Whoopi Goldberg Reaches Out to Readers

Whoopi Goldberg

I’ve been reading — and it’s taken me a long time to figure out how to work this doggone computer,  I’m not very good at it — the various comments that have been made on the wOw site especially to things that I’ve said I believe. One of the greatest things I want to tell you is I appreciate everybody’s support. Some things that I read, though, kind of distressed me — like a response to something that I had written by Joanne Selle and Marjorie C., talking really about the black issue — the fact that I brought up race when talking about Sarah Palin’s daughter.

I said I thought if it had been one of Barack Obama’s daughters as opposed to a very nice young white lady it would have been a different response. Well people took to the fact that I made the differentiation by saying a white lady or a white girl and that made the discussion about race. Let me be really clear: You cannot tell me in this country — when you put a white girl next to a black girl and they’re both pregnant — that people are not going to say, “Well, she’s going to end up on welfare.” Or people are going to make those kinds of remarks that we’ve heard made, by the way, over the last 10 to 15 years; at least I have. And maybe it’s because my child got pregnant very early on that I have a distinctive feel about this. My daughter was talked about very differently than other people at the time, and maybe it’s because she was the child of a famous person. I don’t know. But to say that doesn’t come into play is ridiculous. To say that it is using the race card seems very strange to me. It’s an observation about a truism in the United States. They would have been treated differently. Would they have treated Chelsea Clinton the same way they’re treating Sarah Palin’s daughter? I don’t know. It hadn’t occurred to me until this moment that maybe they would have said the same thing about Chelsea Clinton, that she’s young and we have to stand beside her and it’s nobody’s business. Maybe they would have said that. I don’t think so, really, in my heart of hearts, but maybe they would have.

We are always going to disagree about certain things because that’s the nature of human beings. We don’t all think alike, we don’t all talk alike ...

Maybe you have to take a look, and my using a black and white description was not valid. I’ll take that. But I do take offense to Joanne and Marjorie talking about how black people want everything given to them, and how people of color are bitching about the fact that they didn’t get enough from Katrina and how when it happened in Iowa nobody like Oprah or anyone else did concerts for them. I do want to point out to you that I find it interesting you did not refer to the fires in California. Remember the fires in California? Where suddenly the government swooped right in there with money for different communities? Or other natural disasters that have happened — like Florida. You didn’t mention those where the government swooped in. I don’t think you’re accurate, Joanne, in saying that no one helped in Iowa. I don’t think that’s true at all. As a matter of fact, I know it’s not true.

I haven’t time right now to read through the entire thread, so I don’t know if anyone else has brought this to light. But all the brouhaha over Obama’s “lipstick on a pig” statement is laughable. John McCain used the same analogy when talking about Hillary Clinton’s health care plan. See it for yourselves : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WMPYkNQlJMM Just one more bit of hypocrisy by the Republicans who are now piling it up so high it’s going to be taller than the Tower of Babel

Whoopi!!! I totally get what you said about Elizabeth. I really liked her, did not always agree with her, but liked her until she started being a mouth-piece for Fox News (seemingly). Why has she been allowed to get by with her snide and mean comments at the RNC about Michelle Obama? Why no talk about it at The View table? What was she insinuating? Instead of the stealth (or “in your face”) meanness, why wasn’t she honest and upfront with her accusations against Mrs. Obama? And, why doesn’t she say these things on The View? Perhaps, because she knows you will keep her honest? I love the way you handle people who may not agree with your views—you are gracious and smart and I am trying so hard to follow your lead with friends/family! Keep it up and I will keep studying under Prof. Goldberg!!

Moc, The reason she makes snide comments about the Obamas, Michelle mostly is she’s allowed to and just maybe because she has more Seniority than Whoopie, but seriously she’s and Undercover Racist with a decent smile and bleached hair, it really is like putting Lipstick on a Pig, it’s still a Stinking Pig@ the end of the day, when Michelle was on she pretended to care about her since they both have small children, AND I PROMISE U THIS MICHELLE KNEW,REMEMBER SHE BOTH PRINCENT&HARVARD SO U KNOW SHE DEALT WITH ALL KINDS OF SMILEY RACIST PEOPLE, now HASSELBECK’S daddy&mommy McCain is on the show tomorrow, she’ll be as happy as a Pig wallowing in his SLOP. PEACE

