palin in “offensive and disgraceful” comments, the McCain campaign demanded an apology. The McCain campaign on Wednesday issued an Internet ad that said Obama was talking about Palin and said of Obama: “Ready to lead? No. Ready to smear? Yes.” Obama’s campaign has accused the GOP camp of engaging in a “pathetic attempt to play the gender card.” The campaign noted two other instances of McCain using the phrase “lipstick on a pig” and its use by other Republicans such as House Minority Leader John Boehner and Arizona Sen. Jon Kyl.

Sunny, McCain seems to have lost his honor to the radical right; I guess he has forgotten what it was like when GWB used this campaign method against him in 2000. I just heard that Obama’s lead in Michigan has gotten smaller….still leading but not by as much. They said the reason is that they haven’t heard the kind of message they want to hear from him with regard to helping the struggling state. My question to that would be….what the heck are they hearing from John McCain that is even comparable to what Obama has proposed on the economy….absolutely nothing! Where are people’s heads at? I really am starting to believe what Bill Mahrer said….that “the American people are too stupid to be governed by an intelligent leader” (not exact quote but close enough) ! I was so glad today when Senator Obama did not apologize for the “it’s still a pig” comment. When I heard he was going to speak about his education policy at a school and address the issue of the comment, I was so hoping he would not apologize for a comment that John McCain has said more than once about Hillary. Thank goodness, he did not!

As Mugsy would say, “red herring city”. Here we are again, mud wrestling about the stupid pig/lipstick bit. Are we two-year olds here, or what? I had to turn off the news on the way home, it was making my brain turn into melted glacier. Am I the only one who sees the madness of us bickering amongst ourselves over schoolyard insults? I’m ashamed of us. God help us for real.