BS! Whoopi overtalks Elizabeth and sometimes in a very condescending way. Elizabeth is just as young an idealistic as any young liberal woman. As Elizabeth matures and feel the sting from life’s turbulents, she will become more sagacious. And I’m no friend of Elizabeth…much toooooooooooo conservative for my existence to be considered relevant. But I like to listen to young people who are liberal, conservative and otherwise. Whoopi is not as well read as she tries to come off. She’s a favorite amongst whites because she is non-threatening and isn’t known to be entrenched in black culture (inspite of the locks). Obama multicultural family doesn’t give him a corner on the market of knowing the issues that affect others who are black, Asian or African immigrant. He has only lived as an African-American in the last 20 odd years. He lived in Indonesia as a child and could not have possibly analyze the culture and politics of that land at his young age. I have many militaryt brats as friends who traveled and lived in many countries from childhood to teen years who they think his touting his mix race and living abroad background as absurd! He never lived in Africa where day to day survival can be rough, having to go without clean drnking water or have his village raided by rebels and his sisters brutually rape. Although he married a black American, he has never walked in our shoes. In fact it seems his social and cultural experiences has been filtered through the lens of white privileged. He speaks of his grandfather military experience under General Patton well my grandfather served in a segregated army! My grandfather was denied access to jobs in and out of the military that only white soldiers could obtain. His grandmother without a college education (through hardwork of course) was able to rise to the position of a vice president of a bank whereas no matter how hard my grandmother and mother worked did not have the same opportunity. First he told the world he grew up with a grandmother who uses racial slurs and afraid of black men because of one incident at a bus stop. Now he praise her for shaping his life. It seems everything this man has done has been by designed. Why go to Chicago when he could have worked for a grassroot organization in New York? He saddled up to Reverend Wright whom I respect because of his outreach work in the southside community in Chicago. He wanted street credibility so he hungout there for twenty years until he got caught! Was he so in loved with Michelle or in love with what she had to offer with all her brilliance and connections. So he made $12,000 as year…my income wasn’t too much more of that in 1981. I don’t trust him… if he should become president…the sun will come up in the east just as it did with eight years of Bush; and we will continue to suffer either way because we did not select the most qualified candidate, Hillary.

I listen carefully when Whoopi and Elisabeth, respectively, speak. They stay on point, without making sarcastic or crude comments for a laugh. Why isn’t the Asian community represented on The View? I agree that Elisabeth should not have mentioned Michelle Obama’s “off-limits list” outside the workplace. (I expect that she has regrets for letting that cat out of the bag.) However, now that we know, is there anything on the list that could affect our vote on November 4th? Have the McCains submitted similar lists to The View? Overall, I support full disclosure during presidential elections.

I’m like to make a point about this “pig in lipstick” comment the repulican’s are so up in arms about. The face is the first time we heard the term in 2008 is when Sen. Mc Cain said it about Sen. Clinton’s plans on the economy. Why haven’t someone spoken up on this face. Look it up PLEASE! I got the chance to watch you on TV today and never heard anyone bring up this point, so I searched all day to find some were on the Web that I could ask you, Whoopi if you know this or could you look into it but, he did said it first this year and to a woman.

ni hao (hello in Chinese) Whoopie, there are times when I read your articles and the response you get from people who do not understand were you are coming from is a pity. Unfortunately they have not lived the same life as people of color, so they lack a part of understanding human reality and themselves, pity. One comment someone said is as old as I am….Blacks always want something to be given to them, I don’t think so. We only want fair justice and equal opportunities that was taken away since slavery. Why do America have double standards and talk about human rights violated in Tibet. Human rights in the USA do not exist because of the political power games, the average hard working class always try to hide the truth rather than resolving issues. Another issue you stated regarding people in the country thinking America is so great, I think they really feel great knowing they are the only people living alone away from colored people’s. Truely the mind set of this society is sick…and as my favorite African proverb says ” A leopard can not change its spots”. It seems American history has proven that correct, pity them.

Mr. Thomas, what you said! I am an alleged white woman (Italian, really) and I hear you. My grandmother, who was born in Luxembourg used to say that very thing about the leopard never changing its spots. We’re probably related! :) Don’t give up. There are plenty of people out here who get it that are not of color. Keep the faith.

Well if it was Obama’s 17yr old she would be labeled a “baby momma” and he would NOT have been the nominee 1st things 1st, so end of story, he would not have gotten past first base…In this country RACISM IS VERY MUCH ALIVE, if you are WHITE IT’S ALRIGHT, IF you are BLACK GET YOUR —-BACK,just look@it, they rolled out Palin’s daughter and then fly the baby daddy in, McCain shakes his hand as if he’s a Head of State& shoved this image down a great number of narrow minded Americans throats and have called this the best thing since APPLE PIE, NOT TO MENTION THIS WOMAN WASNOT EVEN VETTED”, HAD OBAMA DONE THAT PLZZZZZZZZ, he’s already had a microscope up his behind since his announcement to run,no other candidate has ever been subjected to the amount of NEGATIVE ATTENTION AS OBAMA………NEVER, AND WE ALL KNOW WHY…..I just wish that Sen.Obama would stick to the issues and keep reminding us of the state that we are in NOW under the present administration and do we want to be SCREWED AGAIN BUT NEXT TIME WITH A “JACKHAMMERFOR 4MORE YRS IF SO THEN WE REALLY DON’T WANT TRUE CHANGE JUST MORE OF THE SAME DRESSED UP WITH GLASSES & A 2PC SUIT AND A SQUEAKY VOICE.

Wow Mrs. Cheryl Hampton, you sound pretty strong on your position. I have to agree with you. I wouldn’t have put it quite the way you did maybe, but I sure got the idea! And you’re right. However, I have to disagree on the “microscope” thing…Eugene McCarthy, Bill Clinton, George McGovern, Michael Dukakis, John Kerry, Jimmy Carter, Al Gore…oh, look…they’re all Democrats! What a coincidence! They were all torn to shreds publicly and every inch of their private lives was strewn across the land-whether it was true or not didn’t matter. What mattered was the right winning. Period. End of story. You are completely right, Mrs. Cheryl Hampton.

Cheryl….Oh, how I agree, especially the part about her voice; it is really starting to “grate” on me. I would like to know how it is that any other vice presidential candidate would have had to face reporters by now, but they are treating her like she is made of glass…what happened to that whole “BREAKING the glass ceiling” thing! Nothing, expect attacking her family, should be off limits; the press is so afraid of looking like they are attacking (thanks to Karl Rove politics) that they are just steering clear. When does the public get to ask her some “real” questions….let some women do it!

I just heard on CNN a few minutes ago that you, Whoopie had called Palin a very dangerous woman. I couldn’t agree more. The more I learn about this overpaid cheerleader, the scarier she gets. While there is nothing wrong with belonging to a religion; our constitution provided us that ability, and nothing wrong with being a person in political office as well…..fueling your political ambitions and attempting to run the train to the White House on religious coal is very very wrong. I have not only NOT seen any evidence that Palin could effectively run this country if needed, indeed the thought of someone, woman or man who has tried to have books pulled from library shelves and declared that drilling is “God’s will” is enough to tell me that if there were not myriad reasons enough to vote Obama……..Sarah Palin is a very big reason.

I think whoopi has some great points… I feel really uneasy having sarah palin run for VP.. I think alot of woman that are supporting her are blinded right now by the newnest and her charm.. they don’t know her record and don’t care.. and that is very dangerous… her views are extreme ..despite the GOP trying to save her image. IT is just a heartbreaking idea.. and for McCain to set our country up with this.. it is scary.

I would like to know how Elisabeth Hasselbeck can actually be upset with Matt Damon for giving his opinion on the McCain choice for VP, and put down celebrities for giving political opinions when she can be so two-faced as to interview Michelle Obama and then make such scathing comments about her at the RNC?? To anyone who hasn’t seen this yet, check out this video… and Whoopi, please tell me if Barbara Walters has made any statement about it: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/09/10/elisabeth-hasselbeck-rips_n_125…

Mz. Whoopie….yes, yes, yes. You are splendid - and always able to get your thoughts in order and make a deep impression. I wish I could do that. The election always seems to bring out the worst in people. Everyone can cuss and discuss all they want, but a few thousand women on wow will not control the election results. But when the election is over, there will be those who hate this poster and that poster for what was said on the election threads. Already that has happened. The war between the posters goes on and on. Hate exists now. Sure there are persons I dislike and some I dislike more than others, but I don’t make it a habit calling them names. I might call them out on something they say and be really tough, but I don’t call them names. (well under my breath I might) But I must warn you some of the posts on here have gotten to me and caused me to write things I normally wouldn’t. As you have said first and most importantly, you are an American. And so am I. You are black and I am white, but that certainly doesn’t mean that I dislike you because you are not the same color as me. I was raised in hicksville usa, in a totally bigoted village, but that doesn’t mean I went with the crowd and became a bigot. Why should I care about skin color? It’s the person’s being that counts. That’s why I am so open minded about Mr. Obama but I do think there are those who won’t be open minded about skin color. Each person has a responsibility as an American to be open minded about what goes on. Before voting they should listen to the candidates. We must strive for peace. Which candidate will do that? After last night’s ABC interview with S. Palin, I was quite depressed to see Bush’s Doctrine supported by a woman who is supposed to generate change. We have many things that need attention in America in addition to the war. Economic atmosphere, energy crisis, including the need for a greener America, health care, seniors including Social Security, taxes, equality, just to name some. I will vote for the person who I think will promote leadership, goodness, justice and equality. America must have a shining future. Again thank you for your article. I will try to live up to your expectations. In hopes of freedom and justice, have a splendid day. P.S. Some people are asking to apply for the view. I guess just one day with a front row seat, hotel and airfare would be ok with me. ;o)
